Forgot about Amos, lots of dunks, but nothing in traffic, all his were breakaway, steal, fast break-like dunks. Yes, Ty Kent. what a talent wasted by the clown we had for a coach. To add to the hall of shame, I think I remember Rick Rightenauer (sp?) getting stuffed by the rim on a wide open breakaway. Who was tall, center on those early Gibson Teams, JC Harris?? All time favorite dunk, hands down Stempin vs O$U.

Stempin is third on my All-Time Rocket Freshman Dunk list with an offensive rebound slamat CMU. I'll give Kent first and Salter second. By the way, my favorite Stempin play was his block of Kenhy Satterfield to seal a Rocket win against Cinci.

As for Doug Hess - the one visual memory I have of him was when he fouled someone and gave a quick raise of the hand that the ref did not see. He started to line up along the foul line for the shot, then another player wanted to change sides with him. At the same time the ref asked him to raise his hand for the foul - so Hess shot his arm up as he was changing sides - and got his hand caught in the net. I'm not sure he would have had a lot of dunks - but he didn't have to jump much to get one.

I also think Kozelko would have had quite a few. Pretty athletic guy at 6'8 or 6'10 - can't remember which. Mix's college career was the same time as Alcindor's - so he could not legally dunk in a game - but he was there when someone named Spencer Haywood dunked in the old Field House in warm-ups.... Which also marked the last game of that guy's college career.

Hmm, you're right about Mix but I swear I 've seen that picture of him dunking. Maybe he drew a T or maybe it was in a freshman game, since he started in 1966 and dunks were outlawed in 67. Research time.

You're right, that probably was the only play Ian Salter ever made. Did he even play 4 years? After Casey Shaw, we had a string of meathead centers who would flake out on us. Salter, Pinson, Kid from Oregon, I know there are more.

Pinson had a serious medical condition that affected his play. I think he would have made people forget Casey Shaw if he remained healthy. Amazing skills when he was going well. Salter wasn't a flake, he just wasn't that good. He was a casualty of K's housecleaning and played for a small school in Texas.

Who was the other center only a few years ago who was a finalist for Mr. Missouri, or Iowa, or something and he left us and went to play for a really small school back home. Another center bust.

I remember there being a lot of dunks from Sutter as well. I believe he lived in Carter East when I lived in Carter West. I remember him driving around campus in his Jeep.

With the recent turnover, horrible recruiting and cleaning house, I can remember the players and teams from 20 years ago better than the last 4-6 yrs.

RE: Top High Flying Dunkers, Leapers UT
sutters has to be up there. he had a reputation before he took the court. didn't become eligible until the 2nd semester and his first game the place was packed. he had a huge weatherspoon like half court alley oop. a tip dunk and a fast break one off the dish where his body was nearly parallel to the ground when he threw it down. after that teams saw the scout and sutters evolved into more of a low post battler. led an underdog rocket team under jay eck to the mac champ game and a 1 point loss to emu.

i'd say weatherspoon is unparallelled, in half a season he probably has more highlight reel dunks than any rocket in history
craig thames would be #2 because he dunked so often at 5-10 and his dunks were part of him being a great player.
stempin see thames, in that his dunking was a strength and helped him become more of a dominant player.
shaw was a great dunker early in his career, grew into more of a muscle man and became a reborn christian who didn't dunk as much later in his career-i know, that's bigoted, but it seems to have corrallated.
milo kirrsch-not, he was a mediocre player who threw down the occasional monster dunk but didn't impact games enough to really matter
harvey-yes
miller-yes-both were memorable players who had nice dunks.
archie fuller had hops, not a lot of dunks tho
amos was probably top 2 in # of career dunks. strong finisher and i give him credit cuz most of his dunks came off steals he made or hustle plays he created. would have been a good fit for this years team. his career had the misfortune of culminating in the joplin break up yr and the graphically disappointing hiss cross first yr

is there anyone in the country that gets up to 11 1/2 feet quicker than spoon?

The reason I remember Fuller's tip dunk was that it was so unexpected. Can't recall another dunk he had. I look forward to seeing Holmes from BG. Sounds like a slightly more polished Weatherspoon, although J D is starting to really look like a player instead of an athlete. Not sure which one has better hops. Holmes is taller and blocks a lot of shots.

RE: Top High Flying Dunkers, Leapers UT
So after a number of responses, I'd re-rank the list like this.

1. Weatherspoon - Explosion personified. Who gets off the floor quicker? His dunk totals in half a season rival total dunks by any of Stan's teams in his tenure.
2. Miller - Never saw play but will take it from the old timers that he was a beast and I like the comment that he shook the whole basket contraption
3. Sutter - Another rocket before my time, but it sounds like the volume of dunks was prolific, and I bet there were a few that were game changing.
4. Thames - Spud Web level dunks that were unbelievable for someone under 6 ft. Happy to have witnesses many of them.
5. Amos - Large volume of dunks and many were hustle plays, great smile after each one.
6. Stempin - overall great gamer and he had a certain physicality to the way he threw down, always a crowd pleaser.Anyone who dunks like that on O$U makes my list.

Honorable mention.
7. Ty Kent, Limited by horrible coaching and forced to play point guard. Lots of unrealized dunking potential, but a few memorable posterizing dunks.
8. Ricardo Thomas, had hops on OK teams.
9. Casey Shaw, muscled up in his time at UT and was an opportunity dunker, but not prolific.
10. Archie Fuller, another with unrealized potential, but could get off the floor.
11. Harvey Knuckles, Never saw him play, but any UT list would not be complet without Harvey.

Amos deserves to be on the list just for that Cheshire cat smile!

How could I forget TY KENT, yes and Archie Fuller was a good dunker. Scoop was way overrated, think he played with a bullet in his leg... never leaped like he did at Scott. Milo didn't dunk a lot but he could absolutely sky... he is ranked way too high after some thought. Kenny Epperson the all time underrated player in UT history was a dunker. Stan had the dunk we all screamed for!

"This one guy told me when I first got on campus that, 'If you dunk in your first game, the fans will love you forever.' It just so happened that I got in the last few minutes of my first game and got a dunk, and the fans really went wild. I would like to think it was for more than one dunk, but he was right. I think it was also because I was so skinny they felt sorry for me. When you are a [fan] favorite, it inspires you to jump a little higher and you can do some things that normally you could not have." - Harvey Knuckles

good list. i'd go 2) thames 3)sutters 4)stempin 5)amos 6) harvey 7)shaw 8)miller 9) kent - i think ricardo thomas is a reach.

also, he wasn't a prolific dunker but skinny barry sonnenberg had a couple memorable dunks. barry was long -think a white justin anyijong- and a track and field guy who could sky with a running start. every once in a while he'd get a lane where he had a chance to get his feet and timing right and throw it down.

RE: Top High Flying Dunkers, Leapers UT
My favorite memory of Ty Kent was the MAC Tourney semi finals, Toledo was playing Kest State(#1 seed I believe). Kent robbed their PG blind and had the ball all alone toward the Rocket Hoop. He threw down a thunderous slam and gave the crowd a look that I will never forget. That dunk was the final nails in the coffin as Toledo moved on the the MAC Tourney finals. That team was loaded with talent, I think Ty Kent was a freshman. Best "statement" dunk that I can remember.
