slycat, I appreciate your comments, but remember we tried to look at more than just the record. We went back and reviewed, each teams wins and losses last year and who they were against. Just as a point of reference I have listed a group of schools that all had the same record as ASU last year.

VA Tech 8-5
Iowa 8-5
Minnesota 8-6
Houston 8-5
Texas 8-5
Boise State 8-5
Georgia 8-5
Arizona 8-5

Respectfully, even though ASU had the same record, I am not sure I would rank many, if any of these teams below ASU. I also understand how frustrating that is, It is a perception that the media forces on the public (one of the reasons we started this blog).

I am not saying there are not human biases but last year ASU lost to Memphis, that was a bad loss and the loss to Western Kentucky did not help. Certainly these factors played a part in the overall evaluation for this year’s preseason ranking. Yes the overall projected wins for ASU this year is 9. Just as a reference for a comparison the Orlando Sentinel’s College Football Countdown has ASU playing 5 teams that all rank in the range of 100-126, at the very bottom of the 128 FBS teams. You also play 1 FCS opponent (typical for most FBS schools).

Tulane’s loss to USA last year was a bad loss and it did not help, but they had a good win against ECU. The Orlando Sentinel’s College Football Countdown has Tulane playing 1 team in the bottom (128-100) and 1 FCS opponent, again typical for most FBS schools.

The loss to UL Lafayette may be the best bench mark for comparison between the two schools. Tulane played UL Lafayette in the Mercedes-Benz Superdome, New Orleans, LA Dec 21 and Lost 24-21. ASU played the Ragin' Cajuns Oct 27 and lost 23-7.

I am not denying that many decisions were difficult in placing teams in the poll. We felt we had to start with last year’s results. We also looked at returning starters and the incoming recruiting class, ASU has 12 returning starters *87th nationally, Tulane has 13 returning starters *69th nationally. As for 247sport they rated the ASU new class (24 new recruits) - 114.25 - 3rd in the SBC and 95th nationally. Tulane's 20 new recruits rated 120.75 -10th in the AAC however 90th nationally.

I hope you can see how Tulane nudged ASU and ranked 1 place higher in our preseason poll.

We did the best we could with what we had to assist us in the evaluations.

I appreciate your observations. I am more than happy to try and explain how we came about the decisions and choices we made. I want people to ask questions. It is a way for us all to have a better understanding of what we are doing. I hope we will get insights into ways to market, brand and promote are teams by working together.

Thanks for your comments and concerns.

Respectfully and my best to you,

Oldtimer

Head to head matchups are not always the best way to measure teams against each other. The UL team that defeated Astate earlier in the season was clicking on with a healthy Terrance Broadway at QB. That team could have beaten Tulane by 21 points. Tulane played a Cajun squad that lost ULM and South Alabama down the stretch with an injured Broadway and played against a QB that had surgery on his broken arm less than 2 weeks before the game. He was very limited.

Let this guy be. He is obviously biased but somehow wants us to also agree with him or else he wouldn´t be here. I will say this, I would put the Cajuns or stAte up against any non P5 team and a lot of weak P5 teams without hesitation in 2014. So to say that their are 20ish G5 teams better than stAte is crazy.

In 2012 stAte had arguably the best team we have ever had, besides maybe the year before, yet we had a home loss against WKU. Things happen that way. In my probably biased opinion we had the better team that year, but some WKU fans might even agree. I doesn´t mean anything besides stAte lost one game. No further implications period. I doesn´t mean that WKU is 58 points better than MTSU because stAte beat MTSU by 45 points.

2013 stAte admittedly had a weaker team but I look for us to be back stonger than ever. I assume UNT who we haven´t lost to in 9 years will be ranked ahead of us also.

You want the best preseason ratings, wait til Vegas comes out with the spreads for opening week.

Branding the new Five Conference Top 25 Poll

We need your assistance!
Please Vote
This is a work in progress (the poll). Before we launch the new top 25 poll in August we are asking for your assistance. We are asking members of the boards from the Sun Belt, American, Mid American, Mountain West and Conference USA teams to assist us with the development of this new Poll. Recently we had a meeting with several media outlets in an attempt to have them pick up the poll for national exposure. The meeting was very fruitful and we came away with lots of suggestions and recommendations. The number one comment that surfaced was the name of the poll. Our goal is to brand the poll to achieve positive national attention and exposure. We met with several groups from school administrators, sports information professionals and marketing executives for recommendations.

