JJ winning lots of meaningless games gives Woody cover until he can afford to do something better.
Only think Woody has to watch is basketball ticket sales and ODAF contributions. If they drop more than the cost of a new coach, JJ will be gone.

I think you are probably right to some extent, at least in Woody's rationale, but I would argue that we can get a good coach for half a million a year. It would just require some work and some risk, two things this admin does not seem to be amenable to.

What good coach can you get for half a Mill in today’s landscape? And how do you define good? Is it wins/losses, ability to go to the dance, etc?

Not yet. Still waiting on the NCAA who we all know is more than a little mercurial in their decisions *(unless it is UNC).

Urban Meyer only being suspended for three games doesn't bode well for us.

What does that have to do with ODU? Hell what does it have to do with the NCAA?

It's a joke based on some quotes from Jerry Tarkanian basically implying double standards for enforcing rules by the NCAA. Like - "The NCAA was so mad at Kentucky they gave Cleveland State two more years of probation." I do realize that Meyer's situation was school imposed and not NCAA so doesn't fully fit here.

There is a huge question...can ODU even file with the NCAA if Dickens isn't on the roster or admitted to ODU ? My understanding is class work at Providence and a CC is still an issue. He has been working on it That should be resolved by now hopefully.

2,825 ODAF members for 2017. So far this year 2,013. And I was in the top 10% and still ask with my token contribution to keep consecutive years going.

I am with you on this. I don't profess to be a huge Jones fan but in the end his body of work has been solid and he has had us in contention just about every year. Whether people want to believe it or not the program was in the dumpster in BT's last years and Jones made us pretty respectable that first year. Plus, as Minium says he graduates his players. My biggest knock on Jones is that he didn't develope his bench at all least year when he finally had some depth, even though it was young. I am hoping as Bryant Smith and other assistants get more comfortable with him they are in his ear about that topic.

I guess... If you strive for being "solid". This shows exactly how much this administration cares about excelling at basketball. None.

The move to CUSA is what signified that ODU was going all in on football. Some fans just haven’t figured that out yet

It's comments like this that probably met with reaction from some fans calling you names or whatever you were complaining about in your first post. Just because you don't care about basketball doesn't mean the rest of us are okay with the administration making decisions against basketball. And yeah, the way you are posting in this thread is pretty insufferable. Congratulations on getting what you wanted. For some of us, this is actually painful.

It’s not painful for me, surprisingly, because I fully expected it to happen.

They are boys from UVA and wood likes his puppet. He hasn’t been bad enough to “fire” I was just hoping he wasn’t good enough to extend (which he absolutely wasn’t) but it’s clear UVA sycophancy runs deeper than anyone actually knows.

Without doing any research I can say UNCW got Keatts for less than that. I'm sure there are others I could find.

RE: Jeff Jones Contract Extension
Here is a very good analysis of JJ's career. Written by Herdzone from Marshall. Seems fans from other schools can see reality better than some of our own.

Well Jones is 114-58 at ODU. I don't see it as he can't win the big one, its he can't win the right ones. Jones style of play just like Tony Bennett and others went out of play even in college in the mid 80s. Defense plus the first to 50 usually doesn't get you to a conference title or winning the right games. You have to have more than one capable shooter on a team.

In his 26 years as HC he has only won 2 conference titles (both at American) and 3 division titles (one at Virginia and 2 at American).

Jesus that is horrifying to read even full well knowing how much I already think jones isn’t deserving. WOW.

Conference regular season championships might be the truest measure of a coach.

It’s not having a few lucky games in a tourney or hitting rpi gold or maybe lucking out some good OOC wins........it’s competing head to head over the course of a season (16 or 18 games) against similar (theoretically) teams and seeing who is the best.

2 in 26 years is horrible by every single measure. Jesus.

I will give Woody credit for one thing: it was smart of him to drop this turd on the cusp of the start of football season.

LOL.

I guess the only thing worse than a mediocre coach is a lame duck mediocre coach.

I hope the admin sees something that I don't. Yes, I'm excited about the talent he's bringing in. But we've been there too many times before.

Not yet. Still waiting on the NCAA who we all know is more than a little mercurial in their decisions *(unless it is UNC).

Urban Meyer only being suspended for three games doesn't bode well for us.
What has that got to do with Dickens? Meyer was suspended by his school.
