Great news. She'll need a couple seasons to turn it around, but I think this was about as good a hire as Wood could have made. Guess he didnt want to hear it again after the men's hire. :)

RE: New Women's B-ball Coach
Nikki McCray's ears are probably still ringing from all the booing I fired her way when she was at Tennessee. But if she is indeed on board at ODU, I'm suddenly a big fan of hers. She is exactly the kind of coach this program needs. She has a wonderful resume -- outstanding collegiate background, pro experience, good recruiter and experience under a winning major college coach and program. I only wish this hire had been made before all the transfers and decommittments. To Coach Barefoot's credit, she had a super recruiting year. Too bad those recruits have mostly scattered. Maybe there are some uncommitted players out there. But I think Coach Nikki will do well with the players still on the roster. They can't do any worse than the past couple of years.

Hope she is a big success. Hope she gets a great welcome to Norfolk from the ODU fans. Hope she is able to return some of the PRIDE to ODUWBB.

Wow I think Wood hit this out of the park with this hire. She has the pedigree of a winner and is from the era when ODU and Tennessee were playing each other every year. Very excited about having Nikki McCray Penson as the new women's Basketball Coach.
Welcome and Good Luck bringing back the days of Glory.

She's always been a winner, so I assume she believes she can win at a place like ODU, very happy about this hire.

The new HC didn't recruit alot in Va, need to look at states like Bama, SC, Fla, Ga. If she brings in someone it will be someone she has a relationship with.

RE: New Women's B-ball Coach
Right now we have 8 players on the roster. 3 are seniors. Unless we go the transfer/JUCO route, we will be really young a couple of years.
PG - Jr, Jr, So
G - Sr, RSr
F - RSr, RJr, So
If you watched the women play, you know PG isn't our most productive position (unless you count turnovers). I suspect Timmons (5'7 Jr) is the best out of the group right now. At Guard, Ashley Jackson (5'9 Sr) really improved this year, hopefully she can make another jump. Kelly Loftus (5'10 RSr) the Hofstra transfer becomes eligible too. She averaged over 10 ppg her last season in the CAA. Odegua Oigbokie (6'1 RSr) is our best option in the post right now.
Hopefully we can retain the rest of our recruits (6'5, 6'4, 6'4), and get some immediate help (grad transfer, JUCO).

If you look at the article in the Pilot today, it sounds as if only two of the four players that asked for a release from their scholarship have committed (one to UNC and one to UNCW). I wonder if the other two might stay now, if the new head coach wants them to?

One thing I meant to add, I really hope Jim Corrigan stays with ODU in some capacity. He is a very nice guy and has done good work for ODU for a lot of years.

Do you think she will bring any players with her, it seems as if players follow coaches they like?

I would not think so. It seems to me that players follow head coaches that leave, not assistants. Plus, they would be leaving a national championship team.

My thoughts as well. But you never know players form bonds with assistants as well. If a player is looking for playing time they might. There may be players on SC's bench that could start here.
