Maybe we should just stroll around on campus and hand out business cards telling them to come here for free things. By things I mean messages.

Got to admit, I've never heard of any of these. Then again I come from a time where we did punch cards and had to wait 4 days to see if our program even worked.

Think of them as the new AOL or Yahoo messenger but with cooler tools builtin. I don't use them, but my brother and sister-in law are both now entering college, so I've been exposed thanks to them.

Winning brings fans! When we start winning meaningful games again we'll see crowds like we used to.

That being said, I don't miss games, won't miss games, and will continue to cheer my ass off for the monarchs! I want to be part of the solution!

This is valid in my opinion. We tend to slant in the older direction. I'd say we have a "classic" announcer. I like Jack, but at times we sound a tad bit dated and not current.

I was just in a marketing study this morning for an ODU rebrand / refresh / improvement. I told the marketing team that ODU is the "Volvo University". Lots of old folks associated with the school and community and that a specific type of person drives that kind of car. That person is not the kind of student that fills sports stadiums. The school should maybe try to become the "Yeezy" school or something.

Interesting, are they trying to re-brand logos? I think they need a big time over haul on their logos and branding altogether

I don't know about logos. They did ask: "Of the two logos, the crown or the lion. Which one do you see yourself as?"

I threw out that "idea fusion" means nothing. EVERY student agreed. When prompted with what would you replace it with. One was response was... "ODU, Free Ice cream and Cake" It does sound better than Idea Fusion. :)

Most of the other questions were:

"Why did you choose ODU?"
"Grad Students, are you in a bubble or do you interact with the university?"
"Campus feel?"
"What do you like / dislike?"

Other sorts of typical stuff.. but a bunch of more pointed questions when somebody said something interesting. They were quick to jump on it and dig deeper. I think they are doing this all day via invite only. I overhead the group before me and every question I was around for was different than my group.

I did a shout out for this board (and other sports / university related message boards) :)

Every time I see Idea Fusion it makes me cringe, whoever had the idea to put that on the logo should be fired. They need to have 1 logo for the university and 1 for athletics. There are like 5 for each and it looks pathetic and crappy. Simplify the whole thing with 2 or 3 good logos. And get someone better than a 3rd grader to come up with the logos

Was this re-branding study thing done by the new marketing firm they hired from RVA some time ago?

RE: How do we get current students involved with this Message Board?
I've said it a bunch of times on here before, pride can't be forced, it has to come from the student. When I was a freshman (2009-2010), our basketball program was buzzing and it was the first year of ODU football. While football wasn't at the level it is now, we all know how excited the fanbase was that year. But for basketball, a friend and I took it upon ourselves to come to every men's and women's game (even the exhibition games) sit in the front row, paint ourselves up, create chants, study up on the opponents players, and cause an overall ruckus. A couple of friends followed and with the help of the Monarch Maniacs captains, the student section grew and grew. Eventually, the student section was always full, everyone standing and cheering, and it lasted until that same friend and I became cheerleaders and no one in the Maniacs or student section picked up what we put down. Going 5-25 that year also didn't help lol, but you get the point. I thought we had that back again when there was a group of students in the front row every game when Trey Freeman was playing, but it never picked up. It take one student to devote time and effort into it, and with the help from his or her friends, it could create something.

Along with that came the following of the old CAAZone forum as well as other online forums to look into what other Universities's fans were talking about, and gauge the hardcore fanbase's interests. I feel like most students don't typically want or care to visit these sites, which circles back to what I said about pride not being forced. There hasn't been student leadership in the student sections in a long time, and something has to change to bring it back, and have it stay like most other schools.

Someone like JChandler must bring back the monarch maniacs, I have no idea why that was ever canceled. They were the most loyal and cheering students and really got the other students going. That needs to be brought back ASAP!

RE: How do we get current students involved with this Message Board?
It would be worth it to actually pay some BMoCs to be maniacs. Get the frats involved, make the band loud, fun and cool. Coordinate fun things between the students (maniacs), cheerleaders and the band. Don't shut them down when they get loud and have fun and things get a little crass. Thats kids these days. VCU lets their students be the biggest d-bags, a-holes and vulgar scumbags in the state... they also have a pretty full student section. We move the band away from the visitors so as not to upset them, tell the students to watch their mouth every chance we get (I'm no fan of profanity, but it is part of why they don't come), get rid of the maniacs and play teams students don't give a darn about. And our band wears collared shirts... c'mon. If its not fun, students won't come.

RE: How do we get current students involved with this Message Board?
I was a commuter during my ODU years. Driving through the HRBT every school day was a pain. I also worked part-time. However, I went to just about every home basketball game possible. Sometimes I would have to waste a couple hours after my last class until gametime. So I have nothing good to say about the students who don't show up to games. Especially the ones who live on campus. There is no excuse for our student section to ever be light. We have great facilities and great programs. Also, our fan support as a whole is great too. It's just the student body that seems to be lacking IMO. I'm not sure how to strengthen the student fan base because for me, my passion came naturally since I'm a sports fan.
Ideas: -Bring back the Maniacs, -tell students to get social about the games, -and hype the living hell out of our sports. Deck the halls with stuff

When I was there I went to every sporting event I could. Even field hockey (sorry, but it wasn't my thing despite the girls being hot). Hoops, baseball, wresting, soccer. The first college basketball game I ever went to was ODU vs. UVA in 1993 at the scope. Been a fan ever since.

I don't think I attended one sporting event as a student. Told them to take a hike when they came asking for money. Attended a few baseball/basketball games over the years until football came, which I decided to get tix for that and season for basketball.

That was my first game as an ODU student. Been hooked ever since. Petey Sessoms was a beast.

Some people simply don't like sports, or only enjoy watching sports from time to time.

Myself, I enjoy football. I go to games when I can make it. I don't plan my schedule to attend however. A majority of the other sports I have no interest in or dislike so.. I will not attend. I guess you hate me. I'm okay with that.
