I am not sure why you guys keep thinking VCU would accept an invite. They can schedule just fine OOC and the A10 is a tight league that is only slightly worse than AAC in basketball. Regardless of how good the A10 is (as last year was a down year for them and for VCU) they still got an 8 seed. That is pretty much their floor. Why would they leave to join a conference that is football first? Think they stay put unless other top A10 teams leave.

2019: AAC #6; A10 #11
2018: AAC #7; A10 #11
2017: AAC #7; A10 #8
2016: AAC #8; A10 #7
2015: AAC #8; A10 #7

Sorry if this has been discussed elsewhere, I don't peek in other threads we aren't invited into :D
Do you see a pattern here?

The idea that the conference won't only add a non-football member is off base. The conference can improve all around by shedding UConn football and replacing UConn basketball with a much better program and a much better fan base. VCU fits the American athletically, culturally, geographically, and academically. It's the only available slam dunk.

There's not a chance in hell they stay in the sinking A10 if indoors. And in the off chance the league does implode in a few years and the A10 magically becomes the 5th or 6th best hoops conference, they'll be welcomed back in a heartbeat.

Also can we talk about Buffalo? They're a top three candidate in case of full expansion. Again, ommitted.

Maybe they don't want to wait and be stuck when other teams leave. Those comparison numbers are nice, but what would they be ranked if you moved VCU from the A10 to the AAC in those years? Specifically the last 2 years that have had the same membership other wise. It's a wide gulf between the 2 leagues then. You'd look stupid trying to argue a VCU-less A10 is better than an AAC+VCU league.

Well, yeah of course the AAC with VCU would be a better conference than the A10 without VCU. I don't think I made the argument that the A10 is currently better anyway. The AAC is not immune to bottom feeders in basketball, it comes with more travel costs, and comes with new schools and the removal of current rivals. I'm just not sure if all of that is really worth it to them, unless the money is really that much better. Does anyone know how much more money they'd be expecting to make if they made the switch? Dumb question - how much added exposure do they really get if they are going to be ranked in the top 25 most weeks anyway?

About 2.1 million a year in media money alone + a share of NCAA basketball credits.

So 2.1M vs 400K in TV money? So 1.7M increase.

If they make the NCAA tourney every year and lose in the first round they'll get roughly 1.3M due to the revenue sharing agreement where they keep 75% of what they earn. If the AAC averages 6 credits a year (pretty generous) VCU will bring in roughly 840K/year once they start earning full credits. So that's a 0.5M decrease.

So they might net over a million more in revenue (although a sweet sixteen run by them would negate that instantly) plus increased travel. To join a FB oriented league that is much more unstable than their current BB oriented one.

Not a slam dunk decision by them.

I've been on Dayton and VCU's boards and both of their fanbases want to come to the AAC like Wichita State. As much as anything because they know if one of them leaves where that leaves to the AAC or Big East eventually the A10 is the new CAA. That's not even including all the financial advantages pointed out.

So you think a prudent administrator, who is in charge of setting a financially responsible course for the athletic department, is going to ignore a significantly higher guaranteed stream of revenue on the gamble that VCU will make the tournament EVERY SINGLE year (when they only have historically made it 29% of the time) and that they will make the sweet 16 at least once every 6 years (when they have only made it once in their entire history)? C'mon. Get real.

Instead of looking at their entire history, I would look at how often they've made the tournament since their final 4 run. It's more relevant to base the projections from recent history compared to what was done in the 80s.

Since making their final 4 run in 2011, VCU has made it into the tournament in 7 out of 8 years. Seems like a prudent call to assume you're gonna make it nearly every year.

It's pretty clear that VCU doesn't need the AAC, and there's no reason to assume they have interest in joining.

And now that I'm done defending VCU, I need to take a long bath.

I feel you man but I was going to make the same point. And ODU can tell you what happened to our "guaranteed stream of revenue" in CUSA. If there's an exodus from the AAC in the next 5 years then the same will happen to their TV deal. So currently, it seems like a wash financially when you add in increased expenses but with greater risk down the road.

Does VCU really have any big rivals in the A10? As a WSU fan, I'd venture to say the WSU/VCU thing would be one of the best rivalries if it was every year. There was already a lot of bad blood between the Bracket Buster Days and the whole Carl Hall thing.

ODU is one of the few candidates who has a football program worse than UCONN.

Average less than 20k/game. Stadium holds a measly 22k. Have proven nothing since moving up to FBS.

This is honestly comical.

So currently, it seems like a wash financially when you add in increased expenses but with greater risk down the road.

An exodus from the American in the next 5 years? Where they all going? We’ve lost UConn who for some reason wants less exposure and less money, lose football, all to spite the American, but I don’t believe there is a line at that door for any other schools.

C'mon.

As a rule, college administrators are largely a pretty risk averse group.

It's pretty clear that VCU doesn't need the AAC, and there's no reason to assume they have interest in joining.

And now that I'm done defending VCU, I need to take a long bath.

It might be if Smart or even Wade was still there. The current coach is batting .500 No prudent administrator is basing their budget on making the tournament every year. In general, college administrators tend to be a pretty risk averse group.

Average less than 20k/game. Stadium holds a measly 22k. Have proven nothing since moving up to FBS.

This is honestly comical.

You keep saying this crap. We have only averaged less than 20K in football one year out of the decade we've been playing and with a stadium capacity of 20,118 that's not a small task. Do you know how many programs out of CUSA, Sun Belt and the MAC that could have sold out our "tiny" stadium for 9 straight years? One, and it's us. That goes for half the AAC and MWC too I imagine. I'm not saying we're the best candidate or should be invited to the AAC, we do have some growing to do. But I'm not listening to this **** from a Marshall fan. Your stadium holds 40K and you average 24K?!?!?! You should be ******* embarrassed. We can expand our stadium, not much you can do about the shithole you root for.
