RE: Coach Keatts
You couldn't be more right. Kevin has built his career around player development at Hargrave. That was his job. For those who have had the opportunity to get to know him, he is passionate about what he does, and his passion is infectious. You can tell he believes in his players, and you can tell his players believe in him. But, beyond that, he is available and he knows how to connect with anyone who has an interest in the program. From young to old, from knowledgeable to novice, he devotes his time and attention to all, and makes them feel special.
UNCW is a basketball school in search of a basketball culture. Thursday was the first step in building that culture back. Words cannot describe the scene in Trask coliseum. Camraderie, enthusiasm, connectedness, electricity. Nobody who attended seemed to notice that there were no players, there were no coaches, and there was no game being played on that floor. We cheered, and chanted, and did our best to will our coach and players on with our energy and enthusiasm. When we left, we had enjoyed a game time experience even though there was no game on the floor. A new tradition has been established, and Trask should be packed for the CAA tournament and the NCAA's in the future.
Our new Chancellor is from Brazil, and I can tell you he and his wife were completely overwhelmed by what just occurred. They had no idea that the basketball culture in North Carolina and UNCW is like the soccer culture in Brazil. For you North Carolinians who have a few years on you, you remember the ACC tournament as a kid in High School. And you likely have the same memory I did even though I went to HS in Greensboro where it was played. We didn't do school, we did the ACC tournament. Televisions were rolled into class, and that was our education for the week. It was an education far beyond anything that could be taught. For that week, we were knit together throughout the state. We all shared the same experience, and all could participate in a game that most of us wish we could play in. Hero's were made, and allegiances forged. You HAD to have a team, and that team became your identity. It meant something to be a Carolina fan, or a State fan. It meant something to be a Duke fan.
And now, we need it to mean something to be a Seahawk fan throughout the state. We have our own identity, and Kevin Keatts is the man who can create that. He can create his own program. He can be the Dean Smith of Carolina. He can become the Coach Valvano of NC State. He can become the coach K...of UNCW.
The fans are here waiting. The alumni are in place throughout the country. The students are ready. And the mecca of basketball in North Carolina is ready to embrace a new legend at UNCW.
LET'S DO THIS....
