Lane in his 1st at UT year had a two game improvement including Mount Cody block away from beating then number one Bama. At USC he goes 8-5 then 10-2 and started to struggle when they the scholarships loss hit the full 30 players. He goes to Bama and finishes top 4 team in the country 3 years he is there. Makes really avg QB's like Blake Sims and Jacob Coaker look like world beaters. Yet Bill Clark who has one 6-6 season with 1 win over team with winning record yet they will TRUE BELIVE there way to 9th best team in the conference. FAU returns 88 percent of the roster off a team that started 3 seniors last year and only 2 upper classmen on the entire defense wont be good because you think you have Lane pinned down.

*shrug* I just replied to get another Blazer voice on the thread. To clarify, I did say "unprecedented" things. FAU will be improved this year. I don't think they'll win 10 games or that they ever will under Kiffen. Technically, UAB just kicking off week 1 is unprecedented, but winning 4 games would surprise the hell out of pretty much everyone. I think it will be in that neighborhood.

Once you've been around long enough you get used to the ebb and flow. More recently it's been USM, Rice, and Marshall in CUSA. At or near the top several years and then starting again from the bottom. Some teams never seem to break through, but the ones that do should enjoy it while it lasts because it will always crash when you don't expect it to or at least don't expect it as sharply as it comes.

I don't think the elite team exists anymore in the G5. The competition and talent gap is too narrow whereby any team has a pretty fair shot at winning against any other. See UCONN over Houston a few years ago. It's just not sustainable as even a lower team will peak with a senior crew and make waves for a season, then drop as they rebuild.

FWIW in 2015 5 C-USA teams went to bowl games. They only lost to each other. So the elite/not elite thing happened.

This is absolutely true. Every year there will be one or two G5 programs that have excellent years, but they soon fade back into normalcy with everyone else. In fact, too much success at the G5 level almost always leads to losing your head coach to an NFL team or a P5 school. It's hard to sustain success at the G5 level.

I for one hope Marshall bounces back strong. That would put the league with 7 solid teams. I also look fro FAU and UNT to continue to improve and be solid opponents. FIU always has potential with recruiting ground they have. Maybe Davis and put it together!
