RE: Syracuse self-imposes post-season ban
Meh. Other schools have self-imposed postseason bans, usually in football. The deal seems to be that you announce the self-imposed ban after you clinch a .500 or above season. Obviously it's the same kind of deal in football, a team bans itself when they're having a 6-6 or 7-5 season, not when they win 11.

Blame the bureaucrats in Indianapolis if you don't like it -- AFAIK they have accepted every instance of self-imposed penalties and reduced the NCAA imposed penalties accordingly.

I'm calling BS on this. Self-imposing a ban in a year where the NIT is the likely destination is no punishment at all. I have no idea what Syracuse is being accused of or if they are guilty, but if they are guilty of serious wrongdoing, I would hope the NCAA will impose a real punishment, although I have no faith in the NCAA to get it right though.

Very true. Jim Boeheim, though, he won't get any heat over this rather lame move. That man is protected by ESPN big time and he'll get a complete "free pass" on this one. Much like the "free pass" he got back in November 2011 after he publicly called Bernie Fine's accusers liars and frauds and opportunists.

It's still stunning that Boeheim got NO heat for that back in November 2011.

Umm they were liars and opportunists...precious coming from a Penn State fan.

Well, why did Boeheim --- 11 days afterwards mind you --- recant his statement about the guys being liars and opportunists?

Because there was some (though not that much) outcry about his statements. Because his initial statements were totally ridiculous and unfounded.

Since you're the one who wants to drag Penn State into this --- shouldn't one of the lessons we learned from Penn State be that "when it comes to people in powerful positions, neither ignoring the claims of potential victims of sex abuse, nor verbal intimidation of potential victims of sex abuse --- both those behaviors should NEVER be tolerated. NEVER"???

Yet, that's EXACTLY (the "verbal intimidation" part) what Boeheim did with his original statements. His original comments were a fireable offense, but nobody called Boeheim on the carpet for that.

Dude give it up...Cuse's situation evolved from the sordid, sick mess at Penn St. The claims were investigated prior and not pursued. ESPN only gave an audience to the liars and opportunists after being slow and one upped on the Paterno/Sandusky travesty.

Boeheim obviously recanted on the advice of the Lawyers...you may not like Boeheim but the guy says what is on his mind and defended his coach.

BTW, WTH does this have to do with the probation?

Give what up??? YOU are the one who inserted Penn State into this discussion, for whatever reason. PSU wasn't even part of this discussion, but I guess you just started drooling like a rabid dog when you saw my user name.

Anyway, back to the original point, Syracuse "penalizing" themselves in a year where they have a sub-par basketball team is completely lame --- and it's something Boeheim deserves to be ridiculed for.

But, he'll get a "free pass" from the sports media for this. As has happened prior in his career (I do notice how you failed to address the fact that Boeheim DID "verbally intimidate" the alleged victims at a time Boeheim had no idea their claims were not valid).

Anyway, those free passes are one benefit of coaching at a school which graduates a number of people in sports media.

Really? You brought up Bernie Fine in your first post...Once again Bernie Fine has nothing to do with the probation.

I don't have to defend Boeheim...this is awesome coming from a fan of a fan base of Joebots who turned a blind eye to the sordid mess in Happy Valley. PSU will be forever know as a school that hid child abuse to protect your precious wins.

RE: Syracuse self-imposes post-season ban
Syracuse was in the top half of the bubble at 15-7 and more than 5 winnable games left.

And forfeiting the ACC Tournament is huge -- I don't know if that's ever happened before. It's a decision that probably moves hundreds of thousands (if not millions) of dollars in athletic department donations across the ACC (assuming Syracuse's ticket allocation is redistributed to the other 14 teams).

I admit I don't know much about what prompted this self-penalty. But if it's anything short of massive institutional corruption on a UNC-CH or Penn State scale I'd hope this would be considered sufficiently penitent by the NCAA. Again, missing the ACC Tournament voluntarily is a big deal in every way.

Yup, there's a lot of money and exposure to be missed out on without the ACCT and NCAA/NIT.

Does anyone know if any team has ever voluntarily forfeited an ACC Tournament?

Smart move to do it now, but I do feel bad for Christmas. Until the NCAA stops allowing self-imposed bans midseason, seniors on these teams will be the ones screwed, instead of the schools.

Oh, and congrats to Coach Boeheim for now having twice the number of postseason bans as championships.

A few thoughts, some of which have already been expressed.

I agree to some extent with the cynicism of the OP. However, I think that Syracuse is still very smart to do this for a few reasons. They have been trying to settle on sanctions with the NCAA for a while now, but it appears that those discussions have fallen apart. Given where we are at in the season, absent this voluntary action, no sanctions would have been imposed this season. If SU ultimately gets a one or two year ban, given the state of the team this year, it is preferable to have this season be one of them. I have to think the NCAA (or an arbitrator) will give SU at least partial credit for the self imposed ban.

SU is currently 15-7, so they still have a chance to go to the NCAA's and obviously automatically go to the ACC Tourney. However, SU has a tough schedule down the stretch. If they waited until they are 16-10 to announce the voluntary ban, it really would be complete throwaway aside from the ACCs.

Second, if I understand the nature of the violations, they are traffic tickets next to what UNC is accused of. If the NCAA is pursuing a two year ban against SU, God only knows what they might have in mind for UNC.

Cool ...... I guess that because of the school I happened to attend, I can't have an opinion on ANY other school or coach.

Fair enough .... I'll leave this conversation now. Shoot, I should probably leave the board. I'm not exactly sure if I can participate in ANY conversations here.

Sure you can stay and debate...but you went down a slippery slope bringing Bernie Fine into it.

I give you credit for clearly stating you are a PSU fan...we have too many posters here who don't say who they are fans of...my pet peeve.

Considering that last year on February 4th, Syracuse was 22-0 and ranked #1 in the country, I think that comment is completely fair and non-cynical.

(never mind that that Syracuse team crapped out and finished the NCAA tournament by losing to a team that finished 5th in the Atlantic-10. But that's another story)

Seriously, for the 'Cuse fans: this was a SEVEN-year investigation. What the heck, beyond the Orange's record, changed over the last 365 days?

They had their hearing in front of the Committee on Infractions a couple of months ago. A ruling could be forthcoming and they want to head it off at the pass.

So UConn is banned from March Madness in 2013, Syracuse imposes it's own ban, but UNC is unscathed even after committing acts that were 100x worse?

There was plenty of negative posting towards Syracuse on the first page, where this all began, so it is amusing that you are trying to condense the situation.

I always believe what I write, unfortunately some folks like you always seem to have to resort to misrepresenting.

Take it easy, I'm still trying to grow the Big Ten board, I don't need them scared away.
