I was wondering if he was sick. I think it's his worst game since I cannot remember.

He was double and triple teamed every time he touched the ball.

Yep. Dude was blanketed by bodies all game long. The beauty is we have a team with other guys who can step up and make buckets. Balanced scoring. Pretty much pick your poison for the other guys.

RE: Cincinnati Bearcats vs. Connecticut Huskies Game Thread
From the Enquirer (there's a nice video embedded in the online article for Cane Broome post game comments):

Quote:Cincinnati Bearcats jump to big lead, hold off UConn for 14th straight victory
Tom Groeschen, tgroeschen@enquirer.com Published 2:27 p.m. ET Feb. 3, 2018 | Updated 7:12 p.m. ET Feb. 3, 2018

The game began noisily, with University of Connecticut basketball fans screaming and waving white towels at the visiting No. 8-ranked Cincinnati Bearcats here at Gampel Pavilion.

UC was so rattled that it jumped to a 13-0 lead. The home team was so poised that it missed its first 10 shots, as the UConn "Whiteout Week" rally towels went limp. The Bearcats eventually withstood a late UConn surge to win 65-57 on Saturday afternoon, for UC's 14th consecutive victory this season. Attendance was 9,170 in the 10,167-seat arena.

"We have a motto on the road: 'Let's win and get out of here,' " UC coach Mick Cronin said. "We don't worry about how we do it."

UC (21-2, 10-0 American Athletic Conference) was led by junior guard Jacob Evans III with 19 points. Senior forward Kyle Washington had 13 points and 11 rebounds. Junior guard Cane Broome, who is from nearby East Hartford, Conn., scored 10 points.

"The fast start was really important," Washington said. "They have some good young players, some great guards. This is a storied program, as everybody knows. They've been struggling a little bit, but we didn't take this game for granted by any stretch."

UConn (11-12, 4-6 AAC) was led by guards Jalen Adams and Christian Vital with 20 and 18 points, respectively.

Four NCAA men's basketball title banners hang in UConn's Gampel Pavilion, the most recent coming in 2014. But, since the beginning of the 2016-17 season, UConn is 27-29 under coach Kevin Ollie ... who, by the way, coached that 2014 championship team.

"You can’t spot a team 13-0, we’ve got this great crowd in here, you have to give them something to feed off," Ollie said. "You can’t get 13-0 down and miss your first 10 shots."

UC led by as many as 19 points, then held on as UConn drew within six points (63-57) in the closing moments. Evans made two foul shots with 5.5 seconds left to make the final score 65-57.

Neither team shot well, typical of a UC-UConn slugfest. UC hit 38 percent from the field and UConn made 36.4 percent. UC held a 38-33 rebounding edge.

"It wasn't a pretty game by any stretch," Cronin said.

Defensively, the Bearcats were as tenacious and active as they have been all season. Lacking much of an inside game, UConn tried to run some sets that played to its talented guards. UC actually was outscored 26-14 in the paint, but some of that came off of drives by the UConn guards.

UConn lost for the first time in six home games this season at their on-campus Gampel Pavilion. UConn also plays some games at the XL Center in downtown Hartford.

EASY EXPLANATION: Cronin usually has a rather small group of postgame interviewers on the road, but UConn is heavily covered. Saturday, there were several more reporters than usual for a UC road game.

"You know, I think conference play is just hard," Cronin told the assembled group. "(UConn) plays a lot of freshmen on the front line. They play with a lot of pride, they're just so young on the front line. We have guys like that, but they're on the bench waiting their turn. I think they competed extremely hard the whole game. Our defense bothered them early."

With every angle and every kind of question posed afterward, Cronin never lost patience. At one point, Cronin said:

"You've got to understand, we've got a pretty good basketball team. We haven't lost in a couple months."

FAST START: Early on, UC subdued a UConn crowd that apparently was gearing for one of those court-storming upsets.

The Bearcats built leads of 13-0, 15-2 and 17-4 before UConn found somewhat of a shooting touch. The Huskies cut the UC lead to seven points, and it was 23-16 as the clock ticked under two minutes in the first half.

