I don't really see this as a surprising development.

Now, to never open this thread again cause oh boy it's gonna be a doozy.

Congrats to Jeff. Hopefully he continues this streak of recruiting. If he does, we will be seeing the NCAA Tournament very soon.

This was well earned and deserved, and I am glad to see it happen. Hide and watch, guys. Good things have happened, and even better things are ahead.

Not yet. Still waiting on the NCAA who we all know is more than a little mercurial in their decisions *(unless it is UNC).

Urban Meyer only being suspended for three games doesn't bode well for us.

I am with you on this. I don't profess to be a huge Jones fan but in the end his body of work has been solid and he has had us in contention just about every year. Whether people want to believe it or not the program was in the dumpster in BT's last years and Jones made us pretty respectable that first year. Plus, as Minium says he graduates his players. My biggest knock on Jones is that he didn't develope his bench at all least year when he finally had some depth, even though it was young. I am hoping as Bryant Smith and other assistants get more comfortable with him they are in his ear about that topic.

I guess... If you strive for being "solid". This shows exactly how much this administration cares about excelling at basketball. None.

RE: Jeff Jones Contract Extension
They should have waited to see how this season goes first. And it seems a 2 year extension would have sufficed to show support, and make it a lot less expensive if he has to be let go. If we aren’t in the NCAAs within 2 more seasons I don’t see how even Wood can justify keeping him around. I also wouldn’t have given him any raise, but made the NCAA bonus $75k. Im ok with the short extension considering recruiting is up, but it shouldn't mean he's still around 4 years from now without an NCAA appearance.

RE: Jeff Jones Contract Extension
I am done. I will continue to go to games and support the players, but not another dime to this athletic department in the form of a donation or basketball season ticket until they show that they actually want to get better, rather than maintaining a moderately acceptable status quo. I get the recruiting argument, but this was not the time, especially for a 4 year deal. If he doesn't make the NCAAT this season it needed to be over, and they just **** on that possibility. The AD basically just admitted that they are okay with a coach not making the tournament for at least 6 consecutive year, because they can't fire him for at least a couple more years at this point. I find that to be completely unacceptable at ODU. We are better than that.

My decision to no longer contribute to ODAF or purchase tickets has been validated. They are free to make all of the bad choices they like, just without my money.

No crying over spilled milk.

Wood rewarding mediocrity is hardly surprising.

Enjoy this program for what it is, a non NCAA tourney making also ran who can look forward to making the NIT once in a while. Way to “lock that up”.

Wish we all could have so much job security with little to no actual results that matter lol.

C’est la vie!

Maybe Woody's reasoning goes like this. " I can't afford to fire JJ and bring on a new coach at any kind of higher salary while I'm financing football stadium." If you fire JJ and bring on a new, inexperienced coach at a lesser salary you are really rolling the dice. I think it's a money decision more than anything else. JJ winning lots of meaningless games gives Woody cover until he can afford to do something better.
Only think Woody has to watch is basketball ticket sales and ODAF contributions. If they drop more than the cost of a new coach, JJ will be gone.

It is a two year extension. He had two years remaining on his current contract, so this season and next. The replaced that with a four year contract through the 21-22 season. If they were ready to fire him after this season then I agree, wait and see how it goes and either fire or extend then. This signals to me that they want to give him at least this season and next.

What does that have to do with ODU? Hell what does it have to do with the NCAA?

I think you are probably right to some extent, at least in Woody's rationale, but I would argue that we can get a good coach for half a million a year. It would just require some work and some risk, two things this admin does not seem to be amenable to.

The move to CUSA is what signified that ODU was going all in on football. Some fans just haven’t figured that out yet

If your donation was of a relevant size they would care what you think. But since it’s not, they are okay with you taking your money and going home07-coffee3

I believe that is correct. My take, however, is, so what if he makes the tournament in his 7th year. I don't want to extend a coach that makes one tournament every 7 years at that point. This coming season should have been make or break. This was a cowardly, visionless move.
