Yeah, I'd say they were "melodramatized" more than anything.
This was a great scene from Remember the Titans. Loved it when the Titans coach throws the coach of the other team a banana as they are meeting to shake hands after the game.

Exactly. While there are certainly individual cases of extreme racism in the south, my experience is that blacks and whites have gotten along pretty well here. The north is FAR more segregated (my experience living in both places). The best way I can describe it is being honest vs talking behind someone's back. They may not 'say' it (practice racism) as much in the north, but they 'do' it far more. In the south, it is 'said' far more than it is 'done'. Calling someone a name based on their ethnicity is bad... but it's also bad for the person who does it. Doing things 'under the table' are far less damaging to the perpetrator and just as damaging to the victim.

There is a lot more white racism in that area, especially in South Jersey, South Philly, and NE Philly, than there is down here. Minor edit to your comment so I can agree 100%.

Here is the deal and it is real simple- If it is proved that the team placed bananas and it was racially charged, the principal should cancel the rest of the season. Sportsmanship is about honoring the game.

That isn't the same. Tortillas at Mexicans isn't racist. It is something they make, but nothing inferior is implied. Bananas at blacks imply that they are inferior and not as far along the evolutionary track.

Really? Over a stupid freaking banana? What the hell is wrong with kids these days? Oversensitive damn kids. It's a banana, and they just kept grabbing them out. IF the story is even true. It's also up north where racism is supposed to be nonexistent.
I can't help but LMFAO at this story.
I've been hearing here for a while that racism itself is nonexistent throughout our whole country...hah
There is racism everywhere, and with everyone. Get real.
What was this a girl's powder puff team. Real football players don't get upset at crap like that.

It's a bit unreal, and I'm having doubts about the accuracy of this story.
People might remember the Jena 6 story. It was all over the media that Justin Barker hung a noose from the oak tree to keep the blacks away, but the REAL story is that he and his friends hung the noose as an intimidation aimed towards the rival school's rodeo competition coming up that weekend. No blacks were on either team.
It's disgusting how people mangle stories to flame racism and gain pity.

Yea, something odd here. If they were so upset, why not simply open the door and tell them to cut it out? They said there was no knob, so no knob on a door = no lock, correct? Unless there was a deadbolt, which I guess is possible, but hunph.
something not adding up. They put a banana there and these guys just keep taking them? No one says cut the bullschit or we're gonna stuff these bananas down your effing neck during this game? they didn't just shove them back through?
We would have kicked the effing door down if there was some crap like this going on when I was in HS.

Thanks for telling me how I should feel. It seems the ones that aren't of that particular race, ethnicity are the ones that tell us we shouldn't be offended. How stupid.
If you think inferiority is not implied then you're not too informed.
I also think traumatized is a hyperbole. I think the team would've been more angry than anything and the coach consoled them to help calm them down. I could be 100% wrong in my assumption too.
A few years ago something similar happened at a basketball game between Brentwood and Monessen in the Pittsburgh area. Some Brentwood students wore banana outfits and it outraged the Monessen fans. There really wasn't a brawl or anything but tensions were high leading up to their football matchup. Charlie Batch, formerly of the Steelers, helped squash those tensions.
