RE: Democrat Doug Jones Wins Alabama Senate Seat In The Special Election
Republicans are going to face demographic challenges if they don’t start making inroads with millennials and candidates like Roy Moore are killing the brand. In 2020, Millenials will replace boomers as the largest voting block in this country, and they overwhelmingly vote democratic. While Alabama is sure to remain red, many of the millennials who participated and voted in this election will find their home in the Democratic Party.

There's no guarantee that Jones is a lame duck. The only way that would be is if there was one candidate, who was already announced, that was running unopposed in the GOP primary who was generally perceived to be acceptable to most Alabamians.

The most likely result at this point is that there will be a never ending parade of crazy in the GOP primary in 2020, all trying to beat each other up and prove how nuts they are.

Awww, another snowflake. You said "let the voters decide," and they did. Common sense "trumped" the crazies in Alabama last night.

BTW, it's "pyrrhic."

Believe the rest of that fairy tale all you want

Half the voters Alabama who voted for Trump in 2016, either sat home, voted for a write in, or voted for a Democrat. You don't get it all back at once. I'll take that out of Alabama in 2017. I'll certainly take it in Texas against Ted Cruz in 2018.

Yeah. Enjoy your phyrric victory. There won't be another dem elected for 50 years after this.

LOL. I'm looking forward to seeing Walter Maddox be elected Alabama Governor over Republican Governor nominee Roy Moore next year....LOL.

I really don't think the GOP is stupid enough to nominate him for Governor in 2018.

I think its more likely that Jones manages to cobble together another inside straight electoral victory running in 2020 against a GOPer on the same ticket with Donald Trump.

---

And a victory is only 'pyrrhic' if it involves losing something bigger in return for that win. There was nothing pyrrhic about this win for the Dems. It came to us without any cost whatsoever.
Wrong. Dems wont win again in Alabama for 50 years. You beat an accused child molester by one point for a temporary seat. Make no mistake, this was not a vote for Jones. It was a vote against Moore based on allegations. You know it and every one knows it.

And you still don't control the Senate. Lol

I'm not so sure this wasn't also a vote against Trump.

Dems got the same turnout that they did in Presidential years. GOP voters fell by HALF in many places. And a lot of that was driven by African American and young voters, many of whom are just as mad about Trumpism as they are about Roy Moore.

Speaking of lame duck....it might be Mitch McConnell and Paul Ryan.

When Jones gets to D.C. and exposes himself as the far lefty he is you'll probably be able to run a stop sign on the Republican ticket and win for the next 20 years.

I don't know. I'm waiting to see if Jones pulls a Shelby to try to keep the seat. Shelby has proven time and again, particularly in this election, that he is a pseudo-conservative. I strongly suspect Jones will try the same ploy.

The problem here for the uninitiated in Alabama politics was that Luther Strange was held in strong suspicion by the electorate because of his shenanigans involving Bentley.

Because of that he was a weak candidate put up by the Republicans for this seat. Roy Moore had outside money poured into his campaign and knocked Luther out of the ticket. Then the outside money switched to Jones because Moore is controversial even in Alabama.

I felt that the Republican's failed to put forth an acceptable untainted name and the national PACs took advantage of the situation. So now we have a solid Clinton guy in the Senate because we had one shady dude (Luther), and one controversial and socially unacceptable guy (Moore) on the ticket in the primaries and then general election.

For those of us who live here you could see this setup coming a mile away. It's just sad.

Shelby (who backed Jones) got the Bammer votes and now has tenure. Jones will try to do the party switch to keep his seat, IMO. They are both representative of the left leanings of some of the old Dixie-crats. It will be a long three years.

***************

And Tom, this didn't have one damn thing to do with Trump. Strange and Moore were both extremely flawed candidates. Jones's coalition was simply disgusted Republicans and write ins to express disapproval and stay homes were the deciding factor. All it indicated about Trump was that his advisers are idiots. A smart politician would have never uttered a peep about this race once the candidates were set. Even if Moore had won the Republicans were going to be in for a pounding because of his deficits. If there was ever a lose / lose scenario for Republicans in the State this was it. And the lesson that should be learned is that Alabama's Republican Party needs a leadership overhaul.

