Police officers and federal law enforcement agents scoured the city carrying assault rifles seeking residents who have holed up to avoid forcible eviction, as well as those who are still considering evacuating voluntarily to escape the city's putrid waters.
Quote:Mr. Compass, the police superintendent, said that after a week of near anarchy in the city, no civilians in New Orleans will be allowed to carry pistols, shotguns, or other firearms of any kind. "Only law enforcement are allowed to have weapons," he said.
That order apparently does not apply to the hundreds of security guards whom businesses and some wealthy individuals have hired to protect their property. The guards, who are civilians working for private security firms like Blackwater, are openly carrying M-16s and other assault rifles.
Mr. Compass said that he was aware of the private guards but that the police had no plans to make them give up their weapons.
But remember everybody, Redtom said the government isn't coming for your guns!

They are found because guns, like cars, are required to be registered. You aren't advocating for no gun registration whatsoever are you???
Yes, I am against any gun registration because as the overwhelming evidence shows it leads to confiscation.
That is just patently false. You can't point to any widespread or even minor confiscation of weapons in America.
Did he say 'in America'? I don't see it... and I am less 'on his side' on this issue
We all agree that America is 'very early' in these stages because unlike other countries, we have a Constitutional protection (something your partner in crime essentially admits when speaking about 'western' countries).
But while they haven't done anything YET to enforce this, it seems clear that they're certainly TRYING to get people to 'voluntarily' (at this point, though clearly under threat of potential further action) turn in their guns.
I think you would have significantly less resistance to registration if it also came with some sort of affirmation /clarification that owning guns for home/personal defense or sport was a right protected by the Constitution... but instead what we get is letters warning us that by registering our guns, we have allowed the government to 'convict' us of offenses by our own admission 'after the fact'... with no actual crime committed.

No clue who Redtom is, but Redwingtom is telling all of you, with complete confidence, that the government isn't coming from your guns.
It will never cease to amaze me as to how easily many in this country have been so easily brainwashed by the NRA.
Extrapolating a horrific natural disaster in New orleans and 500 letters to law breakers in New York to the federal government confiscating your guns????? Puhleeze!

Do Democrats make it a habit to propose legislation to ban the possession of things they aren't "coming for"?

The argument that it is just for muskets would seem to fly in the face of the fact that the same group also want us to interpret the Constitution as a living document. If it is living then it is built to adapt to more than muskets.

I know, but it gets old always having the last post in gun threads because I back them into a corner, they stop responding and let the thread fall off the first page, and then a few days go by, and they're back spewing the same BS in a new thread.

Yep! Then if you keep beating them in discussions, they'll either put you on ignore or try to troll you.

There are ways to update it. It's written in there.
