RE: OT: CUSA board Music thread (what are you listening to right now?)
It is all about enjoying the music and expanding your horizons. If you are young and listen to Metal you might want to go back and listen to some of the older stuff. Granted it is usually a lot tamer than what is out there today but then again, you might be surprised by what you find. Musicians have found inspiration for many of their songs in older music. Remakes of the older songs have always been a delight for me as I can listen to something I am well acquainted with yet hear it in a new form even though I may have been burnt out on the old song. For the older folks, listening to the newer music just might grow on you and open your eyes to a whole new genre or style. In my case, I just want to be 18 Till I Die!

I believe this version of the old Beatles song Help is truer to the lyrics than the original and I find it much more interesting than the "pop" version. There is so much more feeling in this version. I had not thought about the lyrics until I heard this version and the desperation that the lyrics suggest just smacks you in the face with Howie's version.
Help - Howie Day

To your point though, I tend to find myself less into new bands and going back to the past old bands I didn't get into but knew about back in the day.

Cornershop
"Brimful of Asha"
LP: When I Was Born for the 7th Time
1997
The band name originated from a stereotype referring to British Asians often owning corner shops. Their music is a fusion of Indian music, Britpop, and electronic dance music. This song is based upon the history of film culture in India. Since their introduction, Indian films have relied heavily on song-and-dance numbers. Almost always, the singing was performed by background singers while the actors and actresses lip-sync. Asha Bhosle is one of these playback singers who has sung over 12,000 songs. Playback singers Lata Mangeshkar (her older sibling) and Mohammad Rafi (one of the top male playback singers of the mid-century) are also mentioned in the song. The lyrics of the song's bridge contain a number of references to non-Indian music, including Georges Brassens' song "Les Amoureux des bancs publics", Jacques Dutronc, Marc Bolan, Argo Records and Trojan Records.