Then, Evans hit a 3-pointer for UC's first field goal in nearly nine minutes. That made it 26-16. After UConn's Vital scored to make it 26-18, Evans came down and swished another trey to make it 29-18.

Vital answered with a bomb of his own, cutting the UC lead to 29-21. UC freshman guard Keith Williams then made a 3-pointer just before the halftime buzzer, sending UC to the dressing room with a 32-21 lead.

Evans led UC with 10 points in the first half. Washington had seven points and eight rebounds in the half, helping offset a slow start by senior forward Gary Clark. Clark had only two points in the first half, as the UConn defense bottled Clark up at every turn.

Clark finished with five points and six rebounds.

RARITY: The quick start was rather unusual for UC, which has made a habit of falling behind early. The most extreme case was UC's 80-70 home win over Houston last Wednesday, when the Bearcats rallied from an 18-point first-half deficit.

IT NEVER RESTS: UC entered the day ranked No. 2 nationally in the Kenpom.com metric for adjusted defensive efficiency, at .853 points per possession. UC also began the day ranked No. 2 nationally in scoring defense at 56.8 points per game.

PULLING AWAY, SOMEWHAT: UC guard Jarron Cumberland made a 3-pointer to put UC ahead 35-23 early in the second half. The Bearcats then led by at least 10 points until the game's final minute.

UC stretched its lead to as many as 19 points, 55-36, on a pair of free throws by Evans with 7:58 left.

"I think our fouls got a little out of hand, that's really not our M.O. around here," Washington said, referring to UConn's comeback. "We fouled a little too much, and we let Jalen Adams get a loose a little bit."

LOCAL MAN: UC's Broome, who as noted is from East Hartford, did a postgame group interview outside the Bearcats' locker room. Broome also played against UConn (at Gampel Pavilion) when he was with Sacred Heart University, before transferring to UC.

"It's cool for me to come back and play in front of my family," Broome said, smiling. "I just tried to play it like every other game. You don't want to get too hyped up."

Broome said he had access to about 20 family/friends tickets.

"Then, whoever else bought their tickets," Broome said. "I had a lot of friends coming up."

FOR STARTERS: Clark on Saturday set the UC career record for games started, with 124. Clark had shared the record of 123 with Deonta Vaughn (UC 2007-10).

COLD ONE: It was 21 degrees outside Gampel Pavilion when the game began Saturday afternoon, and it also was fairly chilly in the arena. More than a few fans kept their coats on during the game.

BIG LEAD: UC (10-0 AAC) now leads the league by three games over Houston and Wichita State (7-3 each). Each team has eight league games remaining.

UP NEXT: UC will return home to play Central Florida on Tuesday at 7 p.m. (CBS Sports Network). The Bearcats beat the Knights 49-38 on Jan. 16 in Orlando.

Not to mention, Gary is a great passer out of the post. There were quite a few open threes yesterday, and now we've got guys who can knock them down. Broome is deadly from straight away on those kickouts, and Evans and Cumberland can hit consistently when they're open too.

RE: Cincinnati Bearcats vs. Connecticut Huskies Game Thread
From the Hartford Courant (embedded video from Ollie post game):

Quote:No. 8 Cincinnati Holds Off UConn Men, 65-57

This wasn’t the complete capitulation seen from UConn on several other occasions.

Though the Huskies were never a threat to pull an upset Saturday, they fought through a tough afternoon of playing catch-up, toughened up under the boards and staved off the humiliation that seemed inevitable after the first 7½ minutes, with their fans still standing and waiting for their first points.

In the end, these things and $12 would be good for a spot in the parking garage across the street and Geno Auriemma’s sympathy. For the UConn men it amounted to a 65-57 loss to eighth-ranked Cincinnati before 9,170, the largest crowd of the season at Gampel Pavilion.

“I’m always positive, because I know what this team is capable of,” said Jalen Adams, who led the Huskies with 20 points, “If we put a full 40 minutes together, I like our chances against anybody. It’s just a little frustrating when we don’t put those full 40 minutes together, and we show spurts of a good team and other spurts of not doing what we’re capable of.”

