Pick North is a strong Columbus program. Phillips coached Jake Butt and Pat Elflein so he has some history producing D1 players. Sounds like a good move.
Wasn't Pick North also where the Boren boys went? I can't keep those schools straight now that every Cbus suburb seemingly has a new one every other year, what with Olentangy, Hilliard, Dublin, Westerville, and the lot.
The Borens were at Pick Central.
Columbus is all suburban sprawl. There is some sort of gentleman's agreement with the schools up there that if enrollment at the high school gets to a certain point it mandates a split (of the big schools Reynoldsburg is the one community who hasn't done so). Dublin, Hilliard, Westerville and the Olentangy schools districts all have three large high schools.

That is not exactly how it works, but on that topic Olentangy is just about to open a 4th school. The district opened a 2nd school in 2004.

That was Liberty, right? I know we played them in the football playoffs my senior year and thought that was maybe their first year in existence. They were in the middle of a cornfield back then and now they're surrounded by huge sub-developments. Kind of crazy how much the north and west of Columbus has been growing.

Reynoldsburg actually opened a second high school, but both campuses are considered part of the same school. Students attend one or they other based on the focus of their curriculum.

Hell yeah.
A few years back when I did the Turkey Trot 10k, Mark Mallory was introduced as "the mayor of the State of Cincinnati." The person doing the introduction then quipped, "well, we all wish it was a state."

Every time we have a game against Senior away in football or basketball the team bus ends up in a Kewpee parking lot.

RE: Fickell's Coaching Staff
Fickell threw out the Reds' Opening Night pitch (arguably painting the corner for a strike). Of course with typical UC luck, the weather kept the stands pretty empty. The bright side was it apparently gave him air time during the rain delay. Here's a report from an OSU board:
Quote:In case anyone is interested, during a rain delay before the Reds game tonight, they interviewed Luke Fickell, who was at the game. Maybe there to throw out the first pitch? Anyway, interesting interview mostly focused on UC's football team but Fickell talked some about his experience at OSU including his year as interim head coach and some of the mistakes he made then. Among his comments:
- he wants everything at UC to be about competition
- he wants the offense to be uptempo but not necessarily one that tries for 100+ plays a game
- he wants the team to show roughness and establish a run-first mentality
- he wants to establish leadership across the team
- he personally feels that the coaches need to develop the players into men, not just football players
All this sound familiar? A very healthy dose of Urban Meyer.
Among the mistakes he made as interim head coach, he mentioned not delegated authority leading him to "meddle" in things he shouldn't have and not being himself. He seemed to be suggesting that he tried to be like Tressel instead of himself and the players knew that and perhaps were not willing to play for him as hard as if he had been himself.
UC's spring game is a week from Friday night (good friday) and will include a fish fry beforehand supposedly. He plans on scrimmaging two teams where most of the players are drafted (he will set up part of the two teams and let those players draft the rest).
Hopefully it will be televised here in Cincy.

RE: Fickell's Coaching Staff
Good to see the typical OSU arrogance on display... multiple posters saying he should use Cincinnati as a stepping stone to a job like Illinois or Maryland. I guess they think those jobs are head and shoulders above UC since they get the privilege of being OSU, Michigan, and Wisconsin's punching bags in the Big Ten. I give Fickell a lot more credit than that. I think he wants stability and is smart enough not to jump to a death sentence job at a Big Ten bottom dweller.

To be fair, I think they were both on the hot seat.
I don't see Fickell leaving for Maryland. He's spent his whole life in Ohio, despite obvious opportunities to leave. I don't think he goes to any job that's not in a bordering state (and even then he'd only got to a job that doesn't start with "M").
