Freshman Miya Crump (6-1 forward) from Lamar - the Southland Conference Freshman of the Year - is transferring. She's from Yates and wants to transfer back to the city of Houston somewhere to be closer to her family due to a family illness. She averaged 14 1/2 points and like 5 rebounds a game.

Would probably be eligible for a hardship waiver, right? MBB transfers who do so for ailing family members typically become eligible immediately.

Possibly. The story in the Beaumont paper said her grandfather has lung cancer. UH is certainly a possibility for her too (or TSU). They just picked up a transfer from FIU (from Crosby) who started for them as a freshman, but didn't have nearly the stats that the Lamar player did.

Don't see any of the Rice coaches following her on Twitter, so hard to tell if there's mutual interest. Also never know whether somebody would qualify academically. But she's 6-1 and shot 35% from 3 last year, so she'd be a pretty natural replacement for Iademarco.

Be nice if Coach Langley could get one or two players on academic scholarships for more depth.

Not possible and probably not necessary.

what would be the ramifications of taking academic aid, vs the PWO approach?

I think PWO has to pay her own way.

We had plenty of depth this season. As long as your top players don't get hurt, you don't need depth in women's basketball. Just look at the Final Four - none of those teams played more than 6 or 7 players in their key games. You only need depth if you have injuries, or if you want to empty your bench in blowouts (which should happen more frequently next year). Both men's and women's basketball these days are going to smaller and smaller benches.

You need depth in football. And I'd argue baseball too is going that direction with the need for more specialty bullpen arms, righty/lefty hitting combinations, and just more overall injuries occurring in that sport nowadays.

esp in MBB, w all the transfers, depth is a problem. Maybe w the women, more will be interested in the education, and the college experience, and we can just have continue the ramp up to higher quality players ?

She's already said she's going to UH (which isn't a surprise). I really hope we play UH next year in non-conference play.

Tayler Bennett is leaving Rice as a graduate transfer. That's not surprising to me - she ended up missing the last half of the season with an undisclosed injury and she wouldn't have received any playing time next year. Congrats to her on graduating in three years, and good luck to her wherever she ends up next year.

My speculation at this point is we use the extra scholarship with a regular transfer who sits out next season. I don't know that for sure but it seems like it would be a good time to have someone sitting out a season who can play in 2020-21.

Name to possibly watch next year is 2020 PG Harmoni Turner. 4-star guard ranked in the top-100 who is absolutely lightning quick. There's a good chance some of the preeminent WBB schools are looking at her, so I don't know how realistic a target she is, but I imagine the logical next step in building the program is trying to steal some of the premier in-state talent (like we did with Jasmine Smith).

Angela Harris is going to be a graduate transfer for UH. She's another Cypress gal (Cy Fair) so I'm sure she knows Rice's various Cypress kids. She's a 1000-point scorer in three years for the Coogs, and obviously is a smart kid (graduating in three years) so that might be a solid person to go after.

Would be a good addition. Mark Berman's tweet makes it sound like A) Houston's coach isn't too happy and B) She might have some injury problems. Considerable drop in her numbers this year from last, but would still be some much needed depth.

Schwartz's teammate committed to Oregon, so that's not happening.

Another 2020 name to watch: Zayla Tinner. Posted an edit of her offer list with Rice included. Other schools include Texas Tech, Butler, Georgetown, Ole Miss, Kansas, Houston, TCU, and others. Looks like a 5-10 wing.

6-7 Texas freshman Sedona Prince is transferring. She was ranked #8 in her class but suffered a gruesome leg fracture playing for Team USA and missed all of last year. She chose Texas over schools like Oregon, UConn, etc., so she'll probably have a ton of suitors, but you never know after an injury. I imagine there's also a possibility she could play right away, but I'm really not sure how the NCAA waiver system operates.
