That ranking adds a validity in a 17 year old kid's mind that the program is good and *other* people know it.
It also adds validity in the kid's parents mind, which is equally if not more important.
The bad news: I am thinking we have win out through WKU, we get ranked. At that point, we'll be 2 weeks into conference season and some of the power conference teams ahead of us will be eating their own enough to jump ahead of them. Just too many teams ahead of us that aren't going to lose to cupcakes before then.

The good news: If we do get that far without a loss, we have a slew of ensuing cupcakes on the schedule so if we get ranked, we are likely going to stay there for awhile.

If we were talking about where a mid season ranking gets you in the tournament then you'd have a point but as far as recruits go SMU is in dreamland for us. Some of that is Larry Brown, some of that is the ranking and some of that was the initial luck with Mudiay attracting other players before he bolted. As far as recruiting and rosters go, we can't talk smack about SMU.

???

Sorry bro, ODU>SMU

We're talking about the effect of results on recruiting. SMU has a ridiculous roster. Who has the best coaching, the best results, the best resume etc is a different conversation.
I guess well have to agree to disagree, as being ranked (and I wouldnt mind being ranked) is no where near as important in basketball as it is football. Its simply a dog and pony show that has no affect on whether or not you make the tournament, and if doesnt face any scrutiny or dissection when it comes out. For better or worse this sport is boiled down to three weekends in march, especially for midmajors. While being ranked regularly hurt a coach in the recruiting battle, if the number of times theyve made the tournament, and what theyve done in it is what sells to recruits and the general public.

No, I think you're right in that a mid season ranking means very little, just maybe SMU wasn't the best example. I was just being unnecessarily argumentative.

I don't think anyone is saying it matters much for making the tourney.

I think most of the better reasons are that it helps with recruiting and visibility.
I'd think we'll receive a few more votes this week considering the small blurb we got on BleacherReport. I'm sure at least a couple of the guys voting got wind of that article.
I'm seeing a lot of online stuff from voters in the top 25 poll. A few have released who they voted for. Of the three I saw they had VCU back in the top 25. These few I saw did not go past top 25 so no Monarchs listed.

UVA is up to #3; TCU drops out and Georgetown takes its place; VCU is at #27.

they didn't even play. that's got to be nice.
If ODU keeps winning and stretches it's record to 14-1, 15-1, or 16-1, the communal 25 watt light bulb which most of the voters share will eventually come on.

Most writers working for the press, think of the BleacherReport as a red-headed stepchild and a part of the thing that's taking paper media down.

I'm ok with 7 votes, will still got some work to do. Keeps the team on a even keel. Seemed like a few years ago, we starting getting votes, we would lose.

Bleacher Report is trying to improve its image, bringing in legitimate sports reporters, but they have a ways to go to get past the "random basement-dweller makes a slideshow about best boobs in the Big 12" image they've built over the years. They almost would have been better off leveraging their brand to create a legit reporting site with a new name and let BR be what it's been rather than try to serve two masters.
ODU holds steady at 8 points in the coaches' poll, but go from 35th last week to 33rd.

My guess is nobody read that BR blurb and most do not lend credibility to BR in the first place.

I doubt we get ranked because a loss is on the horizon. Slim chance we make it through the first 3 C-USA games unscathed.

Seth Davis has us as a sleeper pick:
"Old Dominion (10-1): Home wins over VCU and Georgia State indicate that the Monarchs are a real threat to win in Conference USA."

If we keep winning the rankings will take care of themselves.

But if we somehow manage to pull that off, it may be a long time before we lose again.
I have no clue how good Western Kentucky is or Charlotte, I've been around a long time though and saw teams every bit as good as this current Monarch team go to those places and get hammered. Some of you may even remember coach Tom Young chasing a Western player into the locker room after a defeat. That was the final nail for him. Tough places to play. We win the first three road games, I will be very, very,VERY happy.

I'm not saying ODU will win it's first three conference games on the road, but it did happen last season @ECU, and @F_U's. If it is going to happen the Monarchs are going to have to find a way to start games better.
Rice is hanging tough with #11 Texas. We need to be ready to play every night regardless of how "easy" our opponent appears to be.