After digesting the input from those meetings and a few other individuals, we humbly appeal to the loyal and dedicated fans that post on the boards for help. The cumulative collection of knowledge and wisdom that is shared from the five conferences has some of the most knowledgeable fans in the country and I hope everyone will take a moment to send us your opinion! After many hours of deliberation from board representatives, School administrators and a few media sources, we narrowed the selections down to nine.

Please take one moment to give us your choice and the one you feel will best represent the five conferences. * Survey ends Saturday June 10, 2014 - 9:00 pm.

We will post the survey on all five boards and the ODU Fan Forum. The results will be posted June 10, for a runoff. (The runoff will end June 14, 9:00 pm).

Thanks

Although he maybe a little biased at least he loves college football. I called it, he did put North Texas above both UL and stAte. Lol 10-2...projected finish. I will bet any amount up to $500 at 2-1 that NT doesn't win 10 games. I mean they have a tomato can schedule obviously being in CUSA but still.

Thanks runninjoe, I have to admit the poll that is being posted on the blog NOW, was originally voted on by five people, myself four CUSA members and an ECU fan, three were from ODU and another poster. This goes back eight weeks ago, The blog has Metamorphisized into something we did not intend or expect.

We now have over 100 people planning to take part in the NEW weekly poll to début in August and have pollsters from all five conferences from across the country. We have over 300 hits a day that view the blog and currently have many different aspects other than just the ODU blog. We are looking at options of breaking the poll off to a separate blog and revamp just to better serve the five Conference (SBC, AAC, MWC, MAC and CUSA). I do appreciate everyone’s participation from the Sun Belt and would like to invite others to become a part.

As I have said to others we will never disclose any participants or voters information on the blog or any board(s). We currently are preparing for a feature that will give information about the potential finish of SBC teams. If you have not taken part in the survey please take a moment to do so, it is fast and easy. below is a link.

I enjoy the posts. One annoying gripe I have is that you predict the season W/L but its not consistant. For instance, you have Idaho beating NMSU but also have NMSU beating Idaho. Is each prediction seperate from each other and "best case season" or should they match all the way through?

slycat, I understand where you are coming from and appreciate your comment. I must have made an error, there are two others that have assisted us with the countdown and I must have overlooked it before I clicked - publish. Thanks for catching it, I will try and fix.

What we attempted to do was take the votes that were cast by the members of the SBC board, which clearly and decisively had ranked the teams from 1-11. What I did was keep that prediction paramount and tried to correlate what might be an overall win/loss record for teams they play this year. We looked at the head to head match ups from the past and predicted the wins and losses the best we could from the overall predicted order, selected by SBC members. We looked at home games and the historical advantages from years past, (last year’s results) and tried to account for experience from returning players and the potential impact from new players. It was totally arbitrary and may or may not be the end results. I put my neck on the chopping block a little. I enjoy the discussion and especially like to hear others opinions why they support differing views. Remember, it is all for entertainment, enjoyment and to stimulate a debate from your members why they may support a contrary view.

I hope that everyone enjoys our efforts and will continue to support our desire to elevate all five conferences. We feel the media has a bias to ignore all of us unjustly.

In the near future we will spin off to a separate blog for more detailed group of five discussions and hope to link all together for promotion and recognition of the new top 25 poll.

If any SBC members would like to make suggestions or contribute, please accept our open invitation to join us or help out.

Respectfully,

Oldtimer

PS. Those that have plans to vote on the new poll, we will open up registration next week and remind those already planning to be pollsters (we need a lot more from the SBC, currently about 18-20).

For instance, you have Idaho beating NMSU but also have NMSU beating Idaho. Is each prediction seperate from each other and "best case season" or should they match all the way through?

I fixed the error, ouch..... Good Luck to the Vandals.

I am sure there will be other mistakes, just give me a heads up and we will do what we can to fix.

Thanks,

Oldtimer
