I see why he really didn't want to come out in the first place.

I believe he wanted to, it brought him attention. There are far too many steps he could have taken to dance away from the question, "Is your girlfriend going to be at your games?"

But why jump through those hoops? Why play dumb cat-and-mouse games with the media, and then give them a "gotcha" moment when he's found out to be gay AND and a liar?

And how's he going to keep a lid on it when his whole damn college team knew?

All he did was diffuse a ticking bomb, and I don't blame him a bit.

He'll land somewhere (or not) according to his abilities.

And if he flames out (no pun intended) like a helluva lot of rookies do, there will be crybabies saying it was because he was gay, and they'll be wrong.

Well how about, it's nobodys business? When asked, "I don't find it necessary to discuss my personal life, but let's DO talk football." That's how it should be whether you're gay or not. Either the NFL used him as bait to get attention or he did it to himself, one or the other. If this was 10 years ago, nobody is even thinking about whether he's gay or not. ESPN was actually interested in discussing football to football players.

Because he'd be badgered about it mercilessly by that same media. Try being a public figure and telling a reporter "it's none of your business" and see what happens.

TMZ makes its living off that crap.

"I don't find it necessary to discuss my personal life, this is about football. We can discuss my personal life some other time, I just want to focus on the draft and my draft stock and do the best I can. What's your next question?"

TMZ is equivilent to a 15 year old High School drama queen. I don't know how anyone above the age of 17 would even watch that crap shoot.

Lawyers are already lining up to represent Sam if he isn't at least a first round choice. They will scream discrimination and the Obama regime will agree. Holder will offer the whole justice department to help with the lawsuit. Obama will threaten to shut down the NFL.

Ding! Ding! Ding!

He essentially ensured that he'd be a Top 3 round pick with this. Not a chance in hell that there aren't a few teams who are willing to reach for him for the publicity he'll generate and the goodwill the franchise will get for being "progressive."

It'll start to look very bad for the NFL if he's not drafted by the fourth round. I wouldn't be surprised if Goddell strong arms or bribes a team into drafting him.

You don't have to be a smartass. He could have easily said that his personal life could have been discussed when he was ready. Who the hell goes on national television for a discussion about professional football and discuss their personal life instead? They made a mountain out of a mole hill.

Really?

I think the kid knew damn well this would happen and made a calculated move to diffuse it. Get all the wailing about it out of the way before he sets foot on a field.

Won't happen of course, because it'll be a circus wherever he lands, but I'm just not sure he had any better options.

Waiting until the draft was over, at least, would have put all talks away about him doing it simply for stock. I understand what you're saying but I I think this could have been put off. How long did Obama scoff at America for wanting to see his BC? Four years and some?

I think he did it to avoid the situation he would have faced if it was discovered and revealed in some startling fashion.

The sad thing is, damned if you do, pro gay groups drag you over the coals to squeeze every last drop of political value out of you, and damned if you don't, imagine the ESPN exposure and the running tabloids.

He definitely should have put this thing off. At least if he waited, he would have the support of guys in the locker room that knew him and befriended him. But, if I am a guy in that locker room getting questions about this dude being gay everyday and I don't know him (maybe don't like him), I really could do without him on my team.

You really don't think it would have come up before the draft, as much as teams try to get into a kid's head before the draft?

And Obama's birth certificate is immaterial to this conversation.

That's exactly what Jonathan Vilma was saying about him... What if we're all in the showers and you know he likes other dudes and you catch him accidentally looking down at you, you're GONNA get pissed.

Vilma nailed it just right.

Obama is a public figure who kept delaying one certain question, it's not immaterial to this. He dealt with the pressure just fine by scoffing, Sam could have done the same.

If you are a suspected gay NFL player, in this feeding frenzy media environment, do you really believe that would be the end of it?

He definitely should have put this thing off. At least if he waited, he would have the support of guys in the locker room that knew him and befriended him. But, if I am a guy in that locker room getting questions about this dude being gay everyday and I don't know him (maybe don't like him), I really could do without him on my team.

That's exactly what Jonathan Vilma was saying about him... What if we're all in the showers and you know he likes other dudes and you catch him accidentally looking down at you, you're GONNA get pissed.

Vilma nailed it just right.

Mizzou seemed to find a way to make it work. 18-21 year old kids. I would hope professionals could manage.

You really don't think it would have come up before the draft, as much as teams try to get into a kid's head before the draft?

And Obama's birth certificate is immaterial to this conversation.

Obama is a public figure who kept delaying one certain question, it's not immaterial to this. He dealt with the pressure just fine by scoffing, Sam could have done the same.

It's a straw man argument that doesn't have a damn thing to do with the price of eggs in China.

Good point, and nobody besides THEM knew he was gay, am I right?
