1. JD Weatherspoon, just halfway through his first season... there is no debate. His thunderous two handed lighting bolts should come with a warning.
2. Harvey Knuckles, 6'6, alley oops brought crowds to their feet in late 70's.
3. Ty Kent , 6'5, the ulta talented high flyer was a true wing player... oh the sacrifice he made... had some nice flushes as a frosh in MAC Champ game... Akron?
4. Craig Thames, at 5'10, unbelievable how he gathered off two feet and flushed, probably could sky like JD but much shorter.
5. Craig Sutters, 6'6, dunk machine, off two feet and could dunk in a crowd like JD.
6. Greg Stempin, 6'8, tremendous aggressive dunker off one foot. We beat OSU at home and the Buckeyes stood and watched his tomahawk masterpiece, Cochise couldn't have done it better.
HON. Mention- 6'10 Casey Shaw, If he would have stayed 6'10 Alan Pinson, P.S. I never saw Steve Mix play

Don't believe Mix ever dunked in a game.....but then again, neither did Kareem Abdul Jabbar (also known as Lew Alcindor) - and he was 7'2" and a future NBA HOF'er and all-time leading scorer. Those guys must have had no hops at all....

Dunking drew a technical foul for a number of years in college and high school.

I know - it was because of Alcindor that it was banned. They claimed it was for safety reasons, but no one wanted the prospect of Alcindor dunking at will throughout college. Helped his overall game though.

There's a photo of Mix, frequently used in publicity stuff, of Mix dunking against, IIRC, W Kentucky. Dunking wasn't a big deal back then. Don't recall Kirsch as much of anything. Not sure he ever even started. Bob Nichols always said German was a great dunker but never did in a game. Miller literally rocked the whole stanchion with his dunks. Not a great leaper but one of the strongest Rockets ever. Aaron Hopkins was much less known for his hoops skills than for his NCAA winning triple jump skills but was probably the highest flier of all, once missing a couple games after injuring his elbow on the rim going for a rebound. He was 6'1". Another guy was a skinny little guard who came in with Sam Brown. He could easily dunk from flat-footed under the hoop. I'll have to look him up. I think he played under Gipson. About 6' tall, 160.

We stationed a student manager outside the refs dressing room during warmups. He'd run down and alert us so all dunks stopped when they left to come in the gym. You got Ts for every dunk in warmups as well.

Hess might have been one of the best at UT had the NCAA not banned it at the time.

Archie Fuller. Was Sam Brown's JUCO teammate who together with Brown gave UT a decent backcourt that season for Gipson. What do I win?

Ricardo Thomas was a 6-7 PF who threw down some serious dunks while here...

Scoop Williams had a few rim rattlers in the day. Also don't remember Milo doing much. In team photo he looked like an athletic freak, but not much production. Who was the kid we had during Cross's years who had poster dunk vs BG, that kid could leap?

I think the poster dunk vs. BG may have been by Ty Kent. He definitely belongs on the list. Probably would've seen more from him had he not had to play point guard his senior year.

Not an all-time great dunker, but this was a great dunk by itself.

Most amazing thing about that clip is that a Toledo team from those years actually held a 20-point lead in a game.

Craig Sutter had the most dunks that I can remember for UT in a season. Isn't he the guy where somebody in the pep band started a count of the number of dunks he had?

As for Doug Hess - the one visual memory I have of him was when he fouled someone and gave a quick raise of the hand that the ref did not see. He started to line up along the foul line for the shot, then another player wanted to change sides with him. At the same time the ref asked him to raise his hand for the foul - so Hess shot his arm up as he was changing sides - and got his hand caught in the net. I'm not sure he would have had a lot of dunks - but he didn't have to jump much to get one.

I also think Kozelko would have had quite a few. Pretty athletic guy at 6'8 or 6'10 - can't remember which. Mix's college career was the same time as Alcindor's - so he could not legally dunk in a game - but he was there when someone named Spencer Haywood dunked in the old Field House in warm-ups.... Which also marked the last game of that guy's college career.

One of my all- time faves. And I can't believe I left Kent off. The down-the-lane, straddle BG guy stuff his freshman year was legendary. Amos had some great ones but usually on breakaways. That was probably the best recruiting class we had until this year and it was wasted. Wonder what Coach K could have done with them? I LOVED Ty Kent.

My eternal respect. I recall him in a scrum under the hoop on a missed jumper. He just went straight up, grabbed the board and jammed over about four taller guys.

Hall of Shame dunk goes to Chad Keller, 6'6" forward who clanged a breakaway dunk against Coppin State with Toledo leading by about 15 with 8 or 10 left. Instead of being a coffin nail, the ball flew to half court into the hands of a Coppin player who scored and they tore us a new one the rest of the way, winning by double figures, IIRC.

On the topic of individual dunks, I recall Stan having a very satisfying slam (more for the context than the dunk itself) towards the end of the tiebreaker game vs. CMU at Crisler Arena in '79. Probably my favorite men's basketball win of all time.
