Many years back I had a female peer complain to me that I was too "handsy." I had touched her and other women on the arm or shoulder. Now what she did was come directly to me in private and say that. I apologized for offending her and tried to be more cognizant. Some time later in a meeting she put a hand on my thigh (something I had never ever done). I just ignored it and DIDN'T touch back. You have to be careful.

The handsy thing is also generational IMHO. I can remember the older guys when I first got into the work place 25 years ago. They would also pat you on the back, put their arm around you, massage shoulders, give hugs, or even how they would crowd what people today refer to as "your personal space".... and this wasn't just to members of the opposite sex, this was just how it was done.

Even 5-7 years ago, the VP of my department was the type of lady who would always give hugs to everyone. There was nothing sexual about it, she was just one of those grandmotherly, nurturing types. Sadly, this sort of behavior will not be tolerated anymore-- especially if it is a male on female situation.

Yes, I remember older people being very slap you on the back types.

And cultures are different. Americans are very closed now compared to Europeans or Latins. My wife is always joking that she doesn't remember whether a particular country does 1, 2 or 3 air kisses on the cheek as a greeting. That's male-female or female-female and sometimes even male-male. Of course, with Orthodox Jews, the different sexes don't even shake hands.
