I'm calling BS on this. Self-imposing a ban in a year where the NIT is the likely destination is no punishment at all. I have no idea what Syracuse is being accused of or if they are guilty, but if they are guilty of serious wrongdoing, I would hope the NCAA will impose a real punishment, although I have no faith in the NCAA to get it right though.
NIT isn't a bad destination. But I think the ban includes that as well.

For a lot of schools, getting to the NIT is an achievement. For Syracuse, it's a failed season.
I feel bad for the current Syracuse players. They are being punished for actions that they had no part of. Syracuse may not be a tourney lock this year, but who knows what the team could have accomplished.
No NCAA, no NIT, No ACC Tourney
This investigation has dragged on and on...
The NCAA's taken so long to give out a punishment we made one ourselves.

Very true. Jim Boeheim, though, he won't get any heat over this rather lame move. That man is protected by ESPN big time and he'll get a complete "free pass" on this one. Much like the "free pass" he got back in November 2011 after he publicly called Bernie Fine's accusers liars and frauds and opportunists.

As others have said, lame move. This is obviously a going-nowhere year for Syracuse. Call me cynical, but if the Orange were 18-2 and ranked #5 right now, I seriously doubt they impose this "ban" for this year.
Now to pray that the NCAA feels that is enough, which is the ultimate motive for this move.

Considering that last year on February 4th, Syracuse was 22-0 and ranked #1 in the country, I think that comment is completely fair and non-cynical.
(never mind that that Syracuse team crapped out and finished the NCAA tournament by losing to a team that finished 5th in the Atlantic-10. But that's another story)
Seriously, for the 'Cuse fans: this was a SEVEN-year investigation. What the heck, beyond the Orange's record, changed over the last 365 days?
I applaud what Syracuse is doing. In this day and age of cynicism, it's refreshing to see a school stand on principle. I wouldn't be surprised to see a net benefit to the Orange after all is said and done.
Honesty and integrity. Class. They are willingly harming the program as recognition of some faults and errors they made. Some may snipe, but it appears that Syracuse will stand taller than before.

As I recall, Fine's accuser admitted he fabricated the whole story. Doesn't that make him a liar and a fraud, and make Boeheim exactly correct? Why should he "get heat" for that?

I'm no Cuse fan, but the whole thing was very questionable. I think Boeheim spoke too prematurely in accusing the accuser, but that woman seemed like a hot mess.

Because there was some (though not that much) outcry about his statements. Because his initial statements were totally ridiculous and unfounded.
