So you're saying there's a chance?
My initial reaction on Stephenson is it seems like he's been in the farm system forever. He was drafted in 2011 and he is still 24 years old. But, he was a #1 draft pick and the window is closing for him to be an effective, consistent major league pitcher IMO.

As a comparison, Homer Bailey was drafted #1 in 2004 and began pitching for the Reds during the 2007 season.

I get what you are saying about Stephenson, but I think your Bailey comparison is misleading. Yes Bailey reached the majors in 2007, but he only made 9 starts and pitched 45 innings. In 2008, he pitched even less in mlb: 8 starts and pitched only 36 innings. BTW, his ERA for those two years was 5.76 and 7.93, respectively. He didn't reach 100 IP until 2009 (113) and even then his ERA was still 4.53 which is below league average (93 ERA+). So I would argue that Homer really didn't break through as a quality mlb SP until 2012 at age 26 when he went 13-10 3.68 (112 ERA+) over 208 innings.

Stephenson is very frustrating and who knows if he'll ever put it all together, but it is pretty early to stick a fork in him, especially if you want to use Homer as his comp. imo.

I think Wright would be my pick of the 3 if he's available, but there isn't much linking him with the Reds. Several "experts" seem convinced that Greene is #1 on our board, followed by McKay (both as pitchers).

Not surprisingly, it sounds like Greene impressed the Twins, but perhaps not enough to get them to pick him:

Quote:TWINS PLAY HOST TO POTENTIAL NO. 1 PICK HUNTER GREENE
June 10, 2017 By John Manuel
With the big league team on the road Friday, the Twins hosted Hunter Greene at Target Field, and as usual, Greene put on a display.

While Greene hit .324 this spring for Notre Dame High with a team-best six home runs in 102 at-bats, he puts on power displays in workouts, as was the case Friday, according to several sources. The Twins’ front office brain trust was in attendance, including former big leaguers Torii Hunter and Michael Cuddyer, who are special assistants to the club. The ex-players were especially impressed with Greene’s power display and smooth, efficient infield actions.

Greene fielded ground balls at shortstop and threw a bullpen on the mound, hitting a reported 101 mph. None of this is new for Greene, who has put on incredible workout displays throughout his amateur career, including winning home run derbies. His talent puts him as the No. 1 prospect on the BA500.

Whether or not the display swayed the Twins wasn’t clear; one club official contacted about the workout and for reaction to BA’s recent Mock Draft merely said, “A decision has yet to be made” with the No. 1 pick.

Not disagreeing with your points in total but we can split hairs on what "breaking" in the majors is in terms of definition/timing/stats. While Homer's early stints were limited, he was still pitching on the Reds after only 2 years pitching exclusively in the minors. Stephenson can't compare in that sense. In no way am I putting a fork in him but you have to start to question if he'll ever pitch regularly (or stay in the majors) for the Reds.
"Quietly" Joey Votto has put together one of his better first half of the seasons in some time at first glance. He hit his 18th ding dong against the Dodgers today to go along with 50 ribbies, .303 avg., .611 slg., and .421 obp.
Losses don't get much more dispiriting than that. Hopefully they can pick up some wins in San Diego but the west coast is never kind to this team.

I had to do a double-take when I saw the final score. It was 7-3 thru seven innings. Glad I wasn't watching this one.
Gotta love the Redlegs. They four game sweep the Cards and then proceed to lose 7 in a row.

I hate the Dodgers. They are now 16-3 against us since 2015. 8 losses in a row...
Whatever, at least we'll get another good draft pick
I think you just came up with the new Reds ad campaign.
Not a good debut from Homer today. Hope he can turn it around. Over their first 36 games Reds were 19-17. Assuming they lose from the beatdown today, they have gone 11-26 since.

Second highest staff ERA in baseball right now (5.08). Amazing.
So Finnegan comes off the DL long enough to sprain his triceps in the 4th inning today.

The Reds' season in a nutshell so far.
Homer. 11 years. 175 games started. Career ERA approaching 4 and a half. Bueno.
Anybody else becoming a Scooter Gennett fan? I love how this guy plays the game and he's from Cincinnati to boot.
