RE: Possible Steps on Getting Rid of Tubby - Your Input
Well if their intentions are to go with penny then you make tubby uncomfortable. Have it where everytime tubby turns around, there's penny. Have penny do promotions for the university not necessarily basketball related.
Have tmz post pics of Lil penny at rendezvous eating with Fred smith and Laurie. It's early. I may not have thought all of this thoroughly.

Dude, he’s getting paid $3 million/year. Why would he care?

How is that different from the klan burning a cross in a black man's yard? Sounds like possibly the worst idea ever conceived.
I take it that you don’t watch South Park
I haven't seen that show in about 15+ years. Now had you referenced a Patrick Duffy leg or something then it might have clicked.

With all due respect, if Tubby leaves involuntarily there's only one way that can happen. The financial details are simply details.

Bowen is going to tell him to change his staff this summer. If he says no, you may be able to force his hand. Other than that, he's coming back.

They don’t have to pay Tubby the remaining $9 or 10m immediately in March if he is fired. They have 6 years to pay it off. The $ to do is there or else they wouldn’t have offered him the contract they did. This isn’t like Josh’s buyout nor does TS have the automatic rollover (thanks RC & Shirley)
Theoretically they could fire Tubby, pay him $1.6 for the next 6 years, hire Penny or Forbes or whoever at $1.2m a year and save money. Hell, give Norvell and/ or his staff the other 400k. They’ve earned it.
At some point, they’ll have to make the change. The athletic department can’t keep taking the financial hit that loss of donations, loss of ticket revenue and missions out on Grizz payment brings. The sooner the decide to cut their losses, the better off Tiger basketball will be.
Dude, most everyone knows about the payout.
You sound like a millennial. All THEY have to do is pay someone $1.6 million per year for the next 6 years. Easy to spend other people’s money. This university spends years trying to raise funds for infrastructure (IPF, etc).
Well when the next guy has a couple of mediocre seasons and doesn’t get us into the tournament by year 2, I guess we’ve got to go back and spend other people’s money again.
Every year the payout becomes lower, and I suspect if Tubby doesn’t get it us into the NCAA next year, he’s gone. I really doubt they’ll pay him off this year, but if a donor wants to pay him, I’m good with that. Very few people walk away from $3 million dollar/year jobs, but maybe he’d take less to move on. A negotiated settlement might happen, you never know....
I’m not spending anyone’s money that isn’t already allocated to be spent

Exactly right, 1987. 1998 demonstrates the millennial mind, the kind of financial savvy that has their generation over $1 Trillion in student loan debt.
And Tubby has staff control, since some can't seem to remember he moved Keelon off the staff.

Aw, I read the thread title and thought '83 was sharing what some ambassador had asked him. What a letdown.

Tell all the Memphis kids and their families to stay away from him.
Have the media pressure him more about the future after losses..i.e. what went wrong and how it can be corrected.
Make him live up to his part of the contract that says he has to promote the team---i.e. raise money.
Do some impromptu interviews with his assistants, such as Saul, when you see him around town...
Make them ride buses to all games East of the Mississippi.

Fart bombs.
Everywhere.
In his office, hallway, practice floor, parking lot, car, his house, locker room, pocket, etc.
And lots of them.
Literally **** tons.

This demonstrates your mind which doesn't understand simple math. We can hire someone for $1.5 million and it won't cost us a dollar more. Furthermore, Tubby will get some kind of job in the next year or two and that will reduce our obligation.

Yes, in my mid 40s I am far from a millennial. I also showed how they could pay Tubby buyout, pay Forbes 4x what he makes now and save the boosters 400k a year. Maybe I should make them some Pastner style flash cards

You guys talk about "sunk cost" like it's not real money. It is very real. Someone has to actually write a check and give to Tubby and probably assistants for severance. It is just money that you are obligated to pay; in other words: DEBT.

There are only 4 or 5 of them left. Too dumb or stubborn to understand. Mind boggling the nonsense that comes out of them making every excuse in the book for Tubby. A few posters pm'd me telling me that 3 of them are friends, which I guess explains it.

RE: Possible Steps on Getting Rid of Tubby - Your Input
Without wading too far into this, I think one stop gap is forcing him to fire the assistants who are not (at least visibly) pulling their weight.
I think changing out Saul and Pooh for two better recruiters would make Tubby uncomfortable enough to start thinking buyout. It also might actually get us enough players that Tubby (who by all accounts actually is a decent bench / practice coach) could actually win enough to serve his three years in disappointing, but passing, fashion while still giving us enough oxygen to keep the program relevant enough that the next guy has a chance.
I'm still stuck on why Penny won't agree to be 1st assistant (if indeed he won't, the man himself hasn't publicly spoke). Penny on the bench to replace Pooh or Saul is a no brainer:
1. Better recruiting - helps us and Tubby
2. If we start winning, tubby retires happy and our next coach is (hey!) Penny.
3. If we start losing, Tubby is fired, we need a guy with experience with the program (hey!), Penny.
I am probably missing something, but if Penny wants the HC job, the simplest way might be to replace Saul.
And yes, I am almost certainly missing something.
