RE: Coaching changes
My gut is telling me if nothing else Coach Campbell will end up at Minnesota. They have a history of doing well bring in MAC coaches (Glen Mason and Kill) not much success bringing in coaches from anywhere else. I hope I am wrong he can stay here as long as I wants to.

I wouldn't wish that on him but why do you say so? Maryland got potential in the B10?

I just looked at a map. Hadn't realized how far it is from just about anywheres. What an odd place for a Tech school.

Another thing I'd not realized. He's not been more than about 150 miles from home. That leaves him Morgantown, Pittsburgh, and maybe the Case Western/John Carrol area of Cleveland as the only coaching options with livable places for his family.

I think the East Coast would be easy pickings, if you had the right recruiter. No one on the east coast gives a crap about college football, Penn St sucks, Rutgers sucks, UConn Sucks, VaTech is getting a new coach, Syracuse stinks, Virginia is mediocre, and the list goes on and on. If the right guy lands out east, a major player could be built.

Campbell is young enough not to have to take the first big $$$$ offer waved in his face. In that regard I suspect that he is more like Pinkel than Beckman. As I understand it Pinkel quietly declined inquiries of interest regarding a number of possible positions, and the only two that he actually pursued were his "dream job" at Washington where the AD led him down the garden path (in order to hid her secret pursuit of Rick Neuheisel) followed by Pinkel's interest in the Missouri job which he accepted. For years he always said that he already had a good job so he did not need to constantly seek out a new one.
Frankly, Maryland hasn't been a premier football program since the late 1940s-early 1950s when Jim Tatum was their coach. That is not to say that they haven't had a decent year once in while since then as they have had a few decent coaches for short periods such as Jerry Claiborne and Bobby Ross but these isolated periods of success were short lived. Maryland could not assert itself even in the ACC which is generally considered a weaker football conference than the B1G where they now find themselves. Finally and perhaps most importantly, historically since the ACC was formed in 1953 Maryland has primarily been a basketball school just as is Duke and Carolina.
While perhaps not as bad as the Illinois job Beckman took, IMO Maryland is not a great football job.

Don't know how Va Tech will go but I would not be terribly surprised if they promoted long time coordinator Bud Foster to the top spot. As I recall Bud Foster actually expressed some interest in the Toledo head job when Pinkel left (as did Joe Paterno's son)but after that he evidently gave up his aspirations to pursue a head coaching job, so I don't even know if he would even want the top job at Va Tech.
P.S.---the saying use to be "all dirt roads lead to Virginia Tech"---but then I guess that is part of its charm.

Pinkel made a promise to his wife (at the time), that all of their kids would graduate from the same high school...... That was one reason he stayed so long.

I think a similar promise from Campbell to his wife would be appropriate. NO JOB CHANGE UNTIL HIS KIDS GRADUATE FROM A NORTHWEST OHIO HIGH SCHOOL.

I remember that as well, but that is not the kind of promise a coach who is not OK with his current position or is just eager to climb the coaching ladder as quickly as possible is likely to make in the first place.

While all of that is true, the right coach can make anything work. It wasn't that long ago that teams like TCU, Baylor, Ole Miss, etc were considered impossible jobs. There are others that would have been considered great jobs in the past, but not so much now (Syracuse, Miami FL, Texas, Penn St).

nobody is saying Campbell needs a raise
We should probably wait to see how this "gauntlet" turns out.
If he goes 1-3 I still think he is gonna get offers.
