Other names myself and others suggested:

Kevin Keatts, UNCW: 24-5 (145 SOS)... currently projected as a 12 seed
Steve Forbes, ETSU: 24-7 (223 SOS) ... NIT bound, at minimum
(My other choice) Brad Underwood, Oklahoma St.: 20-10 (27 SOS) ... currently projected as a 7 seed
Mark Fox, Georgia: 17-12 (15 SOS) ... currently in the Last 4 Out group
Andy Kennedy, Ole Miss: 18-12 (68 SOS) ... NIT bound
Matt McCall, Chattanooga: 17-11 (211 SOS) ... won't make post-season
Chris Beard, Texas Tech: 18-12 (108 SOS) ... probably going to miss post season

I was not on Penny bandwagon but thought we had a great shot at Buzz Williams but someone botched that up; if you have read the article on posted onTwitter where Bowen laid out the rules the committee went by, you would see why we could lose some candidates very easily. But I digress. BTW, the only coach on the above list who can sell tickets in his first year is Penny.

We need a coach who:

can coach or hire a great X and O's teaching assistant
get casual Tiger fans excited again (Does ANYONE think Tubby did that?)
get butts in the seats
have the respect of the players and be sure of yourself to cut them loose if not
put butts in the seat

Ironically, Tubby, Penny and Pastner would make some great combinations. You can figure out what they are given my criteria. But with the BIG CONTRACT, egos, etc it would be almost impossible to pull off a Penny/Tubby combination.

My suggestion was to offer Penny $1M a year as asst Head Coach and recruiting coordinator. He would double or triple that in BB revenue through additional season ticket sales and per seat donations. But would their egos allow them to work together?

Whatever happens, Tubby better hire a top notch recruiting assistant because he doesn't have one now and even local talent ain't going to beg to be on Tubby's teams.

All of you clowns already giving up on Tubby make me sick. Between the chronic complainers and those that insult others for fun, there just aren't too many of the old gang that made this board a good place to go for legitimate discussion and information. It is truly sad.

So do you believe Memphis is a much better basketball school than the others?

If so wouldn't you think that would translate into greater success. But again that will depend on if he can bring in higher level players.

Why hire Penny if Penny can filter players to the program legally all he wants now.
Because that does not seem to be actually happening...

Exactly. Lawsons go with dad. Moss looks like he's getting away from Memphis. So...Alex Lomax?

WHEN Keelon makes another leverage move, with he & his boys going elsewhere, I think you'll see Memphis area recruits coming back to Memphis, at least giving the Tigers serious consideration...JMO (but I have a couple of Memphis area coaching friends who would agree).

I've heard some rumblings like that as well. Not sure I believe anything at this point.

Shoulda kept pastner

Too bad.

Now he's coach of the year and the Tigers aren't
Going to post season again.

Sad that folks can't seem to see past the noses on their faces.

If Penny's not the answer, we're not asking the right questions. The dude knows basketball and has the chops. He's not Clyde Drexler and we ain't Houston.

Scott Cross UT Arlington, young and most likely available
Shaka from UT, his time is almost up
And the Coaching round robin will start after the tourney.

Ron Higgins, the former sports writer here at now down in New Orleans, speculated who would succeed Johnny Jones at LSU. He would look at the coaches at MTSU and Nevada. But he doubted the powers that be would promote an assistant coach instead.

It's amazing that DL had those amazing stats this year and as a team we did so badly the last 1/3 of the season. It became a big challenge for this team to score points and keep up.

I watched several conference championship games yesterday. The winning teams were finding a way to pass the the ball and take shots much closer to the basket and even have lay up opportunities. Amazing, we haven't done that for years!!

For those of you who complain about Tubby spending too much time on the golf course and at the same time wanting Penny to be head coach or on the staff in some capacity, well here's a news flash, Penny loves golf and plays a lot of golf. I play at Plantation 3 times a week and see Penny out there just about every time I play. Now, Penny is a great guy, a great fan and a big time supporter of the school. One thing as a Tiger fan I'll never forget, is the way Larry Finch was treated by some of the fan base and the way he was let go by the school he loved. I'd hate to see Penny go thru the same crap Larry went thru, and don't think for a minute the same thing wouldn't happen to Penny if things didn't work out.

Yeah, watching some of those games yesterday was somewhat bittersweet. How far we have fallen is painfully obvious.

I just do not see Penny as the answer. I have a feeling he probably does not want the job. It sounds like he enjoys flexibility in his schedule, flexibility He outdoor not have as a coach. Beyond that I just don't think a first time coach is what we would need for the next hire.

KUDOS!!!!! Gr8 observations and Gr8 points!!! I really feel that MTSU coach is a star in the making, also ETSU coach....I'm a REALLY big fan of Tommy Amaker and still think Tubby can do Gr8 things here, If, he's willing to put The RIGHT pieces around him....It's like Tubby has realized, even from his own standpoint, that father son relationships have dilemnas......It's a receipts for disaster as this team was ACTUALLY playing VERY well and being touted for the way the ball was being shared.....Then people/persons started to worry and focus on draft position or draft stock and that enigma infected/effected the entire team....That's why I've held the position that the Memphis brand needs a former NBA player/assistant as a coach......The closest and MOST obvious candidate just happens to be Penny because of his influences....

I also feel that Robert Pack would be a wonderful choice as a stepping stone to the NBA..(IF HE would coach on this level)....Love Mike Anderson at Arky, and think he would raise the bar here!!!! I think he would jump for the coin that we pay!!!!

I have no idea what happened, but it's obvious from what the people 'in the know' are saying out loud on this forum that Keelon made a leverage move with his kids, or people think he did.

Folks are hinting that it was solely the 'Memphis' issues that threw Tubby off his game.
It seems like some of y'all, or the Boosters that count, are saying this is enough reason to give Tubby and his son another shot at it...if he can't find his way out on his own.

Ain't no excuses gonna balance the scale 71 points worth, imo... that's too much degradation and humiliation ..for me. anyway. shrug.

Hiring Penny would not end well for either party, whenever that might be. I'm just not up for that a third time.
