Todd Mundt 2.0.
Todd Mundt had talent. Got a decent look with Atlanta Hawks as well. If this kid is Todd Mundt then he's a fine pickup.

If a kid can't play, he can't play
This signing is about as big as the team adding a 6'11 walk on. The kid never played a game at Baylor and now we are happy to have him cause he's big? Come on guys Tubbys staff had enough time when they got here if they were any good at their job to sign some guys that might actually be able to give the team something.
Signing a guy who never played and chasing a guy looking for a sixth year of eligibility is not what Memphis recruiting is supposed to be. Hell this is worse than Josh filling a class with mostly juccos.
Big f'ing deal. These guys are not gonna play beyond this year.
Yes but look at who they are in on for next year ummm nobody so if this is what catch up recruiting looks like for this staff then we are in a bad spot next year hopefully tubby can win games and make Memphis level talent want to cone here but I'm rel disappointed in this staff recruiting wise.

Apparently what sealed the deal for this guy is that Tubby cut short his vacation to come back and give the kid a face to face.
Now, the bigger question is how the fruck is a guy who has been on the job less than four months already taking vacations?
Good lord, man.

Well, not sure how much of his lack of playing was injury and how much was lack of ability. The video posted earlier is 6 years old, so who knows what he looks like now, but my guess is that this kid won't contribute much. I hope he surprises.

If he cut his vacation short and came back and had a face to face then it could not have been dead period. If it was he could not have had the face to face.

Where in my post did you see dead period
Quiet period
The quiet period tightens things a bit more, preventing any off-campus contact or viewing. Visits to the college's campus and written or electronic communications are still permitted.
Coaches often try to have prospects visit campus unofficially during this time in the spring and early summer, so that they can become familiar with campus.
Dead period
The dead period is the most restrictive. No in-person contact is allowed, even if a prospect makes a visit to the college campus. Written and electronic communications are still permitted.
And yet, prospects still do decide to commit to schools in late December and early January, often because they've considered all their options, taken all their visits, and are ready to pull the trigger.
Might want to read the post and understand the rules. The poster suggested that the coach took some off days because it might be a quiet period.
I am really tired of the people on this board that run down a coach before he even has a chance. Makes no sense.

Maybe
Then again losing your starting center in late July AND not having recruited a backup center in the 3+ months on the job AND signing a grad trans with zero DI playing time as the replacement tends to deserve criticism at schools that actually care about hoops.

RE: Rykhoek commits
Chad posted a picture of himself and Coach Smith along with the following comment:
New coach and basketball legend Coach Tubby Smith Just wanted to share a little of my recruiting story to show what kind of guy he is along with his assistants I was previously scheduled to visit Memphis tomorrow (Sunday) but found out late Wednesday night I needed to make my decision sooner , by Friday. At this point Coach Smith was out of town on vacation but proceeded not only to talk to me and my Mom on the phone multiple times around midnight but also offered to leave his vacation so that I could come visit the next day (Thursday) Turns out I decided to accept that offer as I really wanted to give Memphis a chance before committing elsewhere. So within about 15 hours me and coach were both landing in Memphis for the visit which was prepared for us overnight by Coach Esposito (Assistant) Another amazing thing is the fact that he chose to stick with us the entire visit touring around which is almost unheard of for a head coach to do . Needless to say it's going to be a great journey at U of M and I can't wait to get started and play for people of such high character

When he took the job has two very good recruits coming in and a talented but still saw big man returning at center. Since that time we have lost the top recruit we had coming in and our only returning big man and replaced them with some lower level recruits. Thank God that Rivers had already signed his LOI of we may have lost him too.

Even if this guy doesn't contribute at least he is another practice player...It is a win...No real downside to this at this point.

RE: Rykhoek commits
Take 5: No need to demonize players who leave U of M
Geoff Calkins
Five quick thoughts on Memphis news from the weekend:
1. Former Memphis forward Austin Nichols took a shot at his old school in the course of talking about the University of Virginia’s upcoming trip to Spain. “I would have never gotten this type of opportunity at my last school,” Nichols told the website streakingthelawn.com. “We did everything on the cheap over there.” I’d link to the story itself but the quote and any reference to Nichols was subsequently edited out of the piece.
2. It was a graceless thing for Nichols to say. Of course it was. That’s why it was edited out. Is it true that Virginia has more money to spend than Memphis? Yes. Absolutely. And Nichols wasn’t all wrong when he said that Memphis was trying to rein in basketball spending, particularly during his second year at the school. But why go out of his way to take a shot, now that he’s playing somewhere else? Especially since the Memphis women’s basketball team is about to embark on a 10-day trip to — you guessed it — Spain.
3. Having said all that, there’s no need to demonize Nichols, just as there’s no need to demonize Tarik Black, Nick King or anyone else who transferred away from Memphis. Those players all signed up to be Tigers. They wanted it to work out. It’s been a rough few years in the program, and they were casualties as much as anything else, so why not cut them a little slack?
4. Jason Williams — no, not that one — of the Cincinnati Enquirer wrote this about the Big 12 chase: "Source: BYU Big 12's No. 1 overall. Oklahoma wants Cincy. Texas of course wants Houston. Don't be surprised if compromise is Cincy & Houston.” Translating that, Williams is suggesting that even though BYU is the No. 1 overall choice, the conference might settle on Cincinnati and Houston instead. That’s possible, of course, but there are so many contradictory reports out there, I wouldn’t panic just yet, Memphis fans. Just last week, there was a report that the Big 12 was going to limit its expansion to two teams (bad for Memphis), and a report that Memphis was “picking up steam” (good for Memphis) and a report that Oklahoma didn’t want to be in a conference with Memphis (bad for Memphis) and you get the general idea. Nobody seems to know anything definitive when it comes to Big 12 expansion.
5. Finally Chad Rykhoek — a former Baylor big man who recently announced would be enrolling at Memphis — wrote a nice little story on social media about his recruitment. He was particularly impressed that “Coach Smith was out of town on vacation but proceeded not only to talk to me and my Mom on the phone multiple times around midnight but also offered to leave his vacation so I could come visit the next day.” A good number of Memphis fans read this story and said, “Oh, isn’t that great about Coach Smith working on vacation?” Just as many read it and said, “WHAT? Tubby was on vacation? When he had nine scholarship players? We’re doomed!” That’s the nature of basketball in this city. It’s just not like every other place.
