It's the scheme that sucks, Tubby.
Yeah effort has NEVER been an issue with this team. If they had the effort of an average team, their record would be about 10-15 right now.
Part of it is just BB IQ. Most of the JUCO's just have never had to play "organized" basketball and lack nuanced defensive principles. It's hard to "coach up" folks who have to first learn then understand the concepts before implementing them.
That's why their zone is pourous. Zone is more than just standing in a place and holding arms up. But the same is true for their inability to stop dribble penetration. Poor footwork, no help, and no help helping the helper.

Tubby Smith to a fish.
Tubby: "Hey fish, get up here on land and bark like a dog."
Fish: "But I am a fish."
Tubby: "Do what I told you to do!!!!!"

I think that was the compromise.

From my experience of watching JUCOs, they are not defensive juggernauts
They all wanna score score score....dunk dunk dunk...take it to the hole....go coast to coast...woosh a bunch of outside shots.
Scoring is the best thing on the planet! Defense isn't as rewarding.
So they come into D1 with their habits.

IN one of Tubby's speeches after losing a game, he acted like he was surprised that the players were reverting back to their 'old habits' during games--smh as if he didn't know this would happen.
He's such a scam artist. He still has media on his side. And he has a mountain of excuses to fit any occasion, such as Minnesota can't expect good BB. After enduring 6 seasons of Tubby, Minnesota fans are saying exactly what we say now. We are just more perceptive...lol.
https://www.thedailygopher.com/2013/3/26...ht-reasons
"They'll tell you Tubby Smith is a nice guy and a world-class human being. You'll probably hear them suggest that Minnesota basketball must embrace its position as a run-of-the-mill B1G program, an also-ran that should accept middling basketball. For crying out loud, Tubby Smith once won a national championship. These are the things Wilbon, Bilas and others think a multi-million dollar decision should be based on. They're completely wrong.
....
We want to have hopes for a brighter future. And we want to watch competent basketball. Tubby Smith didn't deliver any of those things."

Jucos can help fill out an already decent team. Davenport would help any team we've had the last 20 years. Brewton would see time as backup on a lot of past teams. Geron came in and contributed on both ends of the court. Omar was awesome. Michael Wilson and Mingo Johnson added a lot to those Lorenzen teams. But, you can't build a whole team with mostly Jucos.

Am I the only who is in awe of his quotes?
"Smith, however, also pointed to a lack of physicality, a problem he didn’t foresee when putting together this roster. During the offseason, he figured the physical maturity of bringing in five junior-college transfers would be a strength for this team."
Well not for nothing there were a bunch of people on here who would point to their size and athleticism. Wasn’t buying it and wasn’t seeing it. That’s why highlight videos need to be taken w a grain of salt.

I thought that up until that last game, but I started to see signs of laziness on the interior, that I hadn't seen before.
Yep, you saw what I saw. Body language says a lot. That getting thrown under the bus had an effect, and if nothing changes, it's not going to get better. Hope it does, but not holding my breath. Hard to change when you get to be Tubby's age. And I would know.