UConn (11-12, 4-6 in the American Athletic Conference) has lost three games in the last seven days, and all had a familiar ring. On Saturday, with its home crowd ready to cut loose, the Huskies came out missing everything in sight, their first 10 shots. By the time Christian Vital scored on a layup to put them on the scoreboard, the Huskies were in a 13-0 hole, and 7:46 of the game was gone.

“You just can’t give Cincinnati that type of lead,” coach Kevin Ollie said. “… You can’t spot a team a 13-0 run. We’ve got his great crowd in here, you’ve got to give them something to feed off of. You can’t miss your first 10 shots. Some of those shots were layups, or 3s that were wide open, you’ve got to make your shots to settle your defense down, get the crowd going.”

After their 0-for-10 start, the Huskies made 8 of their next 15 and were within seven, 21-14, on Adams’ bucket with 4:28 to go in the half. Cincinnati, after going more than six minutes without a field goal, made three 3-pointers, two by Jacob Evans III, who finished with 19, and one by Keith Williams at the buzzer to send the Bearcats to halftime with a 32-21 lead.

“Every time we tried to get over the hump, they made a play,” Ollie said, “that’s what top teams in the country do.”

The Huskies were hanging in there in the second half when East Hartford’s Cane Broome, who transferred from Sacred Heart to Cincinnati, came off the bench to hit a pair of 3-pointers, helping to stretch the Bearcats’ lead to 17 with 12:04 to play. UConn was down 19 with 7:58 left, but made a late run and got within single digits in the final minute, within six on Adams’ 3-pointer with six seconds left, forcing Cincinnati (20-2, 10-0 in the conference) to at least make free throws to clinch the game.

It was UConn’s first loss of the season at Gampel.

“They play with a lot of pride,” Cincinnati coach Mick Cronin said, “They play a lot of freshmen on the front line; we have guys like that, but they are on the bench waiting their turn. I thought they competed extremely hard. … Obviously, they couldn’t get anything, you know our defense bothered them early. It wasn’t a pretty game by any stretch.”

Broome had 10 points and three assists in 24 minutes, and Kyle Washington had 13 points and 11 rebounds. The Bearcats controlled, but did not dominate up front against the Huskies’ young big men, accumulating a 38-33 edge in rebounds, getting 10, below their 13.6 average, on the offensive boards.

“Usually, when you box out and rebound, it’s the first effort,” said Mamadou Diarra, a redshirt freshman. “But they go first, second and third effort, so we just kept fighting with them and didn’t let them get their usual numbers. We kept working the whole time.”

Diarra, getting a start with Isaiah Whaley limited by a strained hip, had eight points and six rebounds in 23 minutes. Vital, 8-for-16, scored 18 points to go with nine rebounds. But Terry Larrier (1-for-8) still looked lost playing with the mask, airballing a few of his shots, and the Huskies finished 36.1 percent from the floor. Cincinnati shot 38 percent, but went 9-for-25 on 3-pointers, with UConn 5-for-17.

For a team that has lost six games by 20 or more points, the effort was respectable, but all the good UConn did must be seen through the prism of the 0-for-10, 13-0 deficit to start the game, which made much of what came afterward academic.

UConn got only one field goal in the first 10 1/3 minutes at UCF on Wednesday night, falling behind 11-3 and losing by nine, and were down 7-0 and 11-4 in the opening minutes at Temple last Sunday, eventually losing by 27.

“Maybe we just need to come out and be more aggressive, try to put pressure on the defense,” Vital said. “Sometimes, we try to see what the defense is going to give us and obviously that’s good sometimes. But if we put the pressure on the defense, make them react to us, that may get us off to a quicker start. Maybe just a different approach.”

Slow Start Forces Crowd To Stand

If you look at the shot of the student section at the beginning of the video, some bloke was wearing a Houston Astros jersey. A truly pathetic student section to match an equally-riveting product on the court.
