*** **** country has sucked for the past few years.
Outside of a very few artists, I'd put that number at between 20 and 40, and I tend to err on the high side. I place the approximate time of country's official demise to the release of this song...
You are right on the money with this.
I remember when this song hit. I was never a country fan but I remember this tune well. My family were country fans so that's how I became familiar with the song. This was an early predecessor of the late 80's early 90's country. Its came about 5 years before the rest really fully took over.
Today I much prefer classic country to the garbage I hear now. Once in a while I hear a good one but they are so rare now. I like Alabama and the old giants like Willie, Waylon, Hank (Jr and Sr) ect.
A lot of the modern heavier country just sounds like a HORRIBLY watered down, "pop" version of Lynyrd Skynyrd (with more twang) to my ears. Its very irritating and fake imo.
I always preferred Motown, blues, rock and metal though.
My grandfather liked Charlie Pride/George Jones style country music. My parents listened to Big Band music, so I was a little off for a child of the 70s. I used to like Glenn Campbell. But, when I went to college, I used to listen to AM radio going to and from school, and got to be a big Hank Williams (not the MNF one) Country and Western style fan.
I think it was around the time of that country musicians started doing covers of 60s and 70s rock songs. But, I will never get over the college road trip I took with a friend to celebrate his purchase of a car. One guy from Oregon, one from Chicago, one from Norway. We went to a horse track in Louisiana, but on the way back stopped at a college bar in SW Louisiana. They only served beer, but in the height of the cold war, the guy from Norway kept trying to order a White Russian from the bartender, and I was sure we'd soon be strung up by our shoelaces. But, my jaw really dropped when everyone started line dancing to a country rap song and I knew things had gone all to hell. We nearly got ran off the road in this little VW after we stopped at a rest stop and one of the guys shot off about what a crappy place Louisiana was. Having Texas plats in a neighboring state already puts a target on you but that was a special kind of stupid. We're lucky that the guy in the jacked up pickup truck just wanted to send a message.

Don't tell, but the guy who founded Motown Records was a _HUGE_ country music fan. He even tried to get a few country labels started separate from Motown Records.
Worst thing is though: If you ever learn about the lyrics of a lot of country songs that aren't the "Pop" variety, there's a lot of messages in there that people just miss. (and that goes for people on the right... I always found it HYSTERICAL that Hannity used Martina McBride's "Independence Day" as one of his theme songs for a while, considering what that one was about).
My favorite was always telling people : Go listen to the Dance again, and then watch the original video (you know the one with MLK in it?)

And the problem with that is?????
I don't mind it on occasion, a good fun summer song to drink to, maybe even a few every year aren't terrible. But country is capable of so much more.

Do you listen to Eric Church? That guy is amazing.
As is Zac Brown Band... and I only accept criticism of ZBB from people who know more than the songs put on the radio. Haha

Eric Church is solid. I saw ZBB in concert a few years ago, not my thing. They have a few catchy songs though, but I wouldn't call myself a huge fan. Tim McGraw has put out some OK stuff recently. I miss Brooks and Dunn.

Fun fact, but his son is RedFoo, of "Your happy and you know it fame". You know, LMAO.

I literally crash my car at high speed every time that song comes on the radio to make the noise stop. I pour battery acid into the CD tray when they play a snippet to promote a concert by that guy.
edit: oh, sorry, that's "Take me to church" by Hoser.

Wasn't uncommon. My grandma was a big country fan and her brother had a country group before he jumped into gospel. Music didn't really divide itself until later on.
To be honest, I like blue grass a lot more than country. If country artists knew how to play the damn bass guitar it would be attractive.
