Winning a conference title no matter the league is not insignificant. Winning 26 games even against horrible competition isn't insignificant.
Certainly I am in the camp that judges basketball success largely on NCAA appearances and wins but not achieving that doesn't equate to a mediocre season. This was a great season by virtually every standard except reaching the NCAA tournament, which there are lots of other folks in that same boat with us.
Haase is a good coach and we are lucky to have him. He isn't Roy Williams, yet anyway. But he is exactly the kind of coach UAB needs. He is still young and developing his own style. All of these experiences help shape who he is as a person and as a coach. Anyone who heard him post game knows that he was very choked up by the ending of this season. I think this can pay dividends in the offseason. We have the core of this team who has been shown they have the skill to beat top level NCAA tournament teams. In addition, they have been shown that when they let their guard down it can cost them dearly and result in them watching the tournament in their living room. In my view that's a good combination because they now should have confidence but not arrogance and assume that opponents are going to bow down to them.
Schedule better. Play with passion, and there won't be a team in America looking forward to playing UAB.
I like your optimism, and I basically agree with everything you say. The X factor with next years team is being able to find that ability to play at a high level all of the time, play up to our talent level, and play at an even keel. If our style of play from this season continues, we'll be back in the NIT or out of the postseason all together.

The other teams already duck us like a stalker ex-girlfriend debt collector.
We may not be able to get a game of jacks next year.

In your conversations with them, do you tell them they are soft and quitters?
They are soft but not quitters. I don't blame the guys either. We have plenty of talent. They are a reflection of this staff. Good recruiters but average coaches.
I'm not their buddies but I know of them, pretty well. Enough to know they not reading this stuff. Bunch of older guys arguing about college sports is the least of their worries. With staying eligible, training, and trying to have a life outside of that they not browsing BlazerTalk. Real college players know it's a business and approach it as such. They not namby pambs that can't take any heat or they wouldn't be where they are. If you had any experience with real college athletics you would know that. But closest you will ever get is your occasional trips to the Arena and your media guides. So enjoy Memphis, closet Tiger, and I'll enjoy Birmingham and UAB.

RE: NIT: BYU Game Thread
I'm not saying we haven't accomplished great things or that this season was mediocre...the team just didn't accomplish what they set out to do. The achievements this year were secondary to that goal. You won't find anybody directly involved with the team that will tell you otherwise.
Now is the time to appreciate the highlights of this year and move on to next season, but there's no sense in trying to act like the goal hasn't been an NCAA trip since the start of the season.
We underachieved based on the expectations that our history and our current coach and players setup. We failed to accomplish the goal that this team set out to do. It's okay, what's done is done. Next year will be a new opportunity for redemption.

You really are a idiot and a fool if you think I'm a closet Tiger fan. And based on your posts, it doesn't really sound like you enjoy UAB, unless you enjoy trashing the players when they are down, calling them soft. Maybe you enjoy bragging about how you think you know more about basketball than others have forgotten.

Very good post. Sorry to dis you. I get emotional when I see our jersey get dunked on repeatedly by polygamous cultists.
It was a good season but not even close to great. NCAA should always be our goal but this team had an NCAA win and all starters returning. Even a win or two in the NIT would have been a disappointment.
We have the players. Haase has to find somehow to get them to play every minute like those first minutes of the second half tonight. More on and off intensity will just lead to another season of what might have been.

Spot on ^^
While we had a very nice season, the regular season awards are secondary to the primary objectives, which is to make the NCAA tourney, win games, and compete for a championship. While we had a very memorable regular season that I actually really enjoyed, we failed miserably at our primary objective.

Any member of this team will tell you they underachieved this season. Their number one goal was to win the CUSA Tournament and return to the NCAA Tournament. They failed to achieve that goal pretty miserably. It doesn't mean this wasn't a good and enjoyable season.

No, I just enjoy sticking it to full of **** gasbag like you. I'm pretty certain I have forgotten more about basketball than you know, just by reading years of your ignorance. That not much to brag about though. If there was a prize for biggest jerk in the UAB fanbase, you would win.

Depends on the voting method.
If it were done via electoral college, there'd probably be a contested convention.

Green, I'm glad you "know" everything. All the old geezers here feel better. As for players not reading the board we have current and former athletes that are registered members here as well as some telling me that they just lurk and read. Maybe they don't tell you? IDK? We also have former and current coaches that read the board. How do I know? They have told me in private. maybe they just don't like telling you everything.
Oh and simmer down now.........
Oh and anyone thinking we need a coaching change needs to have their head examined.
As for the schedule, it will be better next year but not a world beater as we cannot force teams to play us and there is also a shift to cut out the non-power teams by simply not playing them or only playing hem in buy games. (been happening for some time but now its becoming obvious) That said we may be playing three SEC teams next year depending on what happens so there is that.
Didn't say I knew everything. I know some of the former players that read and post here (ask The Dragon). Just said that the players on this basketball team don't read this board and don't care what anybody here thinks. One might very infrequently look at it for a laugh but that's it. I know that straight from their mouths but whatever. My source isn't some hyper fan adult that they tell what they want to hear.
Also never said we need a new coach. The one we have just needs to get his guys to play every minute like the game depended on it. He can get good players here, he just can't get them to give consistent effort. It's obvious to those who are the tiniest bit objective.
