U.S. Attorney Josh Minkler of the Southern District of Indiana announced Friday that Boucher, 58, has been charged with assaulting a member of Congress resulting in personal injury, according to a news release.

"Assaulting a member of Congress is an offense we take very seriously," Minkler said in a news release. "Those who choose to commit such an act will be held accountable."

Boucher has signed a plea agreement, although no court date has been set for the taking of his guilty plea and the imposition of any sentence, according to Minkler's office, which was assigned the case after the office of Russell Coleman, U.S. Attorney for the Western District of Kentucky, recused itself.

The federal charge against Boucher carries a maximum penalty of 10 years in prison and a $250,000 fine.

I'm a lifelong republican, and I've gotta say (after I know that the good senator is in good health) that I'm only surprised that it took that long before someone beat (the most annoying guy on TV) rand paul's ass.

Not going to happen

If a long prison term was the outcome there would not be a plea deal in place. This would be plead out over time, not this early.

If a long prison term was the outcome there would not be a plea deal in place. This would be plead out over time, not this early.

I thought that the sentence guidelines that are a part of the plea deal are usually made public with the deal. He may have taken the plea to a lesser charge that has a max of 10 years versus the "up to life" sentences that he could have also been charged with. In fact, he could have easily been charged with attempt to kill and conspiring to kill, both which have up to life sentences. So he easily could have been looking at this current charge plus two more with up to life sentences, and given the evidence that he's guilty, his best hope was plead guilty to the single charge with a max 10.
