RE: EMU vs DUKE 11-14
I beg to differ. I remember the recruitment and the stories like coaches were afraid to recruit him for fear of looking foolish.

The only D-I schools interested were Kent and EMU.

Matter on signing day, I asked an EMU coach: "Why?" Said he can play. They were right.

You are wrong on the accolades. He was lowly ranked and EMU took and chance and won big. He was a big scorer but everyone was afraid of his size.

Remember when he came to EMU he was short and not muscular. Earl did a great job making himself a great athlete and great college player.

I really don't know what point you're trying to make honestly. You said I was wrong on his accolades. He was first team Div 2 All State. I think that means he was 1 of the 5 highest regarded players in his division. I know the recruitment of Boykins pretty well since I play pick up basketball with one of the former players who met with Boykins on his recruiting visit to EMU. I appreciate your optimism and basketball recruiting information but I'll leave it at that. Now have a great Thanksgiving!

I really followed recruiting back then. Earl was not highly BECAUSE of his very small size.

I never said he couldn't play ball. He was a very good basketball player. Big time scorer in high school. Being ranked in D-2, etc. (high school) does not translate to be a good recruit.

There are plenty of stories out there where Braun and the Kent HC said, we will get a steal with Boykins or look like fools...

Didn't he weigh something like 135 lbs when he was recruited? 135 lbs is what those Kenyans who run Boston or NYC marathons weigh.

BTW, I found the Sports Illustrated article Nov. 17, 1997 in which Earl was featured. and I just noticed that it was autographed by Boykins, Dials, Nink, and one more, was Zajac #1?

I might scan and post it tomorrow. That statement about Braun saying he'll be a genius or look like a fool is a QUOTE from the article (I didn't make it up).

Steve, I think your argument is wrong on Boykins. He probably did not get many offers because he was 5’3”. Not because he was under the radar. Same reason he was not drafted by the NBA (cover of sports illustrated is fefinitely not under the radar).

You might be able to apply your logic to say Derrick Dial for example. Maybe he was under the radar of recruitment from big programs- and snagging a similar level player might be more difficult today given all the available data. (I am not agreeing, just saying I understand your point).

[quote='TheWoodenNickle' pid='15691726' dateline='wist things like a Buffalo pulled off the upset because they played above their expected level. A Murphy coached team has never given us an indication that they are capable of exceeding expectations. If anything, they've under-achieved with Murphy. High talent level with mediocre results. They'll probably never get to the NCAA under him. If they do they'll get smoked in the 1st round.

For these reasons I think a change is necessary.

Very good point.

Yikes. You flipped my argument.

the REASON Boykins didn't get many offers was his 5' 3" SIZE and light weight

He was NOT under the radar. I believe he went to Cleveland Catholic Central high school, not some small school off the beaten track.

RE: EMU vs DUKE 11-14
I think we AGREE with this statement.

Boykins was a GREAT h.s. basketball player who did not PROJECT to be a D-I player because of his size (5' 5", 135 lbs).

Either Kent and EMU or only EMU offered him out of high school.

This is always true in high school sports. A h.s. QB who is say 5' 9"?

A really good OL who weights 220 lbs. How does he project in a sport which wants OLs 275+
