Some interesting things said today in Benson's teleconference. Some pretty telling things.
First, there was a high degree of non-committal on nmsu and Idaho. And Benson really confirmed the separation between the affiliates and the full members in the decision to add coastal. The decision was about completing the division format committed to three years ago for the sole purpose of building a stable conference for its full members.
Another key revelation is that affiliates will be discussed after ncaa ruling on deregulation of championships. I have to say: if the ncaa in fact deregulates, it's very bad news for both Idaho and NMSU's future in the sun belt.
Should the proposed ruling pass, there is an excellent chance Idaho is gone, and NMSU only stays if the group decides to stay at 12 football playing members. So, another full member would need to be added should full membership be extended to NMSU.
UTA's decision to add football would need to be announced to the conference before the NCAA championship in Phoenix. While I rate this possibility rather low, should UTA decide to field football... it would also likely mean that NMSU and Idaho are both through in the SBC.
So back to Benson: He clearly stated that the decision is 10 or 12 in football. It has to be 12 if NCAA rules to uphold 12 team championships. If championship deregulation passes, the decision to even have a conference championship can be completely disconnected from the decision to continue with affiliate members.
What does this all mean? It means the conference intended from the spring meetings to add a member to complete its division structure. And now, we are covered either way the NCAA championship deregulation decision goes. If the propsed rule passes: I fully expect that puts both affiliate members on the clock.
At best, NMSU will get one more chance to be considered as a full member. If they do get in, it almost certainly means another east division member is invited to balance the committed divisional structure. A more likely scenario is the league shrinks to 10/12 in football/basketball and focuses on the decision to hold a championship and agree on a format.
I think we need to strive to be at 12 football regardless of whether or not deregulation passes. There is safety in numbers. Other conferences can react to conference realignment by reaching into other FBS conferences due to the current "pecking order". The Sun Belt is the only one that is, at this time, really forced to transition FCS programs.
Quite true. I also like 12 football members, and I'd much prefer them to be full members. I expect there will be a spirited discussion this spring at the NCAA championship about what to do. There are really are good alternatives to Idaho and NMSU in the new footprints, but they all are in the east, unless the west is willing to look at schools they have locked out of consideration in the past. The good news is this discussion will not be about survival, so we can focus on program strength and what's best for the conference. But I have to say: I did not expect to hear the amount of arms legnth rhetoric about the affiliate members that I did today.

I actually think that rotating East/West makes a lot of sense. As much as I'd hate to travel in a year where App (hopefully some day) had a clearly superior year, I would hate to put the conference fate into the hands of the polls. The power ratings are influenced heavily by the strength of schedule and the majority of the schedule is pre-determined by the conference. Even if the divisions started out being relatively evenly matched, they probably won't stay that way and a team shouldn't be penalized for CONFERENCE scheduling that is outside their control (for better or worse).

RE: Sunbelt Championship Game?
I say have it on the Friday night in Atlanta before the SEC Championship game. Not just because it is in Atlanta and thats where I am, but because SEC people have wondered in to the Dome the night before the Chic-Fil-A kickoff to watch us. I remember there were a decent amount of orange floating around the Dome when we opened in 2012. Tennessee, Auburn & Clemson were playing that year. But I have seen Alabama Crimson in the past. I could imagine since we have a similar footprint, and most fans arrive that afternoon or Thursday night, Sun Belt could probably pull in a decent number and would be a better matchup than what our openers have been.

It's about the cash. You don't want to increase your chance of losing out on Access Bowl money for the whole conference just because the possession arrow happens to point to your lower ranked team.

Hosted by the team with best conference record.
My tie breakers:
Head to head.
If either/both team ranked by CFP, highest hosts.
Best overall record.
Coin flip.

RE: Sunbelt Championship Game?
True. I understand that and couldn't argue with it. I'm just saying that the ranking doesn't always represent the better team.
I'm not a decision maker, so I can think theoretically. I really wouldn't have a problem with a system that someone "stacked the deck" to help the conferences best team advance.

Yup, that was the only statement that really caught my eyes, his grouping of "core members" and affiliate members was quite clear and emphasized. He left plenty to read between the lines there.

This anything else and attendance plummets unless the site just happens to be close one team even then it will suffer.
If ranking does not work rotate East / West, best conf record or most FBS wins and of course head to head.

For three hours in the morn and three hours in the evening it is. As long as out of towners and not causing wrecks weekends are pretty much smooth sailing.

It's no worse than DC or LA. Big cities have traffic. But on a Friday night at say 8 o'clock, the traffic disappears on the connector. It wouldn't be a problem.

RE: Sunbelt Championship Game?
Any word or solid speculation on what division alignment will be?
Sidenote: if you think any G5 conference should play a neutral site CCG, just excuse yourself from the conversation. There is zero chance your championship game will be neutral site.
And from a fan perspective, don't force a fair chunk of your fanbase to be stuck choosing between a CCG trip and a bowl trip.
