I think his point is, is that’s how the b12 snobs see us as regardless of what we do.

One of the little directional schools has the 2nd largest enrollment and a $65 million budget and ballooning. Plus 2 major bowl wins in 5 years. Plus delivered massive ratings and 2nd highest peach bowl ratings ever with Notre Dame and LSU playing at the same time. I know the big 12 isn't expanding, but the dig a the directional schools doesn't have any basis. What direction is central anyway?
Fighting the directional battle is a losing one. I wish that UCF fans would realize this. A simple name change back to Florida Technological University fixes these problems. Everybody sees it but UCF fans.

I've been onboard, but it will never happen now. I just think the little directional school label is a bit funny for UCF. I'm sure we are like 6X the size of Baylor, TCU, Duke, Wake, Miami, etc.

I agree but most college football fans are mentally lazy. They group all "State U's" above "Directional State U's". They think that UCF is a small commuter school that hasn't won anything in football because that is the profile of all of the directional schools (Northwestern and Southern Cal are not directional schools). People are more likely to believe that University of Idaho or South Dakota is a more prestigious football school than UCF. So why continue to fight the public stereotype when it is detrimental to us? I wish more UCF fans thought like you.

I've always been a fan of becoming the University of Orlando. The school pretty much exists to service the city anyways (still have large commuter numbers and multiple satellite campuses in the area now), and has only become more entwined with the area since I was there in 2007. It has been pretty successful too, as both the university and city have really taken off over the last decade.

The name Florida tech would be huge.
I wish usf could change their name too. Right or wrong the directional thing carries a very negative opinion.

I believe Florida Tech was taken after FTU switched to UCF...

Well, at least get the directional part right. Tampa seems more Western Florida.

I mean western fla really would be Pensacola.
Tampa is kinda southwest or West central if you had to make it something.

An older man who had lived his entire life in the Tampa area told me that the reason they are called USF is that b/c prior to the 1960's, anything south of, say, Ocala, was considered to be South Florida.
Since the University was founded in the 50's, it makes sense.
Back in those days there was no Central Florida, Bay Area, The Beaches, Treasure Coast, Space Coast, etc... It was South Florida and North Florida.
It wasn't until the early 60's when Walt Disney bought all of that swamp land and NASA started shooting for the moon did many of these labels stick.

The University of Florida @ Orlando AKA the UFO greys
vs.
The University of Florida @ Tampa AKA the Tampa Taurus (The Bull)
Seems fair ?
We could call our stadium the mother ship. Get it ? UFO's abduct cows.
Mascot could be Cosmos from Transformers.

It would be stupid for USF and UCF to change their names now. They have built up way to much equity in the names. UCF, for example, won the Peach bowl as UCF, not Orlando University, gaining brand equity in the process. OU or UO would be totally unrecognizable to the country.

How's the UCF and USF brand working? The casual college football fan views them the same as Central Michigan and Southern Mississippi. It would take less than 5 years for the new name to stick.

You're probably right. ESPN still cant get past us dropping Golden from our name, amd theres plenty of other logistical issues involved, athletic and academic.
My prior comments were more of a remark made in hindsight than anything else.
