RE: 2017 FB Roster Notes
i didn't want to start a whole new thread for this, so forgive me. does anyone know what happened to Alex Wood after his last season coaching at JMU? I know he coached with the Vikings, but was he fired from JMU or did he just leave for the Vikings gig? looks like the wins were decreasing each year so it's not super obvious. just curious.

He wasn't fired after the 98 season, but no one was too upset he left. I think he left either just before or just after spring ball in the spring of 99.

RE: 2017 FB Roster Notes
You are right but let's remember that he had one year left on his contract and JMU wasn't giving him an extension, which is likely why he left the Vikings.

RE: 2017 FB Roster Notes
Now that the game notes are out...some quick thoughts:
- #24 D'Angelo Amos (SS) is a R-Fr that will be back for KR and is the #2 PR. To get to that point without having played a down...should be fun to watch.
- Marshall is back as our #1 KR man and is the co-#1 RB. Guess he impressed in camp. Any of our top 3 would probably start on any CAA team. Even Woods, our #4, would challenge to start.
- Both of the punters are brand new...the Aussie is listed as the #2 (well, secondary #1)
- Kyndel Dean looks to have impressed as a true Fr, pulling ahead of Eldridge (though, again, co-backups as of now)
- Clayton Cheatham is confirmed as the #2 TE behind Carlton (at least until Kloo is back)
- Our defense is maybe the deepest its ever been. They look to be scary good this year. Jordan Brown and Raven Greene will lay down the hurt in the secondary. Our LBs will be fighting for time. CBs are solid. The DL will tear up some people. If their mentality continues where it left off last season, the talent there...yikes. Our avg PA will probably be like...10.

Game notes w/ depth chart: http://jmusports.com/schedule.aspx?path=football

Couple of observations. Our entire 2nd string O-line are all FRr or Fr. The tackles are 275 and 279. Kind of reminds me of the undersized "Matts" we had to throw into the first ODU game when half our line got hurt.

Also, it shows Hawkins as starter at two LB positions. It wasn't more than a few days ago that Madia had reported that Maginley would be a starter. Could be a misprint or maybe Maginley is hurt?

Also, the depth chart lists Robert Carter Jr as backup at OLB. His weight, 186 lbs, is an odd sized LB at our level. He's a player though, so I gotta trust the coaches.

I agree with your assessment of Robert Carter Jr. 186 just isn't going to cut it at the FCS level for a LB. He clearly has a nose for the ball, and I think his skill set might best suited at strong safety. We can certainly use some depth there.

Yeah, that doesn't make any sense. Shows Little as the starter at 1 ILB, Hawkins as the starter at the other ILB position, with Holloway as the #2, and Hawkins as the starter at OLB. I thought Holloway was with the #1s during camp. Maybe the starting 3 we'll see on Sat will be Little, Holloway, and Hawkins?

Good Info. There are other gaps with the game notes so be careful how much we read into them. Take a look at the pronunciation guide, doesn't mean as much as the other pieces however if we are focused on details why is Domo Taylor still there? I just believe everything should be covered down to the last detail. Details make the difference in everything. Lets not be sloppy.

RE: 2017 FB Roster Notes
Below are the the 11 2016 starters for most of the season on offense. I bolded who is in the starting lineup for ECU. Pretty eye opening that 7 of the 8 who won't be on the field for ECU were All CAA and/or in the NFL.

-QB Bryan Schor- rSr, 2016 CAA Offensive POTY, All American, pre season CAA Offensive POTY, pre season All American.
-RB Khalid Abdullah- Graduated, 1st team All CAA, All American, now a UDFA with NY Giants.
-WR Brandon Ravenel- Graduated, 1st team All CAA.
-WR Terrence Alls- rSr, suspended 1st 3.5 games. 2016 3rd Team All CAA.
-WR Rashard Davis- Graduated, now a UDFA with Philadelphia Eagles.
-TE Jonathan Kloosterman- Sr, suspended 1st 2 games. 2016 1st team All CAA, 2017 pre season All American.
-LT Aaron Stinnie- rSr- 3rd year starter, 2016 1st team All CAA, 2017 pre season All American.
-LG AJ Bolden- rSr (2014 Toldeo transfer)

-C Kyle Rigney- Graduated.
-RG Matt Frank- Graduated, 2nd team All CAA.
-RT Mitchell Kirsch- Graduated. 1st team All CAA, consensus All American, now a UDFA with Chicago Bears

Below are the 11 2016 starters for most of the season on defense. Bolded those who are starting (or in 2 deep) for ECU:

-DL Darrious Carter- rJr (UVA transfer).
-DL Simeyon Robinson- rJr, 3rd year starter.
-DL Cornell Urquhart- Sr.
-KAT Andrew Ankrah- Sr, 3rd year starter, 2 time All CAA, 2017 pre season All CAA, All American.

I'd argue since he got some starts last year during the playoffs Mac Patrick could be considered a "starter", but I appreciate your post.

Patrick got some PT during the playoffs, but didn't start a game last year.

RE: 2017 FB Roster Notes
I agree about Kloosterman hurting more from a blocking perspective than receiving. It's easier to get by with inexperience at guard when you have a good center and strong tackles anchoring the line. But without Chavious, Klooseterman could have helped out Jahee quite a bit. Let's just hope (and trust) the coaches have been able to prepare the next guys up like they did with Chavious and Mac during the playoffs.

As also stated, the future looks very promising when you have FR/rFR talent like we do already outplaying upper classmen. We'll have much better depth and experience when the playoffs, we just have to persevere through these early games.

How much experience do the backups from last year at C, RG, & RT have? Did they get to play much?

The now rSo RT that replaced the injured consensus All American (now with the Bears) when he went down in the last game of the regular season. #68 Tyree Chavious (6'3"/314), basically started the entire playoffs, was going to be the starter at RT, but tore his achilles this summer, so is out for the season.

So the new starting RT will another rSo, listed 6'3"/292. Played in 5 games last season.

The new starting RG will be a another rSo, 6'2"/315. Played in 7 games last season.
http://www.jmusports.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=13371

The new starting OC will be a soph, 6'2"/295. Played in 8 games last season, including about 2 1/2 qtrs @ NDSU in the semis as a true Fr when the rSr starter went down. Did a great job considering the circumstances.

-LB Gage Steele- Graduated. 2 time All CAA, had tryout with New Orleans Saints.
-LB Kyre Hawkins- rSr.
-CB Rashad Robinson- Jr.

-CB Taylor Reynolds- Graduated. 3 time All CAA, All American. Was a UDFA with the Atlanta Falcons (cut).
-SS Jordan Brown- rSr.
-FS Raven Greene- rSr- 4th year starter, 2016 1st team All CAA, 2017 pre season All CAA, All American.

I'd argue since he got some starts last year during the playoffs Mac Patrick could be considered a "starter", but I appreciate your post.
Patrick got some PT during the playoffs, but didn't start a game last year.
Mac didn't start the championship game?

I thought he did too which is why I said that, but I trust BDK more than myself.
