Three players leave football program
http://hamptonroads.com/2014/05/three-pl...tball-team

Quote:Three players have left the Old Dominion football team, including highly-rated junior college wide receiver Jusse Yorke. But one of the Monarchs’ top wide receivers is back on the depth chart.

Yorke and safety Daquin Moore from Hampton High School were dismissed for violating team rules, coach Bobby Wilder said Friday morning. Defensive tackle Dominique Guinn-Bailey, a rising senior from Portsmouth, has asked for his release to transfer elsewhere.

Guinn-Bailey asking to leave due to playing time?

That's what I would guess. He probably wanted to get back on the field, reclaim his position and has been held out.

I was excited about Yorke, but I can't really miss what we never had.

Tough kids from tough neighborhoods playing a tough game. I guess a little shrinkage is inevitable. This is how you retain control of a program. Let people know you are serious about violations.

Seems that way, especially since he was hurt and didn't participate in spring practice. Yorke and Moore were both from the same highschool. I imagine they were buds and did something stupid together. It sucks, because Yorke was a 3 star recruit and one of our first, but we'll have plenty more in the future. I am glad that it seems Blair Roberts will be able to come back and start.

Obviously we don't know, but that was also what I deduced from the article.

As to Moore and Yorke, you have to admit that Wilder is consistent. If they break the rules, they are going to pay a price.

Well, yeah I wasn't asking as if we knew just posing the assumed question. I deduced the same thing.

Honestly, ODU has tremendous depth at WR (especially with the incoming freshmen) and DL. Byrum would have probably taken Moore's minutes anyways. I doubt this will impact the team.

I hope Wilder and staff use these open scholarships in 2015 to beef up the OL.

Agreed. I continue to be impressed with the Coach Wilder and the program.

RE: Three players leave football program
My wife and I just happened to be sitting next to the parents of a 2015 recruit last fall, they had driven down from NJ. The parents admitted they knew nothing about the ODU program. They knew Lawry and knew he was excited about coming and contacted the coaches about coming to see the place. Mom and dad liked it very much, but literally wanted to know how long we'd had football, etc. My wife filled them in and mentioned that BW doesn't fool around, that the first scholarship player we ever signed was dismissed from the team. You could see the parents' eyes light up. "Well I hope they offer my son," the dad finally said. "That's the type of place I want him to go to." I don't know the guy's name, don't know if we've offered, the son and his buddy were wandering around the stadium so we didn't see him. But the parents were blown away that our coaches would actually do that.

This is getting to be a common theme. How many players have we dismissed over the past couple of years? I'm not blaming it all on one person but there is an evident problem with supervising these kids. This is happening far too often.

Yeah, it's pretty amazing that no other schools dismiss players from teams. I can't stand that only ODU has this problem.

This isn't exclusive to ODU, even though it feels that way because we're wrapped in a bubble. ODU does it frequently because they hold their kids to a high standard and prioritize character over performance, which I'm sure is lacking at some power conference schools.

It's the difference between a Florida State & ODU. A coach who has morals & one that will win at any price.

This stuff happens at every school. Heck, W&M had a player dealing drugs. We are only aware of it because Wilder does the right thing and dismisses the kid. FSU's nickname is the Crimenoles for a reason.

Tyree Lee, Reid Evans, Larry Alston, Caleb Taylor, Jusse Yourke, Daquin Moore and several that I don't even need to continue to look up.

It's not a player here or there. This is really getting to be more than a "common occurrence."

Your attempt at mockery was quite the try though...

It's also done to protect the other 90+ players who are doing things right. You let one corruptible apple hang around too long, and you jeopardize the other good young men who wouldn't otherwise be looking for trouble. You cycle out the trash, with no apologies!

you have struck a main nerve. kids get caught breaking rules they know will result in penalties that may include dismissal from the team, and a question of who is to blame is brought up. if the punishment for the crime is delivered unfairly, i got a problem with it. if one player is penalized for an infraction differently than another, i got a problem with it. you can go so far as to argue if the regulations are "too tough or strick" for the kids. figure thats up to the kids and parents to decide before joining the team. blame is on no one but the player, that either did not believe the rules would be upheld or apply, or was easily swayed and did not think they would be caught.
