In Paul Webb's ten seasons as the Monarchs head coach, Webb's teams advanced to post season play nine times. That includes four NCAA tournaments and five National Invitation Tournaments. His first ODU edition of 1975-76 advanced to the NCAA Division II Final Four. In all, Webb's teams had nine winning seasons, including school record winning seasons of 25-4 in 1976-77 (ODU's first Division I season) and 25-5 in 1979-80 which was ODU's first NCAA Division I tournament appearance. ODU defeated Georgetown, 80-58 for the ECAC South Championship. ODU won a then State record 22 straight games and Webb was named ECAC Upstate-Southern Division Coach-of-the-Year.

In 1978-79, the Monarchs advanced to the National Invitation Tournaments quarter-finals and compiled a 23-7 record. That season, the Monarchs went to Clemson and beat the Tigers in double-overtime.

In 1980, the Monarchs continued their "Giant Killing" ways with a 76-74 overtime victory against the Soviet Union National team and later that season, the Monarchs defeated their-ranked Syracuse in Scope, 68-67. On January 10, 1981, Webb's Monarchs stunned the basketball world handing number one ranked DePaul their first loss in the Horizon, 63-62.

I could not find any place that went back 35 years for rankings on the internet for the 80's.
I always remember that DePaul win as their 3rd loss in the Horizon Center. Are you sure it was their first?

That game was also Dick Vitale's first broadcast.

Was that the year of the ODU-UAB brawl?

Yes. That was the first Monarch game I ever attended -- as a newcomer to town and the beneficiary of a co-worker who couldn't use his season tickets that evening.

Obviously a memorable game.
Yup. It was also televised on ESPN.

DePaul has no love for ODU as we were also the team that gave them the biggest shellacking in their history.

"In 2005 DePaul's new coach Jerry Wainwright was curb stomped by Old Dominion with a winning margin of 44 points - ODU 87–43 (the worst defeat in DePaul's team's history).
The defeat was their first ever in the new Horizon Center. It had just opened that season. It was their first loss in that building. At least that is what the TV announcers said back then.

I believe Sports Illustrated ranked us in their preseason poll at no. 16 a few years back. Can't find the link though.

ESPN' s first telecast of NCAA basketball was a Dec. 5, 1979 DePaul victory over Wisconsin 90-77. Dick Vitale called that game.
Must read article on Top 25 and ODU backed by statistical analysis. You can read it here

Great work by @odubleedblue.

Help spread the word to the AP Top 25 voters listed at the following link.
http://collegebasketball.ap.org/poll (see link for voters towards bottom).
It's a good thing that ODU got its wins against VCU and LSU, because that's what helped them into the conversation. If they weren't already in the ARV category, the lackluster rest of the OOC schedule wouldn't be enough to get them there. Then ODU would be in a spot similar to Stephen F. Austin last season or Murray State a few years ago, where you have to have an orgy-in-an-oyster-filled-hot-tub sexy record to get noticed.

Georgia State and William and Mary will be good RPI games that won't do a damned thing to impress voters.
I have followed our beloved Monarchs since the early 1970's and while we have knocked on the "Top 20" door several times, the door has never been opened for us.
11-1 gets us there.
Richmond lost to JMU. That means the Richmond win is just another win, nothing special. 01-wingedeagle

That hurts. We can't afford to have the wheels come off for Richmond, VCU, or LSU.

That brawl was instigated by a friend of my roommate. Back in the day we sat right behind the opposing team's bench. This guy was on Bartow from the opening tip. Telling him he was too old, couldn't coach anymore, etc. He then told Bartow he was so old that he was going to die. With that Bartow looked at his players and said "get that SOB" and players jumped into the front row and starting swinging.

I think LSU and VCU will be fine. I'm afraid Spiders have burned wheel bearngs and will be in a rented Ford Fiesta for the duration.

ODU received 3 votes in the USA Today Coaches Poll. AP Top 25 hasn't been released yet. We didn't receive any votes in the Coaches Poll last week, so that's a good trajectory.
