Surprise Sighting
As I was waiting for basketball practice to start yesterday I saw Conner Cashaw in the Tudor lobby. He's going to summer school to get his degree. I asked him why he left and he said it's time to go to work and make some money. Don't know exactly what that meant. Is he going to be a grad transfer, playing pro somewhere or going to get a job. The coaches are so upset with him that they won't mention his name.

A google search revealed this:
https://www.omaha.com/creighton/mens-bas...72bd1.html

Hi is apparently going to be at Creighton this coming year. "I’ve been dreaming about going to the NCAA tournament and playing for a huge fan base like Creighton’s. " Ouch.

While in some ways I appreciate that he didn't make a huge production out of his transfer like some others have, he did eff the staff over by doing it so late in the process... They had no legitimate way to fill his spot with a transfer, freshman, or another grad transfer.

I think we have to admit that being a basketball player at Rice the last few years, and going through all that has happened, would have to be man incredibly frustration experience. I'm sorry it ended this way, but I can't really find too much fault in the young man.

I hope that is what is upsetting them and not the fact that he is leaving.

The players made their own bed when it comes to the team’s quality. For such a “family” they’re all just looking out for themselves and want to play where they believe they can get the most exposure. Connor is graduating and leaving so I don’t fault him for leaving like I do other players. However he was supposed to be the senior captain and center piece for next years team and instead of letting the coaches know he quietly searched for other programs and left when we had no chance to find a replacement. So I do fault him for that. It’s not like he didn’t know he was leaving he just didn’t want the coaches to find out until after he had decided his landing spot.

“Getting paid” is because all of these guys think they’ll play pro ball. $2k/ month to play in a 3rd tier league in Europe doesn’t appeal to me but I guess these guys think they can hoop their way to the big time. The only person I’ve seen with that potential at Rice was Evans.

RE: Surprise Sighting
This may be an unpopular take by me but I'm going to say it anyway. I put the blame squarely on Julie Griswold and her staff. Julie probably has more seniority at Rice in the athletic department than anyone (either her or Jim Bevan) but this is twice in two years where I'm sorry, I think she may have put her personal relationship with a basketball athlete above that of the athletic department's best interests (Chad Lott being the other).

Her job is two-fold IMO. One and most importantly, she has to help the student-athletes succeed at Rice, and graduate with (hopefully) a meaningful degree. She and her staff do a great job in that area.

But secondly, she has to work with the individual sports to make sure their roster needs are being met. So if athletes are in danger of flunking out, the coaches need to be kept abreast of that situation (which I'll assume is the case). And conversely, if an athlete wants to transfer to another school to be pre-med (as in Lott's case), she needs to try to convince that athlete that Rice is just as good an option for someone who wants to go to medical school.

And if someone like Connor comes to her and wants to find out what he needs to do to graduate in 3 years, I think Julie needs to let the coach know right away about that meeting. I find it hard to believe that Cashaw would have transferred without some consultation first with Griswold or a member of her staff.

Again this is all speculation on my behalf, but if Griswold is valuing a personal relationship with an athlete more than her relationship with a coach, then that is a serious issue. Rice is investing too much money and resources in its student-athletes for anyone in the department to not be toeing the company line.

We've been losing too many athletes to transfers, not just in basketball. Really it's been across the line in every sport. Sorry but I think it's time for a change in academic advising.

If you want to leave...leave. Fine. He did his time but I'm irked about the fact that he's hanging around training at our facilities. I did my fair share too but I cant go work out without paying.

Lots of speculation there...

- Lott didn’t leave to be a premed. I’m not sure why that keeps being repeated on here. It’s pretty clear why he left and from what I’ve heard it sounds like it’s not working out to be a good decision.

- it’s not hard to see what you need to graduate. Hopefully anyone who gets into Rice knows how to read the info from the registrar. She probably didn’t even know before Pera.

- I’ve heard Pera is pretty good about checking on grades and attendance. Not sure how it compares to other sports but Rice overall is definitely good in this area. If a kid like Naaja decides he’s just going to skip finals not much Pera can do about that. Have fun in JUCO, you don’t go there to play school!

Lott said publicly that he wanted to leave to be Pre-Med so I think that’s where people get that. As to his actual motivations, that’s something different.

With regard to Griswold, she’s fine. I would point out though that our football APR is lower than many of peer institutions.

RE: Surprise Sighting
I can understand Pera's frustration about Connor, but we've just gotta turn over a new leaf and look forward at this point. That 2016 class probably gave Rice basketball some of its most exciting moments in a pretty bleak stretch of years. Yeah, it didn't end up as everybody would have hoped, but we've got another highly touted freshman class on campus and an opportunity to start over. Keep these new kids happy and at Rice, see if we can make a surprise splash on the recruiting trail, and build from there.

Connor's leaving was disappointing, but it was the timing that was upsetting. He announced it so late that we didn't have time to get a replacement.

What's funny to me is even the football player who loved to flaunt his transfer the most (Calvin Anderson), still has outward signs of affection toward Rice on his Twitter profile and what not.

The basketball players seem to have no such love...

Won't say much to stay well away from FERPA territory, but the speculation below about Julie Griswold is not accurate.
