RE: Rice/Hawaii Pre-game Thread
One TV listing I found says the game will be on ESPN 1420. Another says it will be on Spectrum, whatever that is.

So for all practical purposes this game won't be televised?

There is no concept of punctuation or basic sentence construction. This is a joke, right?

Come on, now. What good does it do for anybody to trash the kid and make fun of his writing? One of the main reasons athletes dislike Rice socially is because you're looked down upon if you don't write well enough or your comments in class aren't sophisticated enough.

What do you expect from two of Rice's worst representative 'fans'?

High horse much? You're just angry you got called out for posting incorrect results among other things. As for the 'fans' part, sorry I don't blindly follow the party line. Fans don't need to be dissent-free acolytes.

For elw4796 - There is a large chasm between being a stickler for eloquence and having expectations of basic grammar and sentence construction. This is not poking at someone who hasn't read all the works of Shakespeare. The whole situation is concerning from the posts above, to leaving Rice so soon, to exactly what processes were seemingly bypassed etc.

I downloaded the Stadium App on my iphone (the game is listed as Stadium App only for "TV" on Riceowls.com). The Stadium app does have the game listed for Saturday. I set a reminder, can't seem to record it like the Fobu app which worked brilliantly for the UH game, but I'm pretty sure I saw a Rice game once on Stadium and it worked fine. 7-day free trial, $4.99 after that monthly, so signing up now for the free trial works. Did not ask me for a credit card, but I haven't tried watching a live event.

Spectrum Sports is a regional sports network that broadcasts in a very random collection of states, including Hawaii. ESPN 1420 is the Honolulu ESPN radio affiliate. The game is on 94.1 FM in Houston and on the Stadium network (looks like an online/app stream), but I don't see it on the schedule link below, so who knows how anyone not in Hawaii is supposed to view it.

https://watchstadium.com/schedule/

Edit: looks like the app has a different viewing schedule than the link above, per Buho00

FBO, maybe it wasn't you (but I think it was), didn't you make a post a couple months back questioning the job that Julie Griswold was doing in our academic support office?

Faateete's quick dropout seems to lend credence to that theory.

No need to call Antarius and I two of Rice's worst fans... We're better fans than 98% of recent alumni (in the sense that we care).

That writing sample is beyond the help of any academic advisor. Not saying that to criticize him but to question what our new standards are for entrance because that’s not representative of the football players I know from Rice. Hopefully this was a “come take summer classes and if you get up to speed you can stay” scenario. I’d be fine with that.

Good memory. 7-31-2018.

(07-31-2018 04:45 PM)Fort Bend Owl Wrote:  This may be an unpopular take by me but I'm going to say it anyway. I put the blame squarely on Julie Griswold and her staff. Julie probably has more seniority at Rice in the athletic department than anyone (either her or Jim Bevan) but this is twice in two years where I'm sorry, I think she may have put her personal relationship with a basketball athlete above that of the athletic department's best interests (Chad Lott being the other).

Her job is two-fold IMO. One and most importantly, she has to help the student-athletes succeed at Rice, and graduate with (hopefully) a meaningful degree. She and her staff do a great job in that area.

But secondly, she has to work with the individual sports to make sure their roster needs are being met. So if athletes are in danger of flunking out, the coaches need to be kept abreast of that situation (which I'll assume is the case). And conversely, if an athlete wants to transfer to another school to be pre-med (as in Lott's case), she needs to try to convince that athlete that Rice is just as good an option for someone who wants to go to medical school.

And if someone like Connor comes to her and wants to find out what he needs to do to graduate in 3 years, I think Julie needs to let the coach know right away about that meeting. I find it hard to believe that Cashaw would have transferred without some consultation first with Griswold or a member of her staff.

Again this is all speculation on my behalf, but if Griswold is valuing a personal relationship with an athlete more than her relationship with a coach, then that is a serious issue. Rice is investing too much money and resources in its student-athletes for anyone in the department to not be toeing the company line.

We've been losing too many athletes to transfers, not just in basketball. Really it's been across the line in every sport. Sorry but I think it's time for a change in academic advising.

Pass through Fremont regularly....

I'd guess that at least some of the comments are intended to speak to a different audience... one where such cultural norms (to us) are not the norms. He's perhaps writing as if he's speaking to University employees, but I'm betting he's more concerned about what his friends think about it. Like it or not, that IS how lot's of people in this area communicate.

I'd also note that I can't type on a Surface Pro virtual keyboard... punctuation et al (including spelling as my fat fingers miss the center of letters and spell-check is weak at best) go completely out the window.

Probably not a joke, but I don't see why we need to rag on former players, especially folks from disadvantaged backgrounds.

More concerning than this one particular instance is the continual decline in our APR over the last few years.

I'm not picking on some random person, nor am I intending to rag or be mean. Just that Rice has certain standards (or claims to) and this isn't even in the same universe as those. This is concerning as apparently some due diligence was missed, suppressed or is otherwise entirely lacking.

If the above becomes a pattern and isn't addressed, then we likely will be scratching our heads bemoaning our misfortune when the next transfer epidemic hits.

I read some of his hi school tweets, and the kid appears to have a lot of baggage he's hauling around - mainly lack of a father figure, combined with a tough neighborhood to grow up in. While I certainly don't hold his diction against him (it's none of my business), I did wonder how he would survive in the 'University of Rice' curriculum. Culturally I wondered the same thing.

It's all a shame tho, selfishly speaking - he's a helluva running back. TSU has got a good one.

From a MWC preview...

Quote:"Beware of the buzzkill Rice Owls. The 1999 and 2001 seasons were the best of times for Hawaii football. The 1999 Warriors shocked college football be finishing 9-4 after a winless 1998 season. The 2001 team went 9-3 and destroyed a previously undefeated BYU team in the season finale. Both those seasons had few negatives, but one common occurrence? Two bad losses to Rice in Honolulu. A 19-38 blowout in 1999, and a close 24-27 loss in 2001. With optimism the highest it has been for years, Hawaii should be wary that these Owls have a history of spoiling the party."
