My theme for this athletic year has been to temper my expectations. That being said, despite how craptacularly we've been this year, UTEP at least gets in the conversation if they win this week. That would put us at 3 wins with a favorable schedule remaining (Houston Baptist, FAU, Rice, and UNT).

First things first. Have to beat ODU.

It's possible we could both be at 5 wins entering the final game of the season. It would make for a lot of excitment: win and you go bowling, lose and you stay home. (Though it's possible we could make a bowl with 5 wins given our high APR if there aren't enough 6 win teams).

I don't like UTEP's odds of winning vs UNT right now. UNT is playing better but the game being in El Paso would give the Miners an outside shot. UTEP needs to go into that game at 6-5 if it wants to go bowling and I doubt that will happen. Fingers crossed though.

The hardest part of UTEP schedule is behind them. Even though the lost to FIU was disheartening, if UTEP wins this weekend they could be in good shape for 6 wins. HBU,RICE and FAU
Rice is definitely going bowling. We are a good team--according to Rice head Coach David Bailiff.

According to everyone else, Rice stinks worse than month-old milk left out on the sidewalk in July.

Rice was so close in the OT loss to UNT and the 1 point loss to UTSA with a last minute missed FG. Could be 3-4 with a good shot at being bowl eligible by beating FAU, Charlotte and UTEP. Still a shot at getting to 4 wins.

How warm is Bailiff's seat?

Interesting that he's right next to another former Rice Head Coach,
his predecessor:

For my money, Graham is a better football coach than David Bailiff will ever be in 100 lifetimes. Some schools have higher expectations than Rice's admin, though.

Burning up. If Fresno can fire their coach after a slow three season decline (after winning two conference championships and another division title) then Bailiff should have been gone yesterday.

To answer the thread title, WKU, USM, La Tech, MTSU, ODU and maybe UNT. The first four are locks, I feel pretty good about an ODU bowl game and sort of good about UNT.

If WKU or La Tech win the title...

Heart of Dallas - WKU
Independence - La Tech
New Orleans - USM
New Mexico - UNT
Boca Raton - MT
Hawaii - ODU

If WKU slips up and MT wins the title, flip MT and WKU. I think it's that simple this year given the teams that will be eligible and where they have gone the past few years. I think the conference office and our teams will want our two division winners against P5 schools, and then it's just geography after that, with the exception of ODU. It's almost a rite of passage to play your first bowl game at an incredibly far destination. Hawaii ain't a bad place to do it.

I have this as a very likely scenario as well.

I know some of our fans are love/hate with Shreveport. But give me an ACC team over the Sun Belt any day of the week.

EDIT: That said, if we lose to USM on Nov. 25th I lay money they end up in Shreveport instead.

I was fine with it last year. Now that we've done it I'd prefer something different. A P5 opponent will always be my first choice. A sunbelt opponent will usually be down the list. If Independence is an option for us against a P5, that would be my first choice. Dallas against a P5 would be my second choice. Outside of those date, time, tv coverage, and opponent would all be factors for me.
Im just guessing here, but I would imagine that if North Texas is bowl eligible, the HoD Bowl would take them above anyone else simply because of geography. Attendence for our win was significantly higher than any other current CUSA team has been able to draw.

I'm pretty sure they can only influence the decision.

Correct me if I am wrong but the schools get to select where they want to go based on final standings, no?

Who is the FOOL at SB Nation that says MT is not going to a Bowl this year? Geez! I despise SB Nation because they treat MT like the "99 lb. weakling" all the time! 03-banghead No Respect!!!!!!
1. Heart of Dallas: MT (or WKU, if they don't lose one)
2. New Orleans: La Tech
3. Boca: Western Ky. (or MT, if WKU runs the table)
4. Hawaii: ODU
5. Independence: Southern Miss
6. Bahamas: North Texas

The CUSA champion gets to choose. I believe the bowls choose the rest.
WKU will always choose Florida if they win. Better weather and their fans will travel.

LT has been to Dallas recently but would choose it again. Since we've beaten a P5 school, I'd love to go to Dallas and have a shot at another. Same for Shreveport. I bet LaTech would mob that place if they went. As long as we stay stateside, I'm good.

Doesn't work like that, whoever wins CUSA will first choice then the divisional winner second choice.

NT only had 38,330 in 2013. Tech vs Illinois had 31,297 and the economic impact of traveling fans far outweighs that difference in ticket sales.

I don't think that's correct that the division winner gets second choice. My understanding is that the champ is the only one who is supposed to get their choice. After that the conference works with the bowls and schools. It usually seems to go regional when possible.
Id like another shot at a P5 as well. Arkansas game couldve gone way better had we A-made FGs, and B- played Higgins. Texas Tech was just an unfortunate mismatch with our defense.
The Hawaii Bowl would be a great reward for one of our teams but will likely be a tougher game than usual if Hawaii actually gets bowl eligible. The home team as the opponent. The New Mexico Bowl may have the home team in it also.

The Hawaii Bowl on Christmas eve night as the only game on might be tough for fans to get to but great for the team.

You are correct Saint Greg. Just so happen that the last 3 west division champs have went to the HOD bowl. Edit Wrong - UNT was second to Rice in 2013

Will the HOD possible choose a third place west team for few thousand more local fans? I don't think so considering the Dallas Sports Commission is involved.
