do that and I'm done with UC sports.

I doubt I'd be the only one to walk away...

Stand for something or stand for nothing.

Hot Take: I'd get over it if it meant more money coming in to pay coaches and assistants / increase recruiting.

No way I could ever renig on a commitment to a donor. Louise Nippert donated in good faith and UC made a commitment to her when they took her money. Rename Nippert and no future donor would ever have confidence that UC would take their donation and then not fulfill a request made with the donation.

On top of that Jimmy Nippert is an integral part of Bearcat history. He literally gave his life on the football field playing for UC. His parents donated the money to build Nippert in his name.

Stand for something or stand for nothing.

Great observation about future donors. Perhaps it is even in writing but verbal should be enough.

I can't believe this needs to be explained...

On the surface, yes. It's about naming a stadium.

But at it's core, the issue is about UC standing by their word...

UC chose to take money from a longtime donor family (Nipperts) with the stipulation about maintaining the current stadium name (after Jimmy Nippert).

…Will UC stand by their word or are they willing to sell out a longtime donor's wishes for the next pot of silver to come along?

Is UC's word their bond?

If you say getting more money matters more than UC keeping their word...
that is a sad commentary on today's morals and values.

Don't they usually get around this by calling it Nippert Field at 5/3 Stadium...

They could do something like that as long as they maintain Nippert Stadium. The field is already named for Carson (in honor of Arch Carson).

Currently correct naming would be Carson Field, at Nippert Stadium, in Lindner Varsity Village of the University of Cincinnati.

I believe Nippert and Lindner inclusions were due to large donations so likely not negotiable as is the University name...

There are other creative options left on the table, like naming individual stadium gates.

Yep. Name the gates, name the concourse bridge, name the notches...
don't rename the stadium.

Does the new press box/premium seating monstrosity have any name/sponsor yet? I figure that would be the first thing to get covered.

I wonder how much Dr. Reed Shank donated for the Pavilion naming?

That would be a go by if you want to pony up for the Club/Suite Pavilion.

I'm sure Dr. Arch Carson was a nice guy who did great things for the university, just like I'm sure Jimmy Nippert was a good kid. Not to sound callous, but neither one of those two are helping keep the lights on now that UC is stuck in a conference with a low-dollar media deal.

The two most monetizable assets of the football stadium are tied up by two dudes who have been dead for nearly 100 years. At some point, financial reality has to win out for UC athletics.

Sure Jimmy Nippert did nothing but die for UC Football. Then his family paid to build the original Nippert. Then Louise Nippert rebuilt Nippert from condemnation. Man you are clueless!

I'm with #41 here. Kroger is paying UK $25 million for the naming rights of their football stadium. if we find someone willing to pay us that kind of money we need to do it. We can write a check to the Nippert estate for a few coins to keep them happy-- they'd rather give the money to the arts anyway

I can't imagine the Nipperts and Carsons would be happy to watch UC fall farther behind in the arms race because they insisted on their names alone as the namesake.

We are only allowed to piss off certain major donors families. 05-stirthepot

In all seriousness, I don't see why the name Nippert would have to disappear at all. Why couldn't we make it (using this company as an example) P&G Nippert Stadium. Company name first, apostrophe "S" optional, followed by Nippert Stadium. Boom, best of both worlds.

Like I said -- I'm not trying to be callous, but he wasn't a war hero, a great statesman, or a legend of the program. He was a dude with rich family who died young. And, what you see as "respect," I see as the program turning down millions of dollars (dollars the program desperately needs) to honor a guy who has been dead for a century and had more than his share of time on the side of the building.

I get that's I'm in the minority here, but some point, practicality has to win out. Stadiums are supposed to be revenue generators for sports programs, not giant tombstones in the center of campus.
