The article states it is by invite only, but indicates the First Lady Michelle Obama will attend before joining her husband at the festival. If she got an invite, obviously He would have.

Obama also skipped the funeral last month of Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia

I hereby release all of my friends and associates from any feeling of obligation to attend my funeral if they have the opportunity to attend any good quality music festival. Bluegrass or blues festivals, Merlefest, Fiddler's convention, SXSW, tickets to ACLs, whatever. Please go hear some moving, enriching, soothing, or hard driving music and do so with no regrets.

Fulfilling the duties of the office is just not his thang.

nancy was as solid of a woman and first lady that any man would love to have hanging under the pit.....

as much as I disliked ronnie's policies (especially the residual impact of the war on drugs and trade negotiations), she promoted education and paying attention......

that's a good woman in my book.....ronnie can suck my raw steak....a chimp could've beaten carter.....

I'm nowhere near being a democrat, but if I had the chance to attend Barack's or Michelle Obama's funeral I'd mortgage my left nut if I had to to be able to make it. Any Supreme Court Justice I'd do the same.

This. I have respect for the office regardless of who is elected. I would never turn down the opportunity to be a part of anything presidential regardless of how I felt about that particular president's politics.

It's not about "wanting" to be there. It's about what the President should do when a SCJ , former president / first lady, or someone of that caliber dies.

Good. Im sure the family is happy this person that has NOTHING in common with Ron or Nancy will not be in attendance.

Can't miss that tee time. I doubt he is really going to be missed.

As head of state, sometimes you just have to suck it up and do icky stuff.

Actually it's Obama that is always on the Clock whenever anything happens. Vacations, Golf Trips, Festivals ect. all have Their priorities.

Presidents don't typically attend former First Lady funerals unless there is a direct connection between them. That seems to be something you guys like to ignore in order to push your agenda.

Stop bringing facts to this blame Obama thread for any reason. While I personally think he should go, if you really look at the history of when a First Lady passes, the sitting President does not normally attend.

But lets continue to that dead horse.

George W Bush and three first ladies, including Reagan, attended Betty Ford's funeral.

Jimmy Carter, Bill Clinton, and at least five first ladies attended Lady Bird Johnson's funderal.

Gerald Ford and Ronald Reagan attended Pat Nixon's funeral.

Kennedy, Truman, Eisenhower and Johnson (VP), including first ladies, all attended Eleanor Roosevelt's funeral.


Point being, it's not about agenda. It's about respect and decency. Obama never misses a tee time but would rather go to music conference than attend the funerals of his SC Justice and a former first lady of US.

It would be a Presidential think for Obama to do; however, at least his wife is attending, which is nice.

I have no real problem with this. I prefer Obama on the golf course. He is least dangerous there.
