I spent a little time comparing the newly posted roster against the 2016 final roster.

All of the freshman from 2016 (36 listed!) redshirted except the following:

12 Cole Johnson QB
30 Adam Smith S
43 Bryce Maginley S
65 Dorrius Rodgers DL
73 Mac Patrick OL
82 Nick Carlton TE
97 John Daka DL

The following players (non-freshman) also redshirted:

38 Mike Cobbs R-So. S
42 Pat Frio R-Jr. K/P

In addition to the 25 announced recruits, the updated roster shows a transfer from Campbell:

Joe Fishpaw R-Fr. OL 6-4 270

The following players (seniors excluded) are no longer on the roster:

2 Connor Mitch R-Jr. QB (well documented)
12 Logan Boyd R-Jr. WR (tall receiver, but has seen limited action so far)
21 Robert Branch Jr. S (former Rivals, ESPN, & 247 3 star, played in 5 games, limited snaps)
31 Kirk Robinette R-Fr. DL (former Rivals 2 star, played in 11 games but limited snaps)
35 Marcell Johnson Sr. S (saw significant action as a two deep player)
52 Nick Michalski R-Jr. LB (played in one game)
53 Jordan Brooks R-Fr. DL (former ESPN 3 star & Rivals 2 star, no action)

Finally, Gary Wortham (DL) is shown on the roster with a year of Gr. Last year he was a R-Sr. and saw no action. I don't know if this means he has been granted or is petitioning to receive another year of eligibility. He is a Richmond transfer and apparently saw playing time there a few years ago.
With Mitch gone I guess Cole Johnson is unlikely to get a redshirt season.
It'd be ballsy, but I'd like to see Cole redshirted unless Schor went down with an injury that would necessitate a non-Schor start.

I don't see any reason why we won't redshirt him and can always pull it if needed. Hopefully we have another QB that could come in for mop up duty and give Schor a breather. Correct me if wrong but I believe we used another QB in the Villanova game (for a drive or so) before the coaches learned the severity of Schor's injury and decided to throw in Cole

So no Womack... I was skeptical of his whole recruitment and disappointed, but not surprised. That guy really brought the wood on every hit.

No, Cole came in Immediately when Bryan went out.

Where'd he end up going?

We have Hunter Etheridge and Mack Waldman (both redshirt juniors) that I believe will go in for mop up duty to try to preserve a redshirt for Cole. However, it could be that Houston wants to get Cole more game experience to be ready to take over the position in 2018.

I'm not really sure. He may be going the JUCO route or even Fork Union. I would love to hear the story of why a three star safety choose to be a preferred walk on at a FCS program.

Why "preserve" a redshirt for Cole? I think the recruitment of Gage Moloney makes it clear he is the Dukes QB of the future and should be a redshirt this upcoming season.

Schor graduates. Johnson is a JR and Moloney is only a R-FR. Keep pushing the pipeline along.
I agree with Balmer. Cole is not likely to be redshirted this year. This past season and the one before it at JMU proves you need two QBs. Heck, Youngstown started their 4th string QB in the title game.

I hope they play Cole at least half of the game against ETSU and NSU to give him some real game reps.
I think the backup QB will get a LOT of playing time next season (read: Dukes with huge halftime leads and 1st stringers sitting to avoid injury).

This is a very good situation. Kind of like Oklahoma and Nebraska wiping out the extremely weak Big 8 back in the day.
Cole vs Gage will be an epic quarterback competion for the fall of 2018
There is an entirely different feel to this program now then after the 2004 season. Then we felt we could get back to the playoffs in 2005 but did not expect another NC. We all knew 2004 was lightning in a bottle. For 2017, we expect a deep run in the playoffs and feel pretty dang good about our chances of a repeat. There is this feeling that we could go on a App or NDSU type of run.

Exciting times for JMU football and it's fan base.
The 2005 team went 7-4 and missed the playoffs. There was no fbs game either. Four Fcs losses.
I'm not sure if they were considered a legitimate bubble team that year.
If we make the playoffs, or the 2nd round at minimum, you could say we had a better follow up season than following 2004. That 2005 team underachieved.
One other note. The coach listing for 2017 is the same as 2016. I thought I read somewhere that the contracts for assistant coaches (minus Trott) were all yearly and due for renewal late Jan / early Feb.

I actually think the coaches would prefer to RS Cole if it works out. If Schor stays healthy and the only time QB2 plays is in mop-up duty, then I think they'll put Etheridge out there.
They did under achieve. 2005 had almost the entire team back. More so than the 2017 team roster. We all expected them to compete for the CAA title but realized they won a lot of close games in 2004.

2016 was a year of dominating wins like we fans have never seen before. 2017 will likely see more of them if we stay healthy. I have never seen a future so bright since the Lou basketball days at JMU.
That 2005 team definitely underachieved by record, but they were much more dominant in their wins than the 2004 team. Just needed to pull off one of the close ones and couldn't do it.
barring a spring transfer, injury, or change to the depth chart, Cole Johnson is not redshirting. they're not going to put a #3 QB in there for mop up duty and bring in the #2 at a crucial time in the season if Schor gets hurt. trust me on this. if Johnson is considered the #2 QB this season as he is now, he will not redshirt.

#52 was injured (completely ruptured pectoral)and had surgery after the 5th game of the season and with a 12-15 month recovery and rehab, he will forgo his 5th year and graduate in May.
