What has this guy accomplished?

Research him and look what he has done this year and the prior time as DC before he got demoted back to line coach and you may reconsider unless you think this is where our program is in terms of who we can attract. I don't. Perhaps that is my problem.

His D gave up like 31 points a game and their fans were not impressed. Look at who he has recruited. Seriously. Search Rivals and 247.

You can think what you want of him and I respect your opinion on that but for me I see a guy who coached a 23rd ranked rushing defense and 52nd ranked total defense. And you have to remember that UConn's offense was as abysmal as it's ever been. They averaged just 18 first downs per game. A defense can carry a team, sure, but at what point does the offense's ineptitude begin to strain the defensive players on the other side of the football. I'd be curious to see what he can do coaching a team that knows how to score points and keep its defense rested.

I have to believe those 31 points per game that UConn allowed is inflated due the offense doing nothing with the football and giving the opposing team short fields to work with. Heck, Husky quarterbacks threw 18 interceptions this year, including 4 pick-sixes, and had 1 fumble returned for a touchdown.
Some fair points. That D was not very good, however. It was prevent D most games. Perhaps that was personnel. Swing over to one of the Husky boards. During the season they made our criticisms of Gran look tame. They are high fiving that we might take him.

Deep down, you can't like this hire, can you? I get optimism, and rooting for your school and in TT I trust and all that, but this would be a bizarre hire unless we are not interested in moving this thing forward.

I guess I do not understand chucking a year of scheme, terminology, relationships and continuity for a guy like this. Especially when our defense was pretty decent overall. There is obviously more to the story than just recruiting.

I would take UConn's boards with a grain of salt. I have browsed the Boneyard on many occasions and note a warped sense of reality when it comes to their programs position in CFB. Every year I read posts over there like "I just can't believe we lost to a lowly program like Cincinnati" (all time record 8-2 us) or their insistence that they own the NYC television market.

I will agree with you there is likely more to the story than recruiting regarding Kauman's release. Tuberville worked with Kaufman in the past, but they were only together recently for one season at Texas Tech. I am sure we will never know the full story.
Has anyone thought about this. We have one of the best DC on staff right now maybe he is going to take over more control of that side of the ball and Kaufman did not want that so he let him go. I know he is suppose to be a hands off HC but maybe he just has seen enough over the past 4 years and said I need to step up. Just a thought.

So because they view a DCoordinator candidate differently than you, they are not interested in moving it forward. How can you possibly believe that with the Nippert expansion, TT contract, and overall commitment to the football program?

There could be more to the story, but I doubt it has anything to do with commitment. Maybe it was personal between TT and AK. Maybe Hughes has some specific ideas that TT wants to implement. Maybe TT just thinks our D wasn't good enough in the games against decent teams. The schedule certainly inflated everyone's opinion of our defense.

Fans of past teams don't concern me in the least. We, of all teams, should understand the dynamic of fans left by a coach. We talked badly about every coach we've lost recently. Texas Tech fans pretended to be happy with TT leaving as well. It really means nothing other than people don't want to say "hey he is a great coach and you swiped him from us". We're seeing the same thing from Bengals fans now that Gruden is gone.

Why dont you hire someone from the midwest with recruiting ties then?

Could be, Mark. Not sure what went down this past season to make that the priority, though.
If Koonz is coaching safeties could it be that hughes is coaching dline and linebackers? Then we are still looking for a dc?
UConn fans still think they have a shot at the B10

I am with you and the recruiting ties. If I was him I would have brought in a up and coming Defensive guy with ties to the Midwest but hey I am not him. I am still holding out hope that he is still looking right now.

Hoping it is something like that and the reports are incorrect.
What are these reports that everyone is referencing? I've never seen it anywhere that he was interviewed for the express intention of being hired as the DC here. I've only ever seen that he was interviewed. Dude needs a job, I'm pretty sure it would be smart to throw at the position coach level like he has been the past however many years (outside of this past season) and continue interviewing other candidates. I doubt that he is the only one who has been or will be interviewed for this position, so everyone needs to stop getting their panties in a bunch.

Still hearing ex-UConn DC Hank Hughes is top candidate to be new DC for #UC. #bearcats

Someone already posted this, but:

Cincinnati: Sources tell us LA Tech linebackers coach Jeff Koonz will join the Cincinnati staff coaching the linebackers we hear but could coach safeties depending on the DC hire (we hear Hank Hughes is lead candidate for that). Update> Sources tell us Hughes will be the defensive coordinator / linebackers and Koonz will coach the safeties.

So this guy was fired from uconn also? consider my panties in a bunch.
Anyone interested in bringing Rick Minter back to be DC?

Since Louisville brought Bobby home, why not bring Rick back. Since he was at Marshall for awhile then he should have decent local contacts.

Groeschen also tweeted the reason for letting Kaufman go was recruiting.

Maybe this info is wrong as well. 03-lmfao
