I tend to agree. Karlgaard will run in trouble if he has a different standard for Bragga (3 years of underperformance) than he has for Bloomgren (4 years of underperformance with no sign of improvement). He needs to be consistent...and as others have pointed out, given the recruiting situation and with one year remaining on Bloom's contract, he really has only two choices-- fire him now or give him a contract extension.
Looks like he’s back, now what? The AD has to go if Bloom wins less than 7 games next year.
Hard to get to seven wins with three blowout losses in the first four games. Hopefully we match up well with McNeese and get a W.

McNeese

@#16 Houston

So?

Are we already setting up the, "Losing is okay as long as you have a good enough excuse," argument?

Already in place as witnessed by the evidence today of "improvement". We lost by slightly less than before in the worst conference in the country.

Next year is easy for this: Murderers row of non-conference plus a conference schedule that includes 5 bowl teams and both championship game participants. 4-8 and crossing midfield twice against UTSA will be progress!!
FBS record and win fraction under Bloomgren ...

2018 - 1-10 - 0.100
2019 - 3-9 - 0.250
2020 - 2-3 - 0.400
2021 - 3-8 - 0.273
Total - 9-41 - 0.180

Again, how is this "tangible progress"? Only at Rice.
Somebody suggested an incentives contract.

How about this:

One year extension after 6 wins
one more year for each win after that up to 10.

This just delays the inevitable. He's a sorry head coach. It's like giving a runner incentives to keep running faster in a 5K when he's (she's) already trained to the max. You might get marginal improvements, but that's about it. If 4 seasons doesn't prove the point, dragging it out for 2-3 more won't lead to a different result - it will waste years to begin the certain rebuild.
And the portal surge has officially started-- Montero is the first to enter...

Agree. He's not a head coach. He already has more than enough incentive to do his job. He can't.

They’ll say we’re graduating players and it’s a sign of success. Guys like this would be staying if they thought we would be any good next year, it’s not like he’s playing for his shot at the NFL.
Who can blame him? Half of next year's roster will be new faces.
When does the fire JK thread start??? There's the problem
How many of the 15 Junior and Redshirt Juniors do people will go portal?

Interestingly, many of the players listed as 'junior' in the roster are already in their fourth academic year (i.e. ready to graduate), most likely because of the one year Covid eligibility freebie.

My guess is that most of the 'juniors' who graduate will bolt, either to new jobs or to their one extra year as a grad somewhere else.

If there is a tsunami, expect plenty of "these young men have completed their degrees, and it would be selfish on our part to ask them to defer moving on with their lives. We wish them well in their future endeavors, and at the same time, we expect that many other universities will be facing similar issues. Rice's situation will not be unusual, and we feel that the continuity of our present staff will ease the loss of these fine young men."
Step one, hire a coach that players who have played 3-4 years for him WANT to stay and play another year.
Step two, extend that to include ability to make HS seniors WANT to come here and play.

Recruiting and retention, it's all about those things, just like in the real world.

Rice LB Desmyn Baker has entered the transfer portal. He had 43 tackles and 3.5 TFLs this year and emerged as a starter in the second half of the season.
Rice Football with Bloomgren (against FBS opponents in regulation):

Offensive Failure

Rice scores >30
2018 - 0/12
2019 - 1/12 (31 points against MTSU)
2020 - 1/5 (34 points against MTSU)
2021 - 1/11 (35 points against LaTech)
Total - 3/40 (7.5%)

Rice scores <10
2018 - 2/12
2019 - 3/12
2020 - 0/5
2021 - 3/11
Total - 8/40 (20%)

Defensive Failure

Rice allows >30
2018 - 9/12
2019 - 4/12
2020 - 1/5
2021 - 7/11
Total - 21/40 (52.5%)

Rice allows <10
2018 - 0/12
2019 - 0/12
2020 - 2/5
2021 - 0/11
Total - 2/40 (5%)

So in Bloomgren's 40 games against FBS opponents, Rice has scored more than 30 points on 3 occasions, but allowed more than 30 points on 21 occasions. 2021 was not any better or worse than his career numbers. I really want to hear the explanation for brining him back for a 5th season, because to me it looks indefensible.
To Big's numbers, I'll add that our offensive-minded head coach was at the stern for all 3 of the shutouts we've suffered in the past 20 years: 2018 UAB, 2021 Texas and UTSA.
There's no way to make this coach look good. It's indefensible. I'm finished with Rice football. I hope Karlgaard and Bloomgren get everything they deserve next season...hell.

Indefensible. There is no rationale that holds up. You've already heard their best argument- 4 wins is the most since 2015. Tangilble progress.

Like many of you, I was a diehard for many years. I follow Big 12 and SEC teams much more than Rice now, and couldn't come up with a reason to make a game this year, though I did watch several online. Rice Administration- WAKE UP!! Your most ardent supporters are leaving or have left- and based on the student attendance you are not growing any new ones.

If it's the buyout- please reach out to some donors, we can take care of it.

I really think the problem is that "They" really and truely just don't care. Did anybody see JK or Leebron at the LT game with the whopping 2k attendance, if that? Oops I meant 15k. The Texans announced 65k in the pressbox Sunday and i understand the entire pressbox laughed. It was maybe 30, and I think closer to 25k.
Reginald DesRoches was at the Texans game Sunday, and tweeted out congrats to Austin Walter on scoring his touchdown (and reposting a clip of his press conference afterwards).

DesRoches is a Jets fan, I am pretty sure.
