So did he leave because of JMU not going FBS or was he just a mercenary?

JMU Football lost its Head Coach to Texas State
Almost all FCS programs are a stepping stone. Just like any job, your goal is always the next ring up. Even Craig Bohl (I think that's his name) left NDSU for FBS powerhouse Wyoming. Occasionally you get someone who likes where they are, whether it's emotional tie or a realization that head coach at FCS has its perks (though these seem to be fewer and fewer). Withers used to be coach at UNC; to think he was staying there is absurd. He probably had hopes of JMU going FBS, and then being able to prove himself again. He'll probably be at Texas State for three or four years and then try to jump up to a P5 gig.

The thing that sucks for JMU is that National Signing Day is 4 weeks from today. They need to hire a coach and hope they can keep the existing recruits or find new ones. Supposedly Withers may be taking many coaches with him so there may be questions on who can try to comfort the existing recruits until the coach is hired.

Why can't someone hire Richmond's head coach?

RE: JMU Football lost its Head Coach to Texas State
Is it bad that my first thought was to look at their commitments and offers?
We already have a QB, but they have a commit from A 3* dual threat QB with a few FBS offers. I wonder if Withers and the success of Vad was the draw there. I guess we'll see.

JMU Football lost its Head Coach to Texas State
Without knowing anything about Texas State, I would imagine a fully healthy JMU team would have beaten Texas State 9 out of 10 times this year.
The FBS.......*sigh*
Agree this is just another stepping stone for Withers

My guess, he was totally humiliated because the JMU Girls Basketball team lost to the W&M Girls BB team; so he left town.
I don't know whether to read the JMU Board on this subject right now; or savor the thought until tomorrow when the Thread on this subject is up to 500 posts.

Remember when JMU was our "rival"???
They don't beat us in any sport any more. Big sports, small sports, olympic sports... its nearly a sweep now. Even our ladies hoops team beats them now.
And of course there is no academic comparison.
I still remember the "suicide school" posters at Zable Stadium. I've been hit by countless purple streamers over the years. And don't get me started on the vulgar insults outside their stadium in Harrisonburg.
Honestly, F them. I hope they chase that FBS dream and leave the conference. Good riddance; they're just dragging our conference down now.

RE: JMU Football lost its Head Coach to Texas State
A bad recruiting class can cripple a program for years. They'll need at least two weeks to search for, interview, vet, and select his replacement. There's that whole Commonwealth of Virginia application process, you know.
If just one potential coach backs out at the last minute, JMU will have to scramble to find another. Then, the new coach has to relocate, assemble a staff, and start weeding through recruits. Convincing a kid to remain committed with only a week or so to go will be an arduous task. It'll come down to schemes, potential to start, stability, personalities, etc.
That FCS Title was a long time ago...new recruits were in elementary school at the time. Fresh off a humiliating loss to a PL school, faded FBS aspirations, and the guys who recruited them are gone...that'll be what matters to most of them.

Re: JMU Football lost its Head Coach to Texas State
I don't think there is enough time to properly search for a coach. Unless they are willing to throw ridiculous money at someone, why would an aspiring coach put themselves in that recruiting nightmare. Trying to convince current commits to stay and convincing guys you recruited before to change up. All the while trying to get current players with no relationship with you to buy in. Difficult to do normally, and herculean to do in the time Withers gave them. I think their best shot is to try to retain an assistant from within that can relate to the current players and that actually has ties to the recruits/University. Word is that Withers is taking most of the coaches with him, so I'm not sure it's a viable option.
I usually rejoice in JMU drama, but man, Withers really screwed those kids and the school.

Tough to blame Withers on the timing of all of this. They knew he was applying for FBS schools and Texas State made their decision when they did. The timing hurts them but it is what it is and JMU should have been ready for it (maybe they are?)

Our leadership isn't proactive. I highly doubt they were ready for this, and I highly doubt we hire a coach in the next 3 weeks.

Probably best to just try to hold on to as many recruits as possible & take the time to get the best coach JMU can recruit.
