RE: 2016 Rice basketball Season Thread
People seem to be forgetting that Rhoade's philosophy and overall game strategy starts with defense....with tight, pressing defense creating offense. Jackson and Egor are not particularly strong defenders. No question they'll both see considerable minutes, but I'd expect Rhoades to at least start the season with two rotations, with each having a balance of offense and defense. Mencey will see minutes since he's our best outside defender, and would expect him to be a killer on the press. Also, call me nuts, but I wouldn't be surprised one bit if Quez is our second leading scorer this year, with the majority of his points coming on put backs and fast break dunks. His potential is that high, IMO.

OK, you're nuts, Walt! But seriously, your description above has me salivating for basketball season to get here already. I think we're really gonna turn some heads in Men's hoops this season! Hope so, anyway. At least I know the games are going to be even more fun to watch, and I'll bet the students really start turning out in big numbers to Tudor Fieldhouse. Maybe they'll overflow to the sideline seating, too. bring back the Jungle Gym days 9but..with air conditioning this time!) They can still wear the outfits, anyway. Does the small MOB at Basketball games still play GnR's "Welcome to the Jungle" anymore?

RE: 2016 Rice basketball Season Thread
I have said this before but Quez seems to be the second coming of Michael Harris, a little skinnier and also taller, maybe a bit more raw. I first saw Michael Harris at Hot Dogs and Hoops before his freshman year season and was talking to Coach Wilson about his skills, who agreed he could really jump. Michael always played at 100% and had some of the most amazing hands I have ever seen on a court (other than maybe Arsalan)-he always could seem to get his hands on the ball. Funny story on Michael-I was talking to Coach Hartman last year about him and he laughed, rolled his eyes and said geez Michael just wasn't much on defense. Time to retire his number!!

Good story! Note if any MBB staff is reading: they still have Coach Hartman listed under the coaching tree, and have not yet put up Brent Scott's name or info. Maybe they're waiting for picture day.

I guess the more immediate question will be how will Big B do with the SEAL training upcoming late September?! Wonder if they can get Leebron out there for a day? That would be something! Heck, I'd invite any faculty that wanted to come participate as guests for a day!

actually if you go to the roster section, Brent is listed. You may be looking at the archive section for last year.....

Sorta correct. I was looking in the "More Info" drop-down on the website for Basketball. They do have the correct names on the "Roster" page, as you stated.

Jackson is a RS Jr this year but I see he is listed as a Sr certainly he was awarded an extra year???....I think Cashaw will get more minutes right from the start. He finished with best 3 pt% on the team and he really runs the floor well. He had some time on the bench because of lapses in defense but corrected those issues by end of year.

Tiki:

In basketball you don't get the extra year unless your eligibility has expired and that won't happen until the end of the season...At that point he applies and receives the additional year (just my understanding of the process).

Seems kind of silly. These kids have to plan their lives

Thanks, I had forgotten that.

I will go way out on a limb and predict 20+ wins and an NIT bid

If we stay healthy and the freshmen fully grasp Rhoade's defensive philosophy right from the start,I would agree.

How do we look compared to the other teams in conference? I remember feeling last year that the gap wasn't that wide. Perhaps there are 2-3 teams that are still clearly ahead of us, but with the players we've been recruiting and the ones coming back, I'd like to think we will contend for C-USA any day now.

MTSU and UAB are probably a step above us, but that's about it I think.

Agree. Between that and a pretty weak set of preseason opponents, twenty wins really does seem attainable.

I predicted 20+ last year before Jackson and Lott injured their knees. I really think that would have happened if Jackson and Lott had not been injured (maybe even if only one of them had been injured). I absolutely believe the team will win 20+ this year with those guys back, plus the incoming freshman (with only Guercy departing). Stay healthy guys!

I think one of tournaments below the NIT is more likely. We would probably have to get well into the top 100 for the NIT unless we win the regular season conference title. I think the NCAAs might actually be more likely except for our absolutely dismal conference tournament history.

Jeff Jones has got a pretty good thing going at ODU. They will be in the mix, though Rice has played them tough more often than not.
