KODI & Cutting The Cord
During my banning, I observed the few mentions of Kodi and cord cutting on this board and also participated in different discussions in other places.

When I cut the cord, I would have friends over and they would ask what I was using to watch tv. When I explained it to them they all wanted the same box that I had. In the last 6 months, the whole thing has snowballed. I have sold around 80 of the units to friends and friends of friends from Amazon using Amazon Prime, which happens to be one of my 5 favourite things on the entire planet. I don't make any money from sales, just happy to point friends in the right direction and turn the tables on cable companies that have been screwing everyone over since the beginning of time.

I experimented with a bunch of different boxes from different manufacturers, with my choice based on the following.

- Specifications
- Customer reviews
- Price, bang for the buck
- Performance

The best box out of all the ones I tested, meeting the criteria above is the one listed below.

H96 Pro Plus Android Box
Android 6
Amlogic S912
32GB storage
3GB RAM

https://www.amazon.ca/dp/B06XW9CMYL/ref=...lus+3g+32g

The unit costs anywhere between $90 - 105 USD and does an amazing job, especially with live sports streams, which take up the most resources, have the most traffic and are the most difficult to get to work in high quality. The NVidia Shield is recognized as the best unit, but you are mostly paying for the ability to use it for gaming. At double the price I don't feel that it is worth it if you are only using it to stream Kodi.

There are a lot of deals out there right now, but Kodi has gone to version 17.1 called Krypton. Many of the boxes that are on Android 4 will not be able to upgrade to the new platform and will be obsolete. Also, many of the cheap boxes only have 1 GB of RAM and will buffer or freeze especially during live streamed events.

At a minimum, if you are buying a box it should have the following specs.

Android 5 (but no reason not to have Android 6)
Amlogic S905
8GB of storage
2GB of RAM

For anyone who doesn't want to shell out the dough, you can easily install Kodi on your computer and connect it to your tv through a $10 cable. You can also install it on your phone, but the feeds use up a huge amount of data in a short time.

If you are one or two adults in your household, you can easily cut the cord completely by having one of these units and an antenna to get local programming. If you have children, this isn't a solution to cut the cord, but you can easily keep your core of cable channels and completely get rid of Netflix, HBO and any programming you pay for to get movies and tv shows.

If anyone has any questions about a box they want to purchase or any questions about programming, and where to find certain stuff, please feel free to ask anything.

If anyone wants me to post the tutorial that I include when I send someone a unit, I will be happy to do that.

I've saved well over a thousand dollars the last year with Kodi. No bills, no Redbox movies and rarely go to the theater. I think its gotten too popular now though

I find myself watching less, but better tv. There are amazing repositories like Smithsonian Channel, Hubble Space Telescope, NASA, TED Talks, Red Bull TV, CNet Podcasts, etc.

Was banned - Back and offering help to steal content.

I get it that content is expensive, but if everyone steals it and nobody pays for it - then media companies won't have money to make the stuff... for you to steal lol

KODI is legal by itself. Addons that enable piracy are not.

He is suggesting the latter - "turn the tables on cable companies that have been screwing everyone over since the beginning of time."

Once upon a time, I was out of university and was moving to a different apartment. I called the cable company in advance to inform them that I was moving and the day I was moving, I turned on the tv and the service was disconnected. 10 months later, I get a bill in the mail $800 for services and late fees, for 10 months of tv saying that I hadn't cancelled the service. After a few phone calls back and forth they insisted that if I didn't pay it, they were going to screw with my credit rating.

In 2003, I had a tv contract and phone contract that my provider inexplicably refused to consolidate onto one monthly statement. I cancelled both services but mistakenly paid my tv service into my phone account on time. On time, my net balance for both accounts combined was zero on time. Of course they waited 8 months before finally sending me a bill for $800, saying that I owed them that for my tv service. It cost me money to have my credit cleared. A few years ago I was going to return to this company but when it was time to sign up I was refused because according to them I had a currently delinquent account that I owed $800 on.

This has nothing to do with how the cable companies here intentionally overbill you almost every single month.

The bottom line is this. In Canada at least it is illegal for anyone to download copyrighted content and distribute it in any way. It is NOT illegal for me to source content as long as I am not sharing it with anyone. As long as it is NOT illegal in Canada to do what I am doing, the cable companies can go screw themselves.

If anyone wants any help or advice with anything having to do with Kodi, fire away.

I didn't, but I just did a search and it seems like a nice box and I had a box with identical specs and it worked quite well. It does have the minimum specs which are Android 6, 8GB of storage and 2GB of RAM. I'm sure that it will work perfectly fine if you only use it to stream tv. Once you set it up it will use around 5.5GB of storage. You will have to be careful about loading it with more because that will slow it down.

The price for sure is right at around $70.

Is this a plug and play device or do you have to do some programming, which I know nothing about.

Most of the boxes come loaded, but there can be a bit of programming needed if they aren't.

Netflix is legal and produces original content. Exodus is illegal and doesn't contribute to ****. People are getting busted in the UK for Exodus style streaming now, and it will come here eventually.
