Smith was also one of five finalists for the Albany HC job. Doesn't come from a sexy name program, but sounds like a good hire.
Good hire, but Hanson is the main guy I hoped would stick around. I think this hire nixes that.
Does sound like a good hire. Probably would have preferred Hanson, but gotta allow Withers to assemble what he deems best.
Maybe Hanson takes a different position.

It's nice to see that this guy wins pretty much wherever he goes. I know that's often overstated in sports with guys like Tebow or McCarron, but it's nice to have someone on staff that knows winning and expects it.

Quote:Antoine Smith is in his third season as a member of Tom Gilmore’s coaching staff in 2013, serving as the defensive line coach. He has coached three All-Patriot League selections during his two years with the Crusaders, in Gary Acquah, Jack Maliska and Mike Tucker.

Smith came to Holy Cross after spending two seasons as the defensive line coach at Miami (Ohio) University. During the 2010 campaign, Smith helped lead the RedHawks to the Mid-American Conference title, and a victory in the GoDaddy.com Bowl. In addition, defensive tackle Austin Brown earned second team All Mid-American Conference honors in 2010.

Prior to his time at Miami (Ohio), Smith served as the defensive line coach at Youngstown State from 2006-2008, with the Penguins winning the 2006 Gateway Conference championship and advancing to the NCAA semifinals. His unit had six All-Missouri Valley Conference selections in his three seasons, including a third team All-American in defensive tackle Mychal Savage.

Smith was previously the defensive line coach at Lafayette from 2004-2005, helping the Leopards to a pair of Patriot League co-championships and two NCAA playoff appearances. During the 2005 campaign, he helped to direct a defense which ranked ninth in the nation in scoring defense (17.0 points per game), 11th in total defense (296.9 yards per game), 19th in pass defense (166.9 yards per game) and 28th in rush defense (130.0 yards per game).

Before moving to Lafayette, Smith spent the 2003 season as the defensive line coach at Maine. The Black Bears finished with a 7-5 mark, while Smith’s entire front-line unit received All-Atlantic 10 accolades.

Smith previously spent the 2002 season as the defensive line coach and strength and conditioning coordinator at Minot State in North Dakota. He helped guide Minot State to the 2002 Dakota Athletic Conference championship, a 9-2 record and a berth in the NAIA playoffs, the Beavers’ first since 1994.

Smith earned his bachelor’s degree in physical education and kinesiology from Maine in 2001, and his master’s degree in health and human performance from Minot State in 2004. He was a three-year starter at defensive tackle and a four-year letterwinner for Maine from 1996-1999............

Smith's Collegiate Coaching File
Years School Position Championships
2002 Minot State Defensive Line Coach Dakota Athletic Conference Champions (2002)
2003 Maine Defensive Line Coach
2004-2005 Lafayette Defensive Line Coach Patriot League Champions (2004, 2005)
2006-2008 Youngstown State Defensive Line Coach Gateway Conference Champions (2006)
2009-2010 Miami (Ohio) Defensive Line Coach MAC Champions (2010)
2011-2013 Holy Cross Defensive Line Coach

Looking at that resume, he would seem to know JMU very well. (2006 Youngstown, 2003 Maine)

One thing that sticks out to me, though....Why did he go from Miami (MAC champions in his last year) to Holy Cross? I would understand it if he was moving a "higher" coaching position - but he went from being a D-Line coach in the MAC to being a D-Line coach in the NEC. Does anyone know why this happened?

Looks like Everett Withers is taking Ohio State grad assistant Drew Mehringer to James Madison with him as his co-OC & quarterbacks coach.

hmm...going from GA to Co-OC is a pretty big step.
Not much about him but found his Bio on OSU's site. Played at Rice, GA at Iowa State and OSU.

Agree. Wonder who the other Co-OC is. O'Cain?
Im very intrigued by the Mehringer hiring....a lot of good college coaches made a similar leap from GA to OC or at the very minimum QB coach at a young age. I guess Withers really likes what he sees in Mehringer and thinks he'll bring an innovative offense to the Dukes.

The current Ohio State offensive GAs -- Drew Mehringer and Parker Fleming, both 25 -- don't sleep in the Buckeyes' facility. (Their GA office is dubbed the "G Spot," a racy nickname that belies the room's cramped, storage closet vibe.) They work about 17 hours a day, attend graduate school classes and occasionally sleep. All for $24,000 a year. They also never complain.

One of the GAs' primary responsibilities is putting together the practice scripts (as dictated by the coaches), and Fleming said not a day goes by when he's not sprinting to the copier to make sure they're delivered on time. "It's a pretty bleak existence," admitted Herman.

this begs the question...who is the other "co" coach for offense and qbs?

glad to see he played QB, and not that long ago...may be good at relating to the youngsters, plus he did just learn a pretty amazing offense.
Is there a single instance of co-OC or co-DC in FCS football?
smokey fire!!

Appears Withers is recruiting a staff with a strong work ethic. Sounding good so far.
Not sure how I feel yet about co-OC- gotta see who the second name is before being judgemental about it.
I can't see JMU having a long term co-OC.....I'm purely speculating, but I'm betting that we'll have a co-OC for a year (two at most) for the young guy to get his feet under him. Does O'Cain want to take a step back and groom JMU's OC of the future for a year until he can find a new gig?--I have no idea.
Co-OC and DFO would both be new positions for JMU, correct? Starting to get the feeling there may have been more very understandable things delaying the Withers signing a week ago when we were all freaking out and I like it! Wonder if some of the delay wasn't him explaining his vision and lobbying JB for additional positions/different structure/more $ for asst's/etc., all of which would be a good thing.
