Amazing recruiter, you can thank nation, curry, Cooke for him, they almost left with him when he did.
Not so sure on X and O.
Needs to hire solid assistants, especially to help run actual program day to day.
If you know Jeff you know he will hire him, Jeff loves Rowe.
As is he is a 6.5 compared to coach K, but he is a solid above average hire for us, knows school and area, great recruiter, has great energy, players will be passing classes, lots of donors who remember his time with lefty will be excited about the hire.
You also said it was a name that was not yet mentioned. Which was incorrect....
I'm pretty sure that was someone else that said that, not Barkers. Barkers clearly has his ear pressed to the wall of the executive men's room.

I had said a name that hadn't been mentioned. Came down to Lou and another guy. Wasn't sold that Lou would get it so was trying to prepare for a surprise.

I'll pray for you brother, wish you nothing but the best.
Funny thing is you use to pass by me everyday and be very polite and wanted to speak, is it because my committee got rid of your beloved Mickey and finally got game day here?! So sorry

1) A distinguished player with professional experience
2) Direct ties to JMU
3) Experience at JMU - there will be few 'Oh really, surprises for him'
4) Seemed to hit all the boxes for character, engagement, and involvement when here as an assistant
5) Retaining Dean is helpful
Negative:
1) No head coaching experience
2) Not on any short lists for up and coming assistants
3) Has to carry the Dillard baggage (An alum coming home to coach)
4) Has to carry the Keener baggage (part of his staff)
5) has to carry the Brady baggage (part of his staff)
It is hard for an AD to make a coach walk into a hole following winning 21 games and returning a senior laden team - ours did. We clearly just wanted to be rid of Brady and are unwilling to come close to market. I sure hope we followed the same approach with Alger and he is compensated at the low end, commensurate with his inability to deliver results.
I think the connection to the program is big. BSBK has already touched on this. Lou Rowe is in his 40s- he played at JMU in the 90s- his peers (guys he played against or with) many of them are involved in coaching at the high school/AAU level etc. some even have high school aged children- those relationships are key to tap into. It also helps engage the fan base and connect to a time at JMU (the Lefty era) when there was more interest, more buzz, and more success. I think you will see that in attendance at the Convo and alum who are around the same age and in a position in their careers to give back donating more.
The one thing I was a little disappointed by was Deane. No offense to Coach Deane. I can understand maybe in Lou's coaching career he hasn't coached along side many assistants with Deane's experience and Coach Deane can help Lou but I would have preferred a fresh start in terms of the staff and if he retained anyone maybe one of the younger assistants.
I would love to see/hear about ex JMU players (maybe even ex teammates of Rowe's) who can fill out the staff and maybe emulate what Kenny Brooks did on the women's side- an all JMU alum staff- guys Rowe's age or younger who get it and can really connect with kids and the community and develop a culture at JMU.
I'm also interested to learn about the system- offensive and defensive philosophy moving forward- hopefully we will learn more about that on Tuesday at the press conference. I think we all had some issues with the merry go round offense. The defense was improved in recent years but the style still could be better IMO. Some of that may have just been playing the best system with the personnel that they had.

I will be very surprised to see attendance go up and donations increase just because he is the new coach. I don't see the alumni getting that excited by this hire. That will correlate directly with winning not because he played at JMU in the 90's.

I hate to say this but... Alums would have been a lot more excited about hiring a Tony Bennett disciple rather than an unproven, and unknown, JMU alum.
Yes, we all know who Lou is, and his ties to the university, but 98% of alums do not and would be far more interested in a UVA assistant. Pains me to say that.

shouldn't pain you to say that our fanbase would be more interested in the top assistant from a team that's been in the top 5 the past three years.

Yeah, I'd love to know how far they got, or didn't get, before Sanchez walked.

Jeff Bourne pulled a Jeff Bourne. The change needs to come with the AD position.

You know, a few days before Rowe was decided on barkers made a statement that didn't really get as much attention as it might deserve and that's that the next HC would be a black coach. If Jon Alger steered Jeff Bourne toward hiring a black coach we have much, much, much more serious problem in this administration.

OK, I will play along. I always feel that the best candidate should be hired regardless of race to fill HC positions at JMU......however this one was a bit different. With both EW and KB leaving this year --- JMU had ZERO minority coaches and that did need to be addressed with this hire. If this hire had not gone to a qualified black candidate every head coach at JMU would be white.........and that would NOT have been a good thing. It's just the way it worked out with EW and KB both leaving this year.

That's ridiculous. Both EW and KB left on their own accord, it wasn't like they were fired. Both would still be in their positions if they didn't feel they had better opportunities elsewhere. You hire the best coach. Period. If the coach was being black was part of the hiring criteria, I have a huge problem with it.

There can be some very valid arguments made in hiring a minority coach. So even if her steered him towards that decision I wouldn't have any issues with it. And When we hired EW , look at the results on the field, you cannot argue that at all. And maybe the only assistants Barkers knew were serious were all minorities.