The GOP is experiencing the last gasps of the traditional "values voter." They're going to have to change their game entirely if they want to remain relevant in the years to come as millennials start outnumbering everyone else.

The big problem is that republicans don’t have a coherent set of principles to run on. So they open themselves up to getting tarred and feathered by everything that comes along. How hard is it to provide a better alternative when the other side is bent on pursuing divisive identity politics and a collectivist economic policy that gave us Venezuela and the Soviet Union? Can republicans really do no better? Or are they going to continue to stand for nothing, so they fall for anything, including Roy Moore?

I’ve laid out several times an agenda that I would support. First party to go there gets my vote. Newt’s Contract was the best thing republicans ever did. And it led to their biggest electoral victory ever. So why don’t they do that now?

Let them dems think beating an accused child molester by 1 point is a huge victory.

When does the woman press charges or was it all just a farce.

I’ve laid out several times an agenda that I would support. First party to go there gets my vote. Newt’s Contract was the best thing republicans ever did. And it led to their biggest electoral victory ever. So why don’t they do that now?

Because when Reagan and Newt were around there was a definable plan for government offered as a platform. When was the last time any party had a platform? They don't because they no longer want to be held accountable to a proposal tendered to gain a party unity because all either party is now is a means for corporate America to continue business as usual. Social issues are the issue du jour for the ignorant unwashed masses to pursue. Taxes and tariffs and arbitration are the concerns of business, and sometimes treaties.

The Republicans lost their children to liberal higher education as they ignored who it was instructing their children and what it was that they were teaching them. And rightfully now millennials see corporate America for what it is and those most closely associated with it will not be trusted. Millennials tend toward socialistic concepts because they no longer see the pathway to independent success. Gone are the days of family business lost to perks that mega chains purchased through gifts to Congress. Education is expensive and for what? Unless you are a top researcher or a medical doctor the upper middle class is out of reach. These kids matriculate to a life in a cubicle working for less than $30,000 and in an environment where there are no holidays and being salaried means they will exceed 40 hours in a work week relegating their pay to about $15 bucks an hour if they are lucky. And then if they are extremely competent and savvy enough not to threaten the putz who is their boss they might one day make $50,000. And after 15 or so years their company will terminate them if they haven't moved on because they can be replaced more cheaply by fresher labor who are much less likely to utilize the health insurance of the corporation.

So getting our children to identify with responsibility and accountability and the concept of rugged individualism seems out of touch and unobtainable to them. Add into the mix the way we've provided them with everything, and the fact that most of them haven't really worked for anyone else while growing up, and it isn't hard to see why they fall for the state promises of assistance as their best course of action.

Shame on us for leading them, and then leaving them, in the craptastic polluted corporate world where their rights are lost in arbitration, and the crooks are too damn big to fail.

Identitity politics is not the strategy of one party. Quite frankly, "identity" and branding are at the core of every political party.

And it could just as easily be said that the class divide propagated by Republican tax policy and corporate cronyism is hell bent on giving us a repeat of 1929... which is a hell of a lot closer to becoming reality in this country than some sort of McCarthy-contrived collectivist, communist-style collapse.

Hillary tried to run on "values" and "identity" and "environmental virtue signaling" and lost.

As Carville said, "its the economy stupid." That is what Trump ran on. The Democrats were just too arrogant and stupid to realize it. Many of them still haven't realized it.

Probably so. But the Republicans need to get down right nasty with these liberal fk-tards. Trump does it. They fought Obama tooth and nail on the open SCOTUS seat and won. Now they need to fight fire with fire going into 2018.

Obviously a Hillary voter who doesn't understand "identity" politics is solely a Democratic thing. And if there was class divisiveness, it sure wasn't Trump doing it.
